  1. I keep wanting to give her a little nudge so she will lift up a bit. She does seem to be munching on something.

  2. I just saw three eggs when momma owl stood up. *sighs with relief*

  3. Oh thanks for verifying! Now I can get to bed. See you tomorrow nite!

  4. I've been checking on the owl's nest since last night. I missed it, but I think the male brought her something to eat but haven't seen him in the nest at all since then. I believe I'm seeing a fourth egg in the nest. I was wondering..where do they get water to drink. She rarely seems to leave and the temps there are 81 degrees today. Poor mama must get awful thirsty.... I thought by now he'd be back but maybe it's just too warm for him to enter the nesting box.

  6. Yes..There is definitely four eggs now..How cool!!! I'm beginning to worry about the male..where is he? Maybe he found someplace cooler than the box to sleep. I bet momma owl is mad at him!!! lol..Then again maybe she's happy for the me time... hahahaha

  7. I'm just testing to see if I can post here. I can't post, or read, on any of the other threads. This is terrible!!!

  8. In the comments, a few people have been speculating that the male owl is roosting outside the nest and is still close by.
Last year, the male spent very little time in the box and hardly ever brought food for the female. Hopefully, he has matured a lot this year and will continue to bring the female regular meals. If she has to go out hunting, the eggs won't be incubated enough and they will not hatch.

  9. Well, she's gone too, 3:40 MST. Must have gotten hungry. Bad daddy!

  10. Oh dear, she's still not back at 4:08

Posted 3 years ago by paulajeanne #

  12. She sure looks kinda lonely...Poor dear...I hope nothing has happened to her honey...Does anyone know how she goes about getting water? It was awfully hot in TX. today. I'm such a worry wart...I hope she's ok.

  13. I've read that barn owls get all the water they need from the food they eat.

  14. A couple of people commented that the papa owl came in and mated with the momma owl then left again. Hopefully he is looking for dinner for her. From what people have said so far in the comments, he is not being a good provider and she really needs to eat to keep up her energy and get the water she needs.

  15. Arghhhh!!! At 6:13 West Coast time..She moved to the front of the nest and perched for 4 min. then she turned and moved back toward the eggs..at 6:17 !/2 he came in, mounted her and was out of there by 6:18...Geeeeze..isn't that just like a man? He better come back with some chow or I'll have to stop watching..I get too upset...sniff..she's such a sweet thing, and being a real good momma so far.

  16. She's fed! Big time. Not sure what it is. Gopher maybe.

  17. Momma owl had breakfast waiting for her this morning too. There were at least two pray items that I could see in the box this morning.

Papa owl is also contently roosting in the nest box with momma owl. They look like a happy family this morning.

I am posting this from class so I better get back to work before the instructor catches me.

  18. Was afraid to click on this morning - when I last looked yesterday she was still alone and I was worried something happened to her mate. Happy to hear she has had a meal.

  19. I am so grateful for the owls this morning. This instructor rambles on and on about everything and gets absolutely nowhere. This is the second week of class and we still have no idea of what is expected from us. No syllabus, no assignment schedule .. just an instructor who rambles all over the place. I am sitting right in front of him as I post this and he really doesn't even seem to care.

I am going back to watch the owls now.

  21. Sob! I haven't been able to watch tonight, not getting a feed. Confused, from the comments some people can, some can't. Don't know why. Wah! I wanna see da momma! Kicks chair.

Posted 3 years ago by paulajeanne #

  22. PJ, same here, sometimes I can see the owl and other times nothing but green. I wanna see the owls too, kicks the beanbag.

  25. OMG...5 eggs!!! I've been busy and meaning to go check..gotta go see. I'm so happy dad returned and bestowed such a fine feast for his lady! Way to go dad!

  26. I'm unable to get the feed here today so far but I'm very relieved that she's been well fed and the temps are 61 and maybe more comfortable for momma than the 80's were yesterday.

Posted 3 years ago by Karenopa #

  27. I got my feed back and she looks like she's doing fine. I got to see there are 5 eggs now. How cool! I have a question? I notice that the male is frequently mating with her and does this mean she's developing new eggs already even though she's laying this clutch now? Wouldn't that make her a perpetual incubator? How soon do the hatchlings become independant? I should do my own research I know..I'm lazily trying to cut corners here... :)

  28. Barn owls usually lay between 5-7 eggs in the early spring. The young owls fledge when they're about 8-10 weeks old. If food is plentiful, the female may lay more eggs in the late summer or early fall.

Last year, the Texas owls didn't start laying eggs until the middle of summer when it was too hot. The female never incubated the eggs and the owls eventually abandoned the nest. At that same time, the chicks from the California owls were becoming independent and, one by one, were leaving the nest.

  29. I can't wait until they get the sound going again on the webcam. The male owl is in the nest box and he is staring out the door as if there is something outside that is worrying him. It's unusual for the male to stay in the nestbox this time of night. I hope everything is okay.

    Posted 3 years ago by owlwatcher_974 #

  30. The male was gone from the nest when I just went to look. BTW...thank you very much owlwatcher for answering my questions and for sharing this wonderful experience! I've been fascinated with this beautiful couple for days now. My hubby is too. I wonder how many people are actually sharing in this experience. It'd probably blow our minds to know how many....
