Morning, Deb. Yes, it's very sad. I knew the pilot slightly, as a neighbour. They haven't released the names of the other victims yet. It will be hard for the locals as most of them have grown up together, gone to school together, worked together and volunteered together as fire brigade, ambulance drivers, etc. The local police are also members of the volunteer fire brigade, and we already know that many of the emergency workers have had to deal with the deaths of their friends in the accident today. It is such a tiny town.

Jane, I have been thinking of that all day, knowing how small the community is makes it even harder. Have had them in my thoughts and prayers for their families and friends.

I feel for the family and friends who were there watching the balloon when it all happened. One family had given the balloon ride to their parents as a Christmas gift.
They showed a cafe on TV where the people were meeting up for breakfast after the ride, all the tables were set and ready. The cafe was closed out of respect. Quite heart wrenching to watch.Posted 4 months ago by Moonshadow_NZ #

Wild Oats, MS, it's the closest cafe to me, though not my local. I think it will be a very sad town tomorrow when we know who is lost. And so sad for the people who came here for a lovely Christmas summer holiday and have met tragedy instead. So many Wellingtonians love to come up here.

Just read the update and saw some of the pictures of the emergency response vehicles and people who came out, just the pictures alone tell the story...

Tomorrow and Monday Jcat will be tough for many. I must say you live in a lovely looking little country town.
Shadz has finally settled and I'm feeling very tired so I'll say goodnight to you both and head off for some sleep. It's still a muggy night despite the rain, guess that's because it's the tail end of a tropical storm.
Nighty night, sweet dreams for you both when you get to bed. Chin scritches for Libs & Millie and The Crew.
Catch you both tomorrow.Posted 4 months ago by Moonshadow_NZ #

Oh, Deb, that's great. I'm really glad to hear that about Elizabeth, I do hope she's happy :-)
From what the police officer said, the balloon did take off in my road as usual this morning. When I first arrived here, the sound of the burners always used to wake me up at dawn but I guess I've got so used to them, I just sleep right through them now. If I went and opened my front door at that time though I could see the balloon rising up into the sky, it was always an amazing sight. They are very pretty to watch.

G'night Jan, sleep well and hope that tomorrow is a better day, scritches and headbonks to HRH in the morning.
Jane, the countryside is very pretty near you, I had seen it on Google but its not quite the same there.

I have always wanted to go to New Mexico and see the big festival they have there annually. In the old town I lived in, they would launch and fly on our side of the mountain ranges.....very beautiful, very noisy when they were launching and flying overhead.

Nighty-night, MS, sleep well and sweet dreams. Scritches to Shadz from Miss Millie and Libs. (Miss Millie has just thrown herself into the computer tower :( but she doesn't seem hurt.) It is a nice town, not as pretty as a couple of the surrounding smaller towns, which still have so much of their Victorian architecture -- we lost most of ours in the 42 earthquake -- but it has a nice family feeling to it. Everybody still says hullo to their neighbours and to strangers as well.
Deb, that sounds lovely. I can imagine flying over the New Mexico desert would be amazing.

Lol, don't all tortie's do that....Ms. B looked like the gentlest beautiful kitty until she got ticked at her crew mates....then it was whap-city!

Hee hee, that's so true. Millie doesn't whap though, if she lifted a front paw, she'd fall over. Millie launches herself at you in a full frontal body slam. Her whole body is a licensed weapon, lol. Off to bed now, Deb, hope the rest of the time goes quickly at *that place* for you. SLeep well and sweet dreams when you get home. Scritches to the Crew and tell them to let meowmy sleep.
-
G'night my friend, sleep well and have nice dreams, scritches and headbonks from the Crew to the girls and I hope that you can sleep in also.

Accidents like the balloon crash are devistating. For those that were in the balloon and those watching below, I can't imagine the fear and horror of it all. My prayers are with all families involved and to the community, may the outpouring of love and support help those grieving heal.

Oh dear, it made my heart sad to read about the balloon crash!..... they do that here just outside of the City limits in an extended community called "Brandon"............... my MIL has taken both my children and all of her grandchildren on a 'hot air balloon ride' for their 13th birthdays........ it's her tradition!................ so sorry for those families and your town, Jcat!
...............I see the Cafe is open, I'll hop over there.... just wanted to say night and send prayers for the balloon families!
