  1. Well, while I was out today helping friends move into their house, Pretty Girl had kittens! So far, it looks like one tortie, one black, one tuxedo (black & white), one brown or gray tabby, and one brown or gray patched tabby (with white splotches). It feels as if she may have at least one more kitten in her, so I'll be checking again tonight and in the morning to see how she's doing. Everyone looks healthy and is nursing well, and Pretty Girl looks like she's doing well, too! Yay!

A strange question, though, on one of the other kitties from Mama Kitty's litter. Violet looks like she has double upper canines. I haven't been able to get a good look at her lower canines yet, to see if they're doubled, too.

Is this how baby teeth normally progress to adult teeth in cats? I don't recall ever seeing this before, in any of my cats. Or is it possible she really has doubled canines (upper or upper & lower)? If she has doubled canines, but doesn't appear to be having any problems because of them, would this be something to consider corrective dental surgery for?

  2. Congrats(?) to Pretty Girl! I hope the babies will find excellent homes.

My guess is Violet has both deciduous teeth and upcoming permanent teeth. I suppose her baby teeth should drop soon/be pulled soon to prevent erraneous biting.

  3. anncetera...are Pretty Girl & her kittens inside or outside? My feral Meezer has a another litter well hidden litter out there. She's too feral & smart to be trapped. Her daughter Also named Prettygirl,is I think pregnant. She's not as smart as mom,& not quite as feral either. The other morning she let me pet her three times in a row before she backed off. If I thought I'd have anything left resembling an arm,I'd have grabbed her & choked her unconscious if it meant catching her. I don't in any way condone violence towards any animals, but, you can see & feel the frustration in my words on how upsetting it is to see animals continually giving birth. If anyone has felt that frustration,I know you have. Good luck w/your newbies & Pretty Girl.

  4. Congrats on the new babies. Oooh I love torties, patched and callie babies, such striking color combos and patterns. I bet all of those babies will find good homes.

As for double canines never seen it or heard of it.

  6. Susie, I bet if you exercise enough patience, you'll be able to get your Prettygirl feral trapped. If she's trusting enough to allow you to pet her three times, she's trusting enough to learn to eat food out of a trap. The trick really is to go slowly. Introduce the trap, and the food maybe 10 or 15 feet away; keep the trap jammed open, so there's no chance it'll shut. (I find a piece of rebar through the trap, keeping the door open torward the top, works well.)

Then it's a matter of each day, moving the food dish closer to the trap until, one day, the dish is right in front of the entrance to the trap. Then you spend up to a week putting food in the dish, and putting the dish inside the trap. For the first day or two you might put it close to the entrance, inside, but then push the dish all the way to the back of the trap.

Once the cat is eating from the trap, all the way at the back of the trap, give it another day or two to make sure it's become a new habit. Then the trap can be baited & sprung for the day you can get the cat to a spay/neuter clinic.

I know it's hard, but hang in there; you're doing every cat you trap a big favor by getting it altered. Sorry they aren't being more cooperative for you!

I'll see if I can get photos of the kittens today, and get them posted on Catster sometime tonight.

  7. Well, I doublechecked Violet's mouth, and she has doubled upper canines only. The lower canines are single and seem to seat well with the upper canines, thus far. However, I still think we're going to make a vet visit within the month, and see if extraction is needed. I don't want her to have any difficulty with disease or eating. I'll have to take a photo.

Oh, and I have some photos online of Pretty Girl and her babies, though they're low-quality (from a cellphone). See photos at Catster: http://www.catster.com/cats/631229

  9. My Rotley had milk teeth until he was five months old (double canines), and then he spat them out one sunny morning. They are completely normal.
