How neat! I saved this to my favorites, when can we expect chick to hatch?
Posted 2 years ago by paulajeanne #
It usually takes about 30 days for the eggs to hatch.
Last year, the momma owl laid her eggs late in the summer and didn't spend much time incubating the eggs. Eventually both owls left the next box. Hopefully this year, the momma owl will take better care of the eggs and both will hatch.

Yay! She's now laid another!

Will have to send this link to my SIL, she is an owl fan. Great viewing this.

She's been away from the eggs for a couple of hours tonight. It's cold there and there is a chance that these eggs won't hatch unless the momma owl gets her feathery butt back onto those eggs.

Wish there was sound too. Love the little shimmy shimmy she makes when settling down on the eggs.

Nice to see her back on her eggs. I was getting worried that this would be a repeat of last year when the owl didn't seem to know how to take care of the eggs. Of course the male owl wasn't bringing her food either.
There was sound last year. Hopefully they will get the sound working again this year. The Texas owlcam just went back online a couple of days ago.

Well, they just had a little "late night delight" session and no noise even then!

I wish he would huddle up with her; it's 34 there! Besides, must get pretty old, standing on one leg like that.

I just read the comments and people are saying that there are now three eggs in the nest!
Last year, the owls in the California nest box laid 7 eggs. All hatched but only 4 of the babies survived. I am curious to see how many eggs the Texas owls will lay this year. I really hope they hatch.

He brought her something last night (actually early this morning - couldn't sleep) that I couldn't figure out. It was big like a squirrel but couldn't detect a tail. She really ripped into it good, and then went back to the eggs. At that time, still just two. I'm really going to be enjoying checking in on this, owlwatcher. Thank you so much for bringing it to our attention.

ooooo...she stood up! I can see all three eggs. What a good momma she's being!

That is so cool! Before she went back down she carefully turned them a bit!

If I didn't have a bad tooth infection (no tooth-ache just a tender jaw and slight fever - thank God for plenty of antibiotics) and a mountain of homework that I have to finish before Monday, I would be watching the owls all the time.
Last year, when I had two computer classes one right after the other, I used to have the owls up on my screen whenever possible. There was an option of viewing the camera in a different window so I could have the small window up on the screen even while I was doing my assignments in a small window or listening to the lectures so I had the owls with me even at school. I don't know if I will be able to do that this year though.

Well...I finally got my Quick time player reconfigurated and now I can see what all the fuss is about..Awwwwww! Now I'm going back every ten minutes to see what's up. In Tx it's about 4:30 right now, isn't it? It's only 2:30 here right now. I can't wait til nighttime to see if Daddy brings home any bacon or if momma has to go hunting part time...
This is soo cool!! I have saved it to my favorites and also will save it at work for the kids to enjoy!
Thanks for sharing this!
Peace
Dorie

There are still only 3 eggs in the box.
Some people who have commented seem to think these are the same owls from last year but I can't remember if the owls were given names last year or not.
The owls from the California nest box have names and I remember there being a discussion about naming the Texas owls. It will probably come up in the comments sooner or later.

I love the little shimmy shimmy shake shake she gives as she lowers herself over the eggs. And she is so careful with her feet, stepping around them!

Just had a funny experience with her. Was watching when she suddenly swiveled her head and I swear, looked straight at me! I ducked, my thoughts being, oh no she caught me spying on her! Took a second for my rational mind to catch up with what I'd done! A person can get addicted to this very quickly.

LOL!!
I have done the same thing!! One of the owls will stare at the camera and I will either freeze perfectly still so I won't scare them or quickly close the window so they don't see me!!
It's easy to forget that I am watching through a camera and they cannot see me. *grins sheepishly*

You should have seen the California owl with seven eggs last year. That poor owl would have to be so careful not to step on an egg and then try her best to make sure all of them were covered. It was funny when they all hatched and got old enough that they were moving around a lot. She would try her best to cover all the chicks to keep them warm and once in a while a little head would poke up between her wing and her body or underneath her tail feathers. It is so fun to watch the baby owls but you have to brace yourself for the bad things that can happen to them. Sometimes, if there are a lot of babies, one or two won't get enough to eat and will die. Or, if there isn't enough food being brought in by the parents, one of the older siblings will eat one of the younger siblings. It can be difficult to watch sometimes but it is so wonderful to see them grow up and finally leave the nest.

Hey, I only saw two eggs this time! could she have broken one? It also looked like she was picking up something from between the other two. Oh dear, I hope not!

Now I can't go to bed until I find out!

A few minutes ago, I saw one of the eggs moved away from the other(s). Hopefully, it just got moved around and there are still 3 eggs. The owls constantly eat insects that live in the nest box - especially if the insects are near the eggs where the owl has to sit. That may have been what she was picking up.
