Thank you all so much for your thoughts, prayers and kind words. My dad was a very special person, I think the kindest person I've ever known, with deep principles and a wicked sense of humour. It was very unexpected. He had a check-up at his doc 12 days ago and everything seemed okay. He had a normal day for him -- driving into the city and doing some research at the library, cutting the hedge in the garden, watching a DVD with my mum. In the early hours, asleep, in bed, he had a massive heart attack and died virtually instantly. He hated hospitals and being sick, so it was a blessing for him to go that way but my mum is bereft -- they would have celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary this year.
He brought home our first cat. My mum said he just said one day, I think we'll get a cat and he took 18-month-old me off to the SPCA to choose a kitten. I still remember coming home with Samantha, the first of many. His present cat, Sam, is lost without him.

Thank you, MS and Kilroy, GD, Joan and GA, you're right, I was very very lucky. I have just realised that the kitten for Jan 13 (the day he died) has our family name as his first name. It was very weird to look at that day's piccy and see my dad's name. I think he is having a wee chuckle at me from wherever he is. Thank you, KM, for choosing that kitten for that day.

Dear JCat, I am so sorry about your Dad. It is a huge shock for those left behind when a loved one dies suddenly like that, although it is what we all wish for ourselves.

Oh JCAT, we love you so much! Your dad sounds like he was an amazing man and a wonderful influence on you. Who can say they got to go pick out their first cat at 18 months?!? I am still sending you prayers, well wishes and lots of hugs (for your mum as well). I hope your mum and your dad's kitty snuggle close and remember that they have this lovely little crazy cat family sending thoughts, prayers, hugs, and white light to NZ!
