A new shift of black cats are here and are taking over. Black and orange streamers and balloons are everywhere, and the tables are adorned with fall foliage bouquets and little pumpkins.
Caudrens, hot and cold, are loaded with your favorite brew. A few mama kitties are here with their litters of black kittens, who are running around sideways, arched and poofed - the dry ice is making it even freakier for babies' first Halloween.
The buffet tables are loaded with all of your favorite noms and griddles are hot and ready for your custom order. Don't worry, those creepy crawly things are just gummy worms/bugs/spiders/bats, etc. Oh and they have strung that spider web stuff all over so watch out!
It has started to snow here. The wind is picking up and it's weird to see snow and leaves blowing around. They're calling for up to 10" in higher elevations, and, well, I'm at a higher elevation.
My 2 black cats are snoring in the living room. I want to vacuum before the threat of power outage looms closer, but I don't want to disturb the little darlings.
Happy Halloween!

Morning all! Fun cafe this morning!
I got five hrs of sleep due to dog walking and pumpkin carving. Streets here and there are flooded from the storm last night and there were lots of puddles inside the gym. Phone and Internet are down and it's general mayhem here. We have a big fundraiser this afternoon and right now ESPN is here to do a piece on Willow's dad. Phew!
-
Wow GD, I don't know how you do it sometimes! I just read about pumpkin carving and all that rain, yikes! Kit, concatulations on your win(s) last night and have fun tonight! Bet the girls will be the life of the party!
There's a meteorologist from The Weather Channel in my town, about 8 miles north from my house; he's in front of Town Hall. He noted that there's traffic (which Kilroy would say "meh, that's not traffic"!) and he's been told "they're all headed to Shop Rite". Yep, everyone is getting their milk & bread!Posted 7 months ago by JoanfromNewJersey #

Popping in to say 'Hi' in between cleaning and making my Lemon pie.......... didn't find any Meyer lemons (I think they're out of season).... so I used a regular one, and added a small piece of tangerine (to cut the tartness)...... sure smells yummy, I hope Mr. AV likes it!......
-
Hi all, it's snowing hard here (yuck!) but we made it out long enough to order a new fridge & they're even delivering it on a Sunday.
Georgie came out & ate and drank a tiny bit but then went back to his hidey hole in Mr. K's closet :(
Stay safe in the yucky weather, wherever you are.

Kit, sounds like yummy fare at your Halloween party!...... I love a good beef stew, and cornbread is the perfect side!.......
...... I've been baking a lemon pie today, smells and looks yummy...... tomorrow, I'm making my turkey tetrizinni receipe that I posted last year at Thanksgiving, but using chicken instead....... want to make sure it's up to par for next month ;) ................ I'll freeze the left over stock that cooking the chicken will make, and will use it for a chicken soup on Monday.......... I've made a study lately of making numerous meals from piggy backing on each other........... I never waste leftovers! (oh dear, have I turned into my grandmother?) LOL
-
AV.... Do I dare ask....... What is "piggy backing on each other"?? Sounds like something you would see on a farm.....but surely it has to do with cooking, right??? You should re-post the turkey tetrazzini, for those who may have missed it. :)

12P, I just mean that I will make two or three meals, starting with a few ingredients and then using the leftovers......... example:
tomorrow, I'll cook my chicken, debone it and use it in my tetrizini
save the stock and make chicken soup or stew the next day......... one meal 'piggy backs' on the other............. sometimes I save little portions of stuff like rice, left over peas, carrots, etc. and then use that in my soup too!......... portions that typically wouldn't make a meal, but when added together with a whole bunch of other stuff, make a great stew or soup.............. here it the tetrizinni receipe: and yes, I'm adding the almonds this time! I like the crunch.........will probably toast them a little first.....
AV’s Turkey Tetrizinni
3-4 cups diced turkey or chicken
2 cups fontina
1/2 cup parmesean
1 lb. fresh mushrooms
½ cup celery
½ cup onion
½ cup sherry
1 stick butter
2 ½ cups milk
1 tsp. fresh nutmeg
4 tlb. flour
1 box cooked spaghetti
½ cup bread crumbs
2 tlb. fresh chopped parsleyCook spaghetti and drain….. mix with a little butter to keep it from sticking. Cook celery, onion and mushrooms in a little butter (salt and pepper to taste) and sherry until soft. In a sauce pan, melt about ½ stick butter. Add flour and cook to make a paste. Whisk in milk slowly, stirring constantly so that it’s smooth and no lumps. Add fontina cheese , ½ of the parmesean and nutmeg and cook until it makes a thick, smooth sauce. In a large mixing bowl, put cooked, drained spaghetti, turkey meat (diced) mushroom & veggie mixture. Pour in sauce and mix well. Pour mixture into greased baking dish. Mix bread crumbs with remaining half of parmesean cheese and parsley. Sprinkle on top. Bake at 350 for about an hour, until hot and bubbly. An optional twist is to add finely chopped almonds in the mix (gives it a nice crunch)

Well, I guess I am a piggy backer too!! I usually call it dibs and dabs, but like your reference better!! Going to copy the recipe, just in case I lost the original....which sometimes happens. You should plant a Meyer Lemon tree in the yard. It would do well in your area.

oh, I only WISH I had a yard big enough for a lemon tree!....... before we sold our 'big' house in 2008, we had a huge yard, and had both a lemon and avacado tree in it..... (not meyer tho)............. now I live almost next to downtown, in a very urban (but historic) area, but the lots are small - the house takes up almost the entire lot..........our landscaping is what most people refer to as 'zero scape'..........jasmine ground cover, and paved parking in the rear...................I'll let you know how the lemon/tangerine mix does - my friend that gave me the receipe said that's what she used since she couldn't find the sweeter meyer lemons, and she loved it.........she's a good cook too - we swap receipies and ideas all the time!

Kit, your party is going to be great! Full report tomorrow please :)
My house smells awesome - have a chicken stew going. If the power goes out I can put the insert on the woodburner, which has the house nice and cozy. It is snowing like crazy outside - at least 6 inches. I would like to bake cookies, but I'm afraid the power might go out. At least I got a load of laundry done.Posted 7 months ago by JoanfromNewJersey #

You guys must have bigger lemon trees in the US than we do?? We have 2 in our yard, over 20 years old, and they are not big at all? Could probably fit in a pot if I tried to dig them up.
So, I have an idea, thought I'd ask some of the more experienced TDK cooks if it will work? If I took my regular, very delicious & yummy lemon meringue pie recipe, and used strawberry juice instead of lemon juice, would I end up with a strawberry meringue pie?? (thats worth eating?? It sounds really yummy in my head??)
-
Sky, our lemon trees rival orange trees here, and bear lots of fruit.......
..... I'm not much of a baker, so I'm not sure about the strawberry meranguine ...... I've heard of strawberry pie, but never with meranguine on top....... but hey, who knows, you may be on to something! -
Wow, we don't have lemon or orange trees 'round here, but I grew up with apple, pear & peach trees, as well as mulberry bushes. We had grape arbors, strawberry patches and rhubarb, yum!
Ok, the news says we have 10" in our town, and the power keeps blinking, eep!Posted 7 months ago by JoanfromNewJersey #

Hello all!!! It is still snowing away out there. We have a lot already. It is pretty, but I so hate driving in it. :( Dangerous..... SO far, we still have power. I saw some broken branches on my way home though.
AV your pie sounds delicious!! I've seen those Meyer lemons before ibn the grocerie store. People here go nuts for them!Joan, I would love to be at your house with the cozy wood stove and chicken stew. FOrtunate kitties you have to have all that warmth. :)
-
Has anyone eaten much Bok Choy? Someone told me today that they put it in a soup with chicken broth, mushrooms, scallions, etc. Sounds SO yummers!!! I will have to try some. I know it is very healthy to eat. I also read celery and radishes are full of nutrients. Ha, who knew? You wouldn't think so.
-
Hi BB! That would be great if you were closer, we would have a blast! I hope your power stays on. Sister's friend without power, no heat, but she has 3 big dogs - cuddle up!

The chicken stew was delish! Watching the guy from The Weather Channel uptown. Maybe if I email TWC, I can invite him for stew and a hot stove!
According to NYC news, my town is up to 12.5"!Posted 6 months ago by JoanfromNewJersey #

Joan, wow lot of snow and that is in one day right? Was watching the weather channel at work, what a wide path they were predicting for snow.
Hey there Kilroy, BB, & AV.

Hi all, wow all the talk about fruit trees has me drooling. Yes I do have a plum, nectarine, orange, cherry guava and a sickly lime tree on the property. We also have two types of grapes growing. Alas no lemon tree since the last one curled up it's toes and died. We will plant a new lemon and possibly a Tahitian lime next year.
AV, did you know that you can espalier lemon trees where space is at a premium. Daughter is on a small property and has started to espalier her lemon tree. Plenty of images on Google. A year or two ago AZDEB posted about a varigated Eureka lemon, beautiful looking fruit and I'm seriously thinking of getting one.
Joan, keep warm, you're welcome to head over here, it's a sunny hot day here and still Spring.Posted 6 months ago by Moonshadow_NZ #
