Hi I just adopted a 3 yr old cat yesterday. Last night it jumped up on the couch and sat on my lap and stayed there for quite a while. I noticed tho that when I pet him, or when he is on his back and I try to rub his stomach, he hisses at me.....This is probably common for a new cat right? I wonder if anyone knows about how long the getting used to period is for a new cat?

New cat hisses at me

Hi there, Hietak and welcome to TDK. Things are often slow here at the weekend, but you have just joined a most friendly, knowledgeable and helpful group of people.
It takes quite a while for a new cat to settle in, and jumping up onto your lap is very encouraging. My Garbo (the black and white cat in my avatar) spent the first few weeks with me firmly ensconced under the television set, refusing to come out at all when people were present.
Some cats never like you to touch their bellies, even though they roll over and offer them to you - the result is often a scratched hand. So take it slowly and gently. If he is already confident enough to trust your lap, he will probably settle into allowing you to stroke him in a week or so.

Congrats on the new kitty :)
Take you time and let the kitty get to know you.

This is normal behavior for a cat that has been struck with a hand. Hands should only be used for love, not hitting. It will take time for him to trust you, just be patient. Many cats won't let you touch their belly, like my Gatsby--he always rolls over (maybe he was imitating Sheba, who loved her belly-rubs) but won't allow us to rub his belly (I am positive he was never abused). Try giving him treats when you pet him, that way he will associate petting with something positive. Good luck!

Do you know the background of the cat? It sounds like it may have been abused in it's former home. Or lack socialization skills. Be patient. Wait for the cat to come to you for inattention. Don't rub a cat's belly unless you know they like it, most cat's don't like it.
