  1. I just saw something that was soooo cute! The male owl was preening the female owl and she turned to him and it looked like she kissed him! They had their beaks together for about 15 seconds before the female owl turned away and the male owl started preening her again.

  3. It looks like momma owl has laid a sixth egg this morning!

    Posted 3 years ago by owlwatcher_974 #

  4. 6 eggs..how many days do they usually lay before they are done??

  5. owlwatcher, I was so excited! I was there!

  6. paulajeanne, You're so lucky! I wish I had been there to see it.

2bpurring, Barn owls usually lay 5-7 eggs

  7. She's in the box right now!!!! How exciting

  8. I knew I saw 6 eggs in there this morning. She's being such a wonderful mom. I believe the male has been bringing her more than sufficient food also.

  9. Is she sleeping?? I don't see her moving?

    Posted 3 years ago by 2bpurring #

  10. oh never mind..just after I posted that she looked up..

    Posted 3 years ago by 2bpurring #

  11. Sometimes I think the feed freezes..I've had to start it over at times to get it back..usually by refreshing.
PJ how wonderful that you were able to witness that miracle of egg 6. It will be soooooo exciting when the time comes that the eggs hatch. No doubt, they'll hatch in the order that she lays them and there will be plenty of warning so that maybe you can actually witness that part of egg 6 too. That would be sooooo awesome.

  12. How long do suppose before they begin to hatch?

    Posted 3 years ago by 2bpurring #

  13. It takes about 30 days I believe...which means it's less than 3 weeks to go. I'm just guessing..It seems that she pretty much layed a new egg every two days.

  14. I'm guessing that they'll probably hatch at the same rate of speed that she layed them. With a family that size, I figure that's a great thing for poor mom and dad when they start demanding meals...I can't imagine! It should be something to see.

  15. Wow, I was watching and she looked right at the camera and got up and I could see all 6 eggs. She turned around and settled back down. I think she is falling asleep. Amazing!

Okay she just barfed up what looks like a round pellet of some kind. Now it looks like she is eating a bug as she is watching something and keeps digging at it.

  16. Karin, that was an owl pellet. It has fur and bones in it from her food, the parts that were indigestible. They are fascinating to take apart. I ordered them for my biology students, and they would try to put the bones together to make tiny mouse skeletons! Kinda gross, but interesting too. Oh yeah, forgot to add the pellets had been sterilized and freeze dried before we got to them! I would not want to dig into the one she just hacked up!

  17. The owl looks like she is uncomfortable as she gets getting up and adjusting herself..then she sits down and seems to fall asleep. It looks as though she is getting "cat naps". I wonder if she is restless due to being hungry? I wonder how long ago she ate.

  18. I wonder if laying on all those eggs feels like trying to sleep on rocks? Might be pretty restless myself!

Posted 3 years ago by paulajeanne #

  19. Yeah..you have a point there..must feel like sitting on rocks. Ooh she looked right at the camera.

Posted 3 years ago by SylvesterMiasMomma #

  20. Doesn't that make you want to duck out of sight? I have to laugh at myself, it seems I've been doing that a lot! Duh!

Posted 3 years ago by paulajeanne #

  21. I don't duck but I do freeze up. She seems to be trying to get some bug in the stuffing around her. I hope she gets fed soon.

Posted 3 years ago by SylvesterMiasMomma #

  22. I've yet to catch them at a time when pop is bringing in supper. or breakfast or lunch or snakkies! Would like to see that.

Posted 3 years ago by paulajeanne #

  23. Yikes...not sure about eating time but I would like to see her get fed. It looks as though it is nighttime and she may also be restless because of wanting to go out and hunt like she normally does. Where is the dad to be? Sheesh.

Posted 3 years ago by SylvesterMiasMomma #

  24. Looks like hunger got to her, just flew off!

Posted 3 years ago by paulajeanne #

  25. Now she's back, he came in, did the thing, and flew off aqain, but didn't leave any food! Isn't that just like a man?

Posted 3 years ago by paulajeanne #

  26. I just took a break from my mountain of homework to check in. The owls are a wonderful distraction from reading "The Grapes of Wrath" and doing journal assignments for the book.

Momma owl seems to be settling down a bit. Papa owl should be bringing food soon. He seems to be much better about taking care of his mate this year than he was last year - that is assuming this is the same pair from last year.

I can't wait until they get the sound going again. The people who take care of the nest box cam said that they would get it going again as soon as possible. It would be nice to at least get to hear the owls since I can't watch the screen while I am doing my homework.

  27. The male must have brought her something during the night because this morning when we checked in on her she was definitely eating on something and it was alot bigger than a mouse. It really put me at ease.

  28. I love watching this and also hatching chicken eggs with my class at the same time, our chicks are due on 3/17 I think the 1st one should be named Patrick!!
Owlwatcher thank you for this link!

  29. I was just watching 10:19pm est and the male came in with a mouse and gave it to her and flew off. so she's eaten tonight!

Posted 3 years ago by 4 kits staff #

  30. I've just been watching the nest...It's noon west coast..and I had to laugh cause the male was obviously kissing up to momma..maybe wanting some tail...haha..the rodent that he brought in apparently hadn't been consumed because I watched him when it was apparent she wasn't in the mood.. he went to the rear of the nest and picked up the rodent, brought it to her (come on honey...just eat something, it'll put you in the mood) she pecked it away like.."no..I asked for vanilla, not choc." then he proceeded to go ahead and have a snack himself. They really are a sweet couple.
