Hi
I live in a small apartment. I just got Willow...female cat. She seems to be adjusting well and I really hate to return her but.....Well I was given a bucket of really good litter by an agency who gave her to me...The problem isnt with the litter....Willow poops alot during the day . I scoop it out many times during the day and put it in a paper bag and then put the bag into an empty oatmeal container box and keep adding until I take it to the basement and put in the garbage where the apartment complex disposes of it......but all through the apt all I can smell is poop from that container.... I need advice on what others have done ...thank you

I do the same but instead of paper I use plastic bags and tie them off. I think it works better for sealing in that poopy smell. Most pet stores sell little plastic bags for use with dog poopy when walking in public places. Those are the ones I use and they are fairly inexpensive. I can't imagine the oatmeal container working that great though. I get litter in a plastic tub and I always keep an empty one. Once one empties with fresh litter, the other one fills with used poopy litter and I continue my cycle. I'm sure there are air fresheners that could help with the smell but I have never needed to. Hope you find something that works for you.

ok so Dave just so I understand what you are saying....you put the used scooped poop pieces in a plastic bag and then tie it off and put it in the plastic tub and then take all the plastic bags out once a week and dispose of them?...sorry I am so new at this just need help. Thanks
-
Ha, yes. Sorry, I could have been more descriptive. At the end of the week, I use a plastic grocery bag and toss all of it away. And when I know my current tub of fresh litter is about to run out, I just let the dirty tub fill and toss that whole thing and start using the new empty tub. That way, I don't keep the same tub. We all start out as newbies, it's good that you are getting in the habit of cleaning it daily.

my cat is somewhere between 2 and 3 years old. I have to put the box in my bathroom. No matter what I do I can't seem to get rid of the smell. I am very anul about odors. The litter is 4 times the strength and is very good litter. I even bought a citrus spray to spray in the litter after I take the clumps out...I do have a fan in the bathroom but hate to leave it running all day...not to mention the cost on my electric bill. Oh well, maybe just won't work out for Willow here....

You should look for litter you can flush away in the toilet, they make several different kinds. Then you can scoop and get rid of it immediately so no smell lingers. I would not spray citrus smell right on the litter box, cats don't usually like citrus at all and it might make her stay away from the box, you really don't want that to happen.

Is it me or have we seen too many people lately posting comments about getting rid of their kitties for stupid reasons? Allright Casey, I'm sure there is a logical solution for this. For example, would it be possible to scoop the poop daily and... Throw it out in the trash daily? Not in a poop storage container? I'm sorry to sound blunt, but you knew when you got Willow she would poop. And I am certain you're well aware poop has a distinct smell that isn't pleasant. IMO there is only one logical solution here. If you had a baby, would you just store the used diapers and then think about giving it away when the smell became unbearable?

I'm lucky enough to have a garage where I keep a snap shut trash can for the litter box offerings (until they can be taken to the dumpster.) But if I lived in an apartment I'd probably invest in a diaper genie or something like that that seals off each offering and prevents odors. I think they make them for cat litter box waste too....but it's probably about the same thing as a diaper genie. Basically, you cannot have that waste in your house without a specialized sealing type waste container. It will stink.
-
I flush the poop. The rest I scoop and take the bag out to the dumpster. If you are feeding poor quality food she will poop more and it will stink more. Good food (Science Diet, Eukanuba) will give less poop and less smell.

I just reread this and noticed you are spraying citrus into the litter box. Citrus is often used as a cat repellant. You don't want to repel her from the litter box or she will go elsewhere to do her business. I'd stop using that asap. Cats really prefer their litterboxes to not have artificial perfumes, and citrus is especially undesirable. You are right that the quality of the litter is probably not related to the problem you are having with the waste container. Good luck.

Check the online selling sites (Craig's list, eBay, etc). See if you can find an inexpensive Diaper Genie or the equivalent item designed for cats like this one: (http://www.litterlocker.us/)
Another option is a self cleaning box. There are two kinds, one that rakes the used litter and stores the poop in a sealed bag and one that actually cleans and disposes of the waste. The second kind uses a special kind of 'sand' that can be washed and reused. You don't wash it, the cat box does that. It has to be hooked up to a water supply and the waste line empties into the toilet. It's expensive but some people find it worth while. If you have too many cats, a self-cleaning box can be overworked.
You could find something less porous to store the poop in (sealing plastic bags instead of paper or cardboard. You could also get a large, tightly sealing container to put the smaller bags into.
The last thing you may want to look into is to find a cat food that doesn't result in such stinky waste. Just be careful to change her food slowly and not just suddenly give her a new kind of food.
Avoid scented litter, its smell is usually too strong for cats and she'll start looking for a less odorized place. And, like EC says, no citrus scented sprays. Cats don't like citrus and you'll end up poop places you would rather not have it.

Thank you all for your input....I also was wondering if the smell could be attributed to the fact that I use hefty garbage bags with ties as a liner in the box....should I just go with a plain litter box instead of lining it this way....someone in the store told me that she does this ...she puts the litter box inside of a large sturdy plastic garbage bag ...then she pours the litter over it.....this way she says you can dispose of the litter once or twice a month while cleaning the box daily.....so I was wondering if the lingering smell could be because the plastic garbage bag is in the box carrying the smell continually??

I don't know if the plastic bag in the box would hold the smell. You could try it without the bag and see if that makes a difference. I'm more inclined to think that it's coming from poop being stored in paper bags inside a cardboard box. The odor molecules just aren't contained by paper products.

You might try spraying a product called ( out ) (found at wal-mart pet department )directly on the poop after you remove it and place it in the trash bag, it helps eliminate the smell.

I'm in a small apt. and have two cats. Here's what I do.
1. scoop 2-3 times a day. I scoop the litter into a small plastic bag (recycled from stores or dog waste bags) and walk it to the corner and toss it in the public bin, like people do with dogs. Occasionally I am too lazy to walk outside to the corner so I will put the plastic bag of waste into my normal covered trash bins till I go outside and can take it to the corner. FYI the dog waste bags are often baby powder scented.
2. I put a little baking soda in with my litter when I change out the box.
3. I use Hartz no odor litter spray in the box daily or every other day or so. There are other brands that do the same thing.
4. Air freshener spray when needed.
5. Good quality food.

Probiotics can help with smelly stools, I have to use it on Mitch if he finds something (non meat) to eat around the house. He snuck a small piece of popcorn tonight, so he got some probiotic powder sprinkled on his food tonight. He is very sensitive to any food that isn't meat - he along with the rest of mine eat a "prey model raw diet" which eliminates stool smell. Well, as long as he doesn't get into any food not meant for the little carnivore that he is! High meat/low carb food makes a huge differance in quantity (and smell) of a cats stool - whether it be in the form or canned, such as Before Grain, premade raw, or home-prepared raw.
I've heard good things about the cat "litter lockers" but have never used them. The doggie waste bags would work as well...however they make the same thing for babies diapers, and if you get those I think they are cheaper than the dog version.

We did actually have a very good experience with the Litter Locker until we went from 2 cats to 5 cats. It just wasn't made to deal with so many little poopers. However, we passed the whole thing along to a girlfriend who only has one kitty, and she is still using it after four years.

Cat's Pride with the pink lid is a scoopable and flushable kitty litter. By scooping and disposing of the feces, the smell is gone instead of being trapped in a garbage pail of some type.
-
When you change a cat's litter, just like when you change their food, you do it a little bit at a time. So get the Cats Pride now, and mix a little bit into the existing litter. Every time you need to add litter to the box, put in a little more Cats Pride and a little less of whatever you are using now. That why the change over is gradual and doesn't upset kitty, so she won't start avoiding her box all together.
When you change food brands you do the same thing so that you don't give kitty an upset tummy.

We have 14 cats. We use World's Best Cat litter made from ground corn cobs. It is all natural, clumps well, and is virtually odorless. We scoop 8 pans twice daily. Scooped litter goes in small plastic trash bags and then into a larger plastic trash bag, all of which goes out with the trash once a week. We don't have an odor problem in the house (not just our opinion, it's the most frequent surprised comment we get from visitors when they learn how many cats we have.) I believe they make a flushable version which would work well for one kitty. Good luck to you Casey.

Spice, Bronson, and Melinda share one large pan, and they are fine with this. They like scoopable litter and any national brand is fine. I scoop everytime I use the toilet (Their pan is next to the toilet). I throw the bag of used littet out every morning into the dumpster.
