    Hi there guys,

We are a 2.5 week old kitten we are fostering that we found this past weekend. He’s actually been doing really great the past few days but today he is testing my patience a little…. mostly by worrying me.

I was starting to see a nice little pattern in his eating, but today he doesn’t want to eat as much as he has been during his feedings. He’s eating anywhere to 3-7ml less… the 3 doesn’t bother me so much but the 7 kind of does. He has also figured out a “trick” where he can use his bottle as a pacifier without ingesting a whole lot of milk so when I am feeding him, he likes to do this and drag out our feeding sessions for a very long time. Is there anything I can do to encourage him not to do this? Is it “normal” for his eating habits to fluctuate day by day?

He is also a gassy little guy. I can often feel gas bubbles traveling in his belly when feeding him. I am sometimes able to get him to pass gas but he tends to get bloated. Is there anything I can do to help with this?

I have no idea what is considered “normal” for kitten poops. He usually has one large poop a day and then several small ones (might only be like a few little ‘bits’ coming out). He seems to pee a lot, I don’t know of it this is good or bad. But I have noticed that when we first found him his pee was more yellow and now it it seems much clearer so I’m assuming he was somewhat dehydrated when we found him?

I’ve been feeding him every 5 hours and this seems sufficient for him. He sleeps with a couple small stuffed animals and a very soft blanket and heating pad. Only cries when I am stimulating him to pee or poo or when god forbid I have to wash his blanket as he doesn’t seem to be fan of sleeping on towels.

Bless you all who are foster mommies/daddies and do this on a regular basis! I had no idea what a rough job fostering a tiny baby kitty could be.

You can try spreading the feedings out slightly longer. Try adding another 30 minutes. For the gasses, put him on your shoulder and pat his back. Also make sure you hold the bottle at a 45 degree angle to make sure he doesn’t get bubbles. Unfortunately kittens eat at their leisure so the extended feedings cant be helped. Often this is the best time to strengthen their trust in humans. My little Cloud absolutely adores me and I adore him and he was my first bottle baby. Their bottles are comforting to them. Its the only familiar thing they have.

    Thanks for your response! =)

I was growing more concerned tonight after I posted this because he was sucking and sucking on the bottle tonight and eating so very little but sucking in a lot of air. It made me wonder if maybe the hole was a bit too small so I enlarged it slightly and he seemed quite surprised when he tried the bottle again to find it was giving up milk much more easily. He actually drank quite a bit and then found a way to latch on to slow it down and use it as more of a paci again which wasn’t a big deal… but once he got that milk in him he actually let go this time and settled down and actually slept on my stomach. That’s the first time he’s really done that. Seemed less stressful for the both of us instead of of him suckling at the bottle for a half hour, barely taking in any milk, screaming at it, and then repeating the procedure. I definitely don’t want to take away any source of comfort from him but I hope to prevent him from eating too little and swallowing too much air.

If you are worried about the air sucking, definitely burp him for a minute or so. You may not hear anything but it should help with any gas. If you see milk coming out of his nose, it means he aspirated it. If this happens, hold him upside down and pat his back until he coughs it up. If he won’t cough it up, support his neck with one hand, and his stomach with the other and make a downward swooping motion. The only concern of opening the whole more is that they take in too much at once. If you hold the bottle upside down with milk in it, a small droplet should form, but not drip out. You shouldn’t have anymore problems with him eating too little. At 2.5 weeks kittens usually eat about 15ml – 25ml. At 3-4 weeks they will eat a lot more. Good luck with him! He sounds like a cutie! My baby Cloud only slept on me once because he would move too much. (:

Thanks! I am so paranoid with this guy, I really want him to make it.

He has hit a lot of ‘milestones’ that certain sites say shouldn’t happen until 3-4 weeks but we are quite sure of his age. He’s been eating a lot and now I’m paranoid about overfeeding him. I always stop feeding him when he starts to make little milk bubbles with his mouth and spit out the nipple. Enlarging the hole has worked better for getting him to feed more efficiently but I don’t know if he could get too much too fast or if he will still monitor himself like he has been and stop when he is full… His poops are confusing to me because some places i have read that they should be well formed and other places says no, they are a little messier like toothpaste or jam. His are definitely on the toothpaste/jam side… messier but no diarrhea. I sometimes hear (and smell) him pass gas as well.

He throws such a fit when I stimulate him to pee or poo that I can’t figure out if he just really hates it or if something is bothering him. He absolutely hates it but as soon as you put him down he’s fine. I think part of it is I hold him on his back to do it and he hates that position.

Hehe no kitten likes their little butts to be rubbed. Toothpaste is normal, and so is a mustard colored poop as well. Also, sometimes they have a little bit of blood in there too, this is also not a worry as many kittens have worms. He will be ok to be de-wormed at 6 weeks old. It is better to feed less more often so the baby doesn’t gorge on milk or accidentally aspirate their milk. The milestones are more like guidelines, my Cloud was purring at 1 week old when most say kittens don’t purr till 3 weeks. The most important milestones are, doubling weight in the first week, opening eyes in second week, opening ears and pottying on their own at the third week, eating solid food and drinking water at the fourth week, and being completely weaned and solid on their feet in the 6th-8th week. All kittens are different. Some mature fast, some slow. My Cloud was on his bottle until 6 weeks old, where my foster kitten Blackberry stopped at 3.5 weeks and would not take the bottle again. Every day and every week he is healthy and alive is a step forward and makes his chances a lot better. Just keep doing everything as you are. Sometimes kittens just don’t make it and we can’t do anything about it. He sounds healthy and strong, keep him clean, fed, warm, and loved. You are doing well (:

Thanks so much for talking to me about my little guy. He’s been such a little fighter. I am a natural born worrier so this has been a challenge for me lol He is teaching me a lot about just trying to live in the moment and not think “what if this goes wrong or that”… I suppose it is mostly so nerve wracking because I have never done this before.

I’m feeling better about his eating now. He’s seemed to have moved back towards his pattern of being a little piggy, but he eating what is expected at his age. He’s really good at controlling the flow so I don’t really worry about him aspirating any fluids. He will be a full 3 weeks in a couple of days, I think we might celebrate it by picking out a name for him. I’ve been reluctant to get too attached because I have always heard how hard it can be to rear orphaned kittens. (although admittedly I am attached enough the way it is lol)

I think I’ve been reading too much about orphaned kitties too and that is making me perhaps worry more. Should I just assume if he is eating normal amounts, gaining weight, and pooing (even very small amounts at times) that things are going okay? (It seems like if I’m not worrying about his eating I’m worried about his pooping lol)

I’ve started to teach him more about cuddle times and liking pettings and he is starting to LOVE getting his little head rubbed after eating. It’s so cute =) He purrs often, walks really well, ears are erect…just hitting that really adorable stage.

Well he sounds like he is growing into a sweet little boy. I named my fosters, i mean, i raised them from 8 day old babies so why not? They will always have a piece of me when they go. Even if their names are changed. And whether or not you are going to keep him, you still raised him! As long as he gives you no sign that he is sick, you can assume he is healthy. Now, that is not an excuse not to go to the vet. Unfortunately, sometimes things happen we don’t forsee. I had a friend who lost 3 of her 4 kittens because of completely unforseen accidents. One of hers aspirated his milk. Another had a neurological problem because he was chilled. Keep worrying! Kittens are very very delicate. You don’t need to obsess, but the worrying makes you a good meowmy. If you keep worrying youll notice if something goes wrong. He sounds happy, healthy, and adorable! You are doing great with him. If you can you should get a picture!

I will try to get a pic up in the next day or so!

I’ve moved past worrying about him eating tonight to his poop and I’ve tried searching but I can’t seem to find the answers I’m looking for. I think I’m most frustrated b/c when we first found him the first couple days he was having formed poops and after we introduced the formula they became more runny and messier. I don’t know if it is because he intake has increased but they seem to be getting a little more runny. Sometimes he’ll just let out a little bit, enough to make a mess on his tail or something and then nothing. And then tonight I was cuddling with him and he had a big screaming fit, checked and sure enough he had pooped and this time I noticed little white bits in it o_0 that almost looked like seeds. I am completely stumped as it to if it is a parasite issue or possibly undigested milk/over feeding? This is the first time I have witnessed that.

After tonight I kind of feel like I’m going crazy with the whole pooping thing b/c it is constantly changing and I don’t feel certain that what is “normal” for this guy.

Where is the line drawn between diarrhea and just looser poops?

Also, assuming every thing ends up working out with this little guy… when should he be treated for parasites and what is the schedule for that?

Chances are he has worms. Now, this isn’t anything to panic about he can be dewormed at 6 weeks, no earlier. Try diluting his formula more. Add another part of water. What are you feeding him? You can add canned pumpkin to his formula. But not pumpkin pie filling. Canned pumpkin helps a lot with forming poop. Diarrhea is uncontrollable. On average before you can even feed him he would be covered in very smelly poop. If he poops when you stimulate him and only has maybe an accident a day it is just loose. When kittens switch from mamas milk to formula it upsets their stomach. Put more water in his formula and feed him a little less. Shoot for about 10-15ml. There is always a possibility it is coccida. If the above doesn’t help then he should be tested for it.

At 6 weeks he can get his first worming and flea treatment. He should be wormed again soon after to make sure it worked. Be sure to do worming with flea treatment because fleas cause worms. At 8 weeks he can get his first 4 in 1. 3 weeks later he gets his second. If you are fostering independently and not through a shelter, I would recommend getting him neutered too. You can charge a fee to cover the costs because if the adopter is a responsible pet owner they would have to pay those prices anyways to get him the basic vet care he needs. Too many people don’t take care of the basic vet needs of animals and those people should probably not have animals.

I am feeding him the canned KMR. I started diluting a tiny bit with water when his pooping started getting a little chaotic and also because he still seemed a little bit dehydrated… his pee was yellower and now it is much more pale to clear. I made some homemade pedialyte(sp) just in case we needed it (keeping in fridge and remaking every 24 hrs)… would that be okay to dilute the formula with instead of straight water?

How much pumpkin should be added if that is tried?

He seems to control his poops so it is just loose then, not uncontrollable squirts or anything.

Combined with his gas and tendency to bloat up some I’m also guessing worms.

When we first found him he was actually having some bowel movements on his own although rubbing against the fabric as he crawled around may have been what was stimulating him. The same thing happens now at times, sometimes when he moving around his bedding or when I have him all wrapped up to snuggle or to contain him a little when it is time to feed him but he’s squirming he will end up having one without direct stimulation. Same with peeing although I think he can actually pee on his own now.

We are not sure yet if we are going to keep him or try to find him a new forever home if he continues to thrive. But regardless he will definitely be wormed, be treated for fleas (luckily none have been found on him at this point), have all his shots, and be neutered! =)

Sounds like he is probably older. The bowel movements definitely indicate he is at least 3 weeks old. The older he gets the more control he has. Give him 2ml of canned pumpkin. You can put this in his mouth directly or puree it until its liquidy. Fill the bottle to 45, do 5ml water and do the rest with Pedialyte. Almost all kittens have worms so its nothing to worry about right now. If he does start getting worse it is probably a stronger parasite and he should be seen by the vet. The canned pumpkin will definitely help. Many people swear by it. I haven’t used it myself but I wish I would have when my fosters started going on their own, and frequently. He sounds very very healthy. I find it impossible to give up kitties that I find on my own. Whatever you do decide he is sure lucky you found him! Someone else might not have cared so much about him.

Kitty is making me stress out again! Just when I was starting to feel more positive about everything too!

Today I noticed a tiny bit of cloudy discharge from his urethra. Never seen it before haven’t seen it since. He’s been peeing normally, normal color, doesn’t seem to be in any pain or anything when peeing. Sooo I’m back to freaking out a little.. I don’t know if this warrants a vet visit at all or just something I should keep an eye on… ??? I’m worried about uti or some other infection now. Especially with the messes he’s made on his bottom from loose stools. Grr.

Pooping is apparently a stressful event for both of us when it comes to him. A few days ago he started throwing an absolute fit when he poops. He’s started pooping after almost every meal and he’s very dramatic about it. I’m usually still holding him when he starts so I try to wipe some away but he usually ends up flailing and gets it all over his tail or something and then earns himself a butt bath under the bathroom sink. His squealing, flailing and getting poop everywhere all over himself every time is trying my nerves so much that I am beyond the point of dreading this kitten pooping. I’m bummed b/c yesterday his poop seemed less loose and then today we are back to the looser ones but that might be my fault since I haven’t used as much water I was the other day in his formula.

I’m committed to doing all I can for this guy but after him, if I never see another kitten butt again it will be too soon!

Well if he keeps having a cloudy discharge he should go to the vet. It could be a UTI. It is possible he may be able to go on his own. After feedings, put him in a litterboxand have him dig around. When my boy started going on his own, he would HATE potty times. You may want to get pedialyte and canned pumpkin (not pumpkin pie filling) to help with hydration and forming the stools. If his appetite changes and he still has diarrhea he should go to the vet. It takes a while for babies to learn how to stay clean. I went through 2 weeks of hell trying to potty train kittens with runny stools. There was poop EVERYWHERE. Get some infants unflavored pedialyte and add it to his formula. If he has teeth you can introduce him to pate mixed with milk and that could help with the stool.

So far his only appetite changing is he is turning into a pig! He put his bottle away within minutes tonight!! I couldn’t even believe it.

I am going to the store so I am going to pick up the canned pumpkin to try. =)

Definitely keeping an eye on the discharge thing, if I notice it again I will call the vet.

His teeth are coming in… they still seem to be a bit under the skin. I took a tiny bit of kitten pate with KMR tonight and put some on his lips and tried to get a little in his mouth. Absolutely no interest yet. He looked at me like I was insane.

Haha they don’t always understand that we are trying to help them. Cloud went straight for dry food and for fear of him hurting his teeth I had to mix it with milk to make sure it would be safe. Let me know how the pumpkin goes. Definitely dilute the formula more to make sure he is hydrated. He should get more of his teeth in a week and should be introduced to wetfood even more at that time, whether he likes it or not! Cloud couldn’t give up his bottle until he was 6 weeks old, and he started to lose his suckle reflex.

I ended up calling the emergency vet tonight b/c little dude peed and there was some of that cloudy discharge. They told me I could keep an eye on him and wait until our vet opened on Monday but if anything changes with him he should be seen immediately. I wanted so bad to just take him there tonight but they charge an outrageous sum for just the visit alone, let alone any diagnostics.

I just hope everything else stays okay until Monday. =/

It is probably a UTI. It is fairly common in cats but it is probably causing him discomfort. It may hurt him to pee. Use a cotton ball to stimulate him, and do it a little softer. If it is a UTI it isn’t anything that you did. The baby probably got an infection from being out and feral. As long as he is eating and hydrated it shouldn’t be an emergency. You can test his hydration by pinching the nape of his neck and lifting slightly. Then let go and watch for how fast it goes down. If he is hydrated it should snap down fairly quickly and refit onto his figure. If it goes slowly or doesn’t go down all the way he needs more fluid and should go on pedialyte. If it doesn’t go down much at all he should go to an emergency vet and get IV fluids.

He is doing really well so unless something dramatic happens in the next 24 hours he should be okay until I can call our regular vet. He is definitely well hydrated and his eating habits are A+… the way he sucks down his bottles lately you would think he is starving but his fat little tummy says otherwise lol

I haven’t seen anymore discharge or anything. He’s still peeing well and it isn’t oddly colored or anything.

Our vet shall be called first thing tomorrow morning however just to see what they think and if they want to see him.

I’ve been doing the pumpkin in his food and I think it may already be working, perhaps a little too well. He’s let out a little poo but hasn’t done his predictable after dinner poops after eating. We’ll see how it goes, perhaps every other feeding with the pumpkin would be better if it proves to be a little too binding?

I wrapped him up and cuddled him earlier and he nuzzled my neck and purred and fell asleep for a little bit <3 I think I’m falling for this guy lol

Your little Cloud sounds so adorable by the way! How old is he now?

He is 4 months old in a couple of weeks! He is going to go be desexed soon so we don’t have any unexpected babies! In my avatar he is about 3.5 weeks old. His ears had just opened and he had a habit of rolling over to pee! So cute!

You can give him less pumpkin, he only needs about 2cc’s/mL every other feeding. He sounds healthy and adorable! I love that age when you are everything to them! When we just got Cloud at a week old he climbed up into my hair and just purred and fell asleep. It was cold and we were waiting in the car for my boyfriend to get some formula. They are so adorable! He sounds pretty good. Your vet may want to check him out just to make sure he is a good weight and size. My vet weighed Cloud for free. They need to make sure he is on a good track (:
