Hello, I have a 4 and a half week old kitten who needs to be introduced to solid food. Problem is, he only seems to like dry food, but it seems too hard for him, and he can barely break it apart. He doesn’t like it when it is soaked in formula, and he is scared of wet food. I have had him watch my big cats eat and lap up water, he seems to get really scared and run away. He won’t lap up formula from a saucer, and I mixed some wetfood in his bottle, but he still gets scared. Haha, any advice on how to make this easier?

First, let me ask, are you trying to feed adult cat dry food or kitten dry food? The adult cat food kibbles will be too big and hard for a small kitten. If your kitten is having trouble with kitten food kibbles, then it may not be ready to eat dry food yet.

It’s not a good idea to wet down dry kibbles. They will spoil quickly and make a kitten sick. (or adult cat for that matter)

To introduce wet canned food, try dabbing tiny amounts on the kitten’s nose. It will automatically lick its nose and get the taste of the canned food that way. Just keep dabbing TINY amounts on so it eats a very small spoonful. Then give it a rest. Maybe an hour later, try it again. After a few times, most kittens learn that the wet food is okay and will by then be familiar with the smell of wet food in a dish.

Its kitten food, Purina Smart Balance for kittens. I don’t have much better choices there. He has all of his baby teeth in and spends more time biting the nipple than drinking from it. I usually remove any food he doesn’t finish quickly and clean out the bowl. I will definitely try the nose idea, he didn’t respond from getting it on his paws.

Skyron (an expert TDK member!) always recommends Royal Canin Baby Mousse for weaning. I think he might not be ready yet too, some kittens don’t want a bar of it till much later.

Haha i just hope he stops being scared of it, no matter how cute it is. I will check for the royal canin, there aren’t too many good places to get kitten supplies. The petco here rarely restocks kitten supplies when they run out. I will check around!

Royal Canin also makes teeny tiny kitten kibble for the wee ones called Babycat. Easy for them to manage. The mousse like already suggested is great too.

Maybe u can try feeding cloud some wet food out of your hand for starters.

Very cute image tho, being scared of wet food! 🙂

We used the Babycat food from Royal Canin for our boys when they were tiny. LOL – Murphy had been used to eating wet food before he came to us, but the first time we tried to give it Ozzie he just looked at it for the longest time like he was saying “What in the world is THAT?” Finally, he saw Murphy wolfing it down and decided to give it a try.

Perhaps you can get the Royal Canin Baby Mousse online? I order all our litter and cat food from a site called Petflow; they have a flat delivery rate of less than $5 which is really nice given how heavy litter is!
