Sorry you are feeling bad, Brandilee. Hope it passes quickly.
And I don't know why people come in so sick to the office. I had some people who worked for me who would show up in my office coughing and hacking and sneezing, almost as if they were trying to show me how dedicated they were. I would ask them to please GO HOME! The world won't fall apart without them for one day.

In retail you get a double-whammy...people who come to work sick, and people who come to go shopping sick! Had one yesterday who told me she was too ill to put her makeup on, and was going home to get back in bed after making her purchase. No, she wasn't buying chicken soup--she was in Macys!
-
Oh brandilee - sorry you are so sick! *sending virtual chicken soup which will sooth your tummy* I agree with you 100%. People just don't seem to get it that by going out in spite of being contagious they aren't doing anyone a favour! Haven't these people heard of teleconferencing and web conferencing? (Funny - I actually had a dream last night about going into work for a meeting or something, and seeing all these really sick people, and then being worried that I'd get the stomach flu as well!)

I do have some sympathy for people who are paid by the day or hour and so don't have sick leave to take, but for anybody else, GO HOME!
You're not productive when you're sick, you're making yourself sicker, and you're making other people sick!
If you absolutely MUST come in when you're sick (people are coming in out of town for a meeting, really severe deadlines that you can't meet working from home, etc.), wear gloves and a face mask and change them often. You look ridiculous but you're helping your colleagues out. Find a room where you can work in isolation as much as you can, wash your hands early and often, and use a disinfectant wipe for common surfaces you touch.
I had to work through a bug once--literally I was the only person on a crucial project that suddenly had to get done ahead of schedule, per a request from the board--and that made my silly little cold that I could have gotten rid of in a day or two turn into pneumonia.

I hear ya AnnF ... don't forget the bosses that make you feel like crap when
you ARE sick and you DO stay home and they say, oh a little cold and you couldn't be here! That's my rant!!Posted 4 years ago by SammyandOliversmama #

Where I used to work the staff was so lean, you were expected to come in even if you were at death's door. Part of why I don't work there anymore.

Oh, I completely understand this... I got the worse strep throat of my life from a co-worker who came to work sick with it. Hope you feel better.

*Columbo voice* --Oh, just one more thing...
Keep a current number at your kids' school where you can be reached at all times. When your child's school calls and says your child is sick and needs to go home, PICK YOUR CHILD UP NOW!!!!! You'd be amazed how many parents either can't be reached, or won't come get a sick kid! There are no schools with the ability to hold a sick child longer than it takes to come get him, and we have enough responsibilities of our own without being dumped on by yours.

I had a boss once who would pay us for sick time - but not until the end of the year! It was his way of making sure we didn't just pull a sickie because we wanted a day off. But it sure didn't help when you were really sick! And this was in a dental office, so if you came in sick, you could potentially pass it on to all the patients. Plus, I was sick more during the time I worked there than I have been while working any other job - probably because I'd catch stuff the patients brought in. Funny though - the worst symptoms of whatever I had always seemed to come on over the weekend and be gone by Monday, so I never had to take a sick day and wait til the end of the year for my money!

Just catching up...Brandilee so sorry your sick again..{{{HUGS}}}} Take two kitties and go to bed...
Ginny...That is so true about parents not picking up sick kids..I always went right away (when kids where young)..and still holler at them if they are sick and go to work... -
I agree with most of what was said above, there are exceptions though, I have had a cough for almost 10 months now....its nothing that is catchy, contagious or anything but it can be annoying...I tried to stay away from people as much as I could especially in the beginning months because it was much worse than it is now, but couldn't avoid going to stores to shop for groceries and whatnot. And we do sanitize our workstations when we relieve people, because we change over hot-seat style (the workstations are never empty, one shift relieves another 24/7) and one never knows what the persons personal habits are (i.e., do they wash their hands or not, etc).

AZDebra-- Your cough could be from a medication you are taking. My personal experience was with a blood pressure med that listed as a side effect "non-productive cough." After about 3 months, this "non-productive cough" had me sounding like I had TB (and no, I do not smoke). Needless to say, I changed meds.

My roomie caught this same illness at his grandmother's funeral, passed it on to me, I passed it on to several people at our job....by now everybody's got it...here's the punchline....the one person who called out sick is gonna be fired!
So here we all are coughing and wheezing and trying to take orders....
I am now known as the man who took out the entire call center,,...never live it down...

lol, People come into my job sick all the time. But I guess it should be expected since I work at a Hospital. :-) Oh well I just do my best not to catch what the patients have.

Sorry you are sick again Brandilee. Just when you are feeling better, it starts all over again.
I have found that if you have sick days, use them when you are sick but you better be ready to get a doctor's note as to why you are out. I worked at a large software company where they gave us 8 sick days a year but if used more than 3 days it was considered excessive. We worked in an old building that just recycled the air so when someone got sick, we all got sick. It would get so bad we nicknamed the building the "sicko building". Now it seems most companies give you sick time but God forbid if you use it. Hence the reason people come into the office sick. Back in 1991, I was the only wire operator/operations assistant in a small branch and if I called in sick, my back up would barely do my job. I would always come into a mess that I had to clean up and would inevitably considered in my performance review. It was hard to even take my vacations knowing I would be coming back to a mess. Now after working temp jobs, I understand that working as a temp, one has to come in as one will not be paid if out sick.

This working when sick is such an American attitude. If any of you have seen "Sicko" it's amazing the amount of time off many other countries give their workers-both sick and vacation. When I was working as a counselor, we were expected to come in even if ill because our patients would be inconvenienced. Never mind that they might also get sick from us!

We are living in a twisted view of using sick leave in the U.S., that's for sure.
Networker, you are right, a lot of coughs are caused by meds, mine have been changed now three different times and the cough has gotten just a bit better (i.e., not 24/7 just every hour or so now)...that is good advice though with chronic coughs, check your meds for relating side-effects.
