  3. Only if we want to move to Atlanta. Um, no thanks.

  4. KIlroy I am soooo sorry. When is this happening or is it today? Why do companies always do this near the holidays? Not that there is ever a good time to do it :(

How many of you are affected?

  5. That is crap! Any chance of a similar position in some other network? You've got serious skills to offer.

  7. We have until February 6th. 9 people total.

News organizations have been eliminating research departments left & right; I guess they think Google is the answer to everything (hint, it's not). All our jobs are being "centralized" down to headquarters in Atlanta.

I imagine the person who dreamed this up will get a bonus for saving the company money.

  13. And just think, I just blew my emergency fund on a vet bill...

I am better off than about half my department, we have people who are single but I have Mr. K (and his post office pension & healthcare) to fall back on if I have to. Just never expected to have to.

What am I going to do about my mom? I send her money every month, but what now? Sorry, starting to panic a little.

  14. :( OH, NO! I am, SO very sorry Kilroy!! That just stinks BIG TIME! All those poor employees.... :( HUGS to all.

  15. Oh crap is right! That sucks! I am so sorry Kilroy! Not sure what the situation is with your mom, but are there any services available to her that might save her enough to make up for what you send?

  16. She's in low income housing & on every kind of aid she qualifies for, as far as I know; it takes my $300 a month to make the ends meet, plus I pay her car insurance.

  17. You are such a good, caring daughter...... bless you!

  18. Kudos for you Kilroy in taking care of your mom! You will be able to work thru this! It's hard to stay positive but try! The sooner you get your resume updated put your feelers out, network, explore new venues & you will attract the situation you need to be in! (When I was laid off a few years back it seemed daunting too but the sooner I got involved with my "new me" project the better I felt!) After landing a job I enjoyed but didn't care for the commute I started looking for one a bit closer. It became a game as the process continued with an even more promising result! You will accomplish this new challange!

  24. {{{{{Kilroy}}}}} My prayers that find a new job sooner than expected. You will weather this somehow. I can understand how worried you are about your Mom, I was there once myself. When you get over the shock, start formulating a job search list and update your resume'. You live in New York so you know the importance of updating personal and professional references before leaving your job. So sorry about the terrible timing.

  25. Is moving to Atlanta a definite no? I live in the ATL and it has it's good points. Mild winters, places to hike...you could be my hiking partner! Maybe check it out?

  27. Also the cost of living is far, far cheaper than NYC. You may be able to send more money to your mom. Just a thought. Sending prayers your way.

  30. I'm also sorry, Kilroy, and I hope you find an employment arrangement that works very well for you.

I got to Georgia by way of a job shutdown myself, although it was my father who experienced it in the 1960s. He was a civilian employee of the Air Force, and he was transferred to a base in Georgia when one in Pennsylvania was closed. Coming here was the last thing any of us wanted to do, but after 45 years, I think it's worked out pretty well. (As long as I don't see any of those Confederate battle flags some organization is threatening to put up along the Interstae highways to commemorate the Civil War.)
