Thunder does his loving on an old sheepskin rug. He'll bliss out completely for 5 to 10 minutes, kneeding, drooling, and purring. If I move him in the slightest, he'll move back and start over. Considering the traumatic beginning he's had, I'm glad he can experience this measure of joy, contentment, and bliss. It is like a trance, no doubt about it. KatKat observes him doing that, and probably tsktsk's to herself "why can't he be more like me?" :)

Kneading and sucking
(39 posts)-
I just discovered a 3 1/2 week old kitten trapped in between some fencing in the nearby city. I took him home and have had him 3 days so far. He does the kneading and the purring thing too and usually when he does that I try to offer him his bottle, but on occasion he doesn't take it and just curls up on my shoulder kneading and sucking till he passes out. I am glad I found this thread because I was worried I wasn't feeding him correctly.

My new kitten, Duncan (13 weeks), started sucking my hair last week. We adopted him when he was 8 weeks and he was weened properly and cared for very well.
I've had several cats who have done this---curiously all male---and it seems in my case, it's about bonding and feeling close.
Yes, it gets annoying sometimes....but each of the cats in the past gave up this habit as they got older!
Actually, I think I'll miss the nuzzling and attention from Duncan if he ever decides to stop. I will certainly miss giggling about the sucking sounds he makes. My husband thinks the whole thing is a riot! Of course, no one is kneading sharp kitten nails into HIS neck!!!Posted 2 years ago by Mermandrea #

My little Lucy's a kneader and a suckler. Her favorite thing is to suck on my shirt when I'm lying in bed. She will sleep the whole night with my shirt in her mouth.
But I don't always want her kneading me all night (it's hard to sleep!), so I've been able to teach her to accept a spare t-shirt or blanket to suckle as a replacement if I turn her away. Most of the time she looks so disappointed to not get the "real thing" however, that I have to acquiesce an let her suck on me.
Lucy's brother August is the most proud and dignified of cats (even at 6 months old) and will give her a look sometimes when she's suckling that shows an utter lack of understanding of how she can be so undignified in her sucking behavior.
It's funny how different my two little littermates are. I love them both!
