Look at what my friend found in her yard!

She heard meowing from high up a tree. She called the fire dept. but it turns out they don't really do the kitten rescue thing. He ended up slipping down several branches, low enough for her to get him. She took him to the vet and he is 7 weeks old, free of fleas, ticks, etc.. and got his first shots. He will have a happy home with her. She has had cats before, but not for many years, I think.

We went to visit little Zacchaeus yesterday and had a blast. We took a bag full of duplicate cat toys we had and he dove right in....so playful and adorable. I don't remember when I've been around a kitten that small (ours were adopted as older kittens.)

I told my friend that I'm so happy for her but a little jealous. All we find in our yard is old fast food wrappers and dead birds. We have decided 3 cats is a good limit for us right now but if something that adorable ever shows up in our yard, all bets are off.

    Here's some more playtime photos...

  4. oh and i love his name!

Posted 5 months ago by Jetta and Boo Boo's Mom #

  5. Thanks, JBBM. I actually suggested the name and she loved it. :) I forgot to brag on the little man. He is using the litter box like a pro. The only time he stopped playing was to trot down the hall (to the back bathroom....quite a distance) and use his box. What a good boy!

Another interesting thing, if he was born feral he might be related to our Emily. Our friend shares an alley with our vet (and her vet) and Emily was born to a feral colony from that alley.

  9. He is very cute, and I am happy for you friend. I just have to wonder- it's weird for ferals not to have fleas etc - is there a chance he might be someone's lost kitten?

  10. What a cutie and he is dressed for the holiday season :)

  11. I wondered the same thing, Skyron. And my friend did raise the question with the vet when she found out there were no fleas. The vet encouraged her to keep the cat (since it never should have been outdoors.) She is a good person so I'll leave it to her good conscience to decide whether she should ask the neighbors about it. She is wondering whether someone's pet could have had kittens and they just let them go. We've had some freezes and snow, so I wonder if it would be a good time of year for a feral to escape fleas?

  12. Probably so. This little man-kitty is very lucky to be so healthy and so loved!

  13. Yup, agree...cold does kill the fleas, not the eggs so if it is warm in the house you may have a little bunch of gifts as fleas in a bit unless he is treated!

  14. Oh I want one!! I know, I know I will have a human revolt on my hands if I do but who could resist that little darling!

  21. Well, yes......

  22. Hey, it must be easy to find kittens in trees in West Texas. There are so few trees that it makes them easy to spot, I guess.

I take back what I said about only finding trash in our yard. Months ago my sons collected quite a few pecans in our yard (from a neighbor's tree, I guess...but with the wind around here, who knows?) Today we cracked and shelled them and have about 1/2 cup of nuts for our holiday baking. Still, a kitten would be even better, though.:)

Edited to add the new West Texas slogan I thought of. "Come to West Texas, where kittens grow on trees."

  23. I too am envious and jealous! All I find is trash and leaves, and an occasional dead rodent courtesy of the neighbor's cats. Are you saying that I need to move to Texas?

I think that anyone who would let a 7-week old kitten out to wander around clearly doesn't really care what happens to it and if their kitten disappears into a good home, yay for the kitten and phooey on them. I'm glad your friend was able to get the poor little thing out of the tree.

  24. That's a great slogan, ECB! Yes, my Willow was in a tree in our back yard and she had a broken leg. I would so love to know how she got there but I guess it will always be a mystery. Had she been in any other back yard she probably wouldn't be here now. I think we are about the only kitty people on our street.

  27. Black and white strikes again!!! Now that I have one of my own....there is no going back!

  28. Have you ever seen a totally adorable kitten and thought to yourself "I WISH to be attacked by that kitten"?!?!?! Zaccheus is a totally adorable kitten!!!!!

Posted 5 months ago by krazikat #

  29. That is an absolutely CUTE kitten. So far as being someone's lost kitten, it probably is. But, if they let it go outside and wander off in winter maybe they don't want it or deserve it. And if he slipped outside without someone noticing, they would be putting up 'lost kitten' posters. As long as your friend keeps her eyes open and doesn't see any posters or Lost and Found ads, she's probably safe keeping the little cutie.
