Hi, Piandi. Unfortunately, I am in New Zealand so don’t know much about Indian types of pet food but both Royal Canin and Whiskas have good reputations here in New Zealand, so I would hope those would be okay in India too. Even if you can’t feed wet food all the time, some Whiskas red tuna a couple of times a week would be better than no wet food. With dry food, you must make sure that your kitten has access to fresh clean drinking water, 24/7, as they will need more water to help digest the dry food.

Both kittens and cats love a varied diet. Even if your supply of commercial food is very limited, have you thought of trying to vary his diet with goats milk (a nice treat for cats and kittens and very good for them — not cows’ milk as that is hard to digest) or fresh raw meat, if it’s available and you don’t mind feeding it (I realise you may have religious objections), and you know it comes from a reputable supplier? I feed my cats raw chopped chicken livers, minced beef, ox heart, steak and kidney. I know you can also give them chicken necks. And if you can buy canned sardines (for people or pets), those make a great change. Best of luck. I hope someone who knows about foods available in India can help you more.

    First choice: Royal Canin

    Second choice: Whiskas

    Third choice: Me-O

    Fourth choice: Hills

The reason I rate them that way is the ingredients.

As Jcat said, if you have a source of meat, you could check out feeding raw instead. If you want to read a bit about how to make it so it is balanced I can try post some links (though most of the times I post any links, my post never goes through).

For my four week old kitten, I’m going with Royal Canin. I haven’t cleared it with the vet yet, but I think it is one of the better brands. I know you’re supposed to check ingredients on the package and look for real meats and veggies, and few preservatives.

Like Mo says, the ones with the highest level of meat are the best for your baby. I would avoid feeding a diet of mostly tuna, just use it for an occasional treat.

In your case, where your options are limited, I would definitely look into feeding raw, at least for one meal a day. If that sounds doable, ask Mo to provide you with some links on feeding raw. She knows a lot about it and can help you develop a diet for your fur baby that is both appropriate for kitty’s age and your resources.

Use whatever has the most meat and least amount of grain.
