The Quiz Thread

  1. On the "Gone" thread, I had a quiz going to see who could find out where I got my yahoo screen name, freyatait. KapitiKats in NZ won the virtual blue ribbon for discovering that it was Yum Yum's name before Jim Qwilleran adopted her in Lilian Jackson Braun's "The Cat Who..." series. Buttercup won a red ribbon for identifying the source in which the answer could be found, "The Cat Who Ate Danish Modern," and 2bp won a white ribbon for her interest and participation.

KK asked that I come up with another puzzle. So, here's a simple riddle for a Friday that I expect will be solved before the end of the day. My second cat, a Meezer mix, was named Bobby by my brother. He named Bobby for one Robert Zimmerman. Robert Zimmerman is very well known by another name. This is a two-part question.

    1. By what name is Robert Zimmerman well known?
    2. How did he choose his well-known name?

  5. Okay, we have our winners for today! Paulajeanne and bellantara share the virtual blue ribbon for coming up with the correct answers to the two-part question.

Seven minutes! I'll try to come up with something more challenging for next week.

  7. For today's question, we will stay with Bob Dylan. His 1979 album, "Slow Train Coming", included a song called "Gotta Serve Somebody". Part of the lyric goes thusly:
"You can call me Terry or you can call me Timmy.
You can call me Bobby or you can call me Zimmy.
You can call me R.J., you can call me Ray..."
Now, we know from last week's question why we can call him "Bobby" or "Zimmy", but to what is Dylan alluding in that last line: "You can call me R.J., you can call me Ray"?

  8. Dang It! I'm slower than mollasses runnin' uphill in January!!

  9. Dylan was referring to Raymond J. Johnson, Jr., a character who was all over 1970's television. His one shtick began when the shill would call him "Johnson." The reply always began "You can call me Ray, or you can call me J." and would go on ad infinitium with different permutations of his full name, but would always end with the line "...but ya doesn't have to call me Johnson!"

  10. "...or you can call me Sonny, or you can call me Juney, or you can call me Ray J., or you can call me R.J., or you can call me R.J.J., or you can call me R.J.J. Jr."

I became familiar with this routine from an Ace Trucking Company skit in which Johnson was a mayor who was about to be interviewed by a reporter about his role in a scandal. By the time he was finished reciting his possible names, the time for the interview was over and he had managed to dodge questioning.

So Ginny in Cat Spring wins today's virtual blue ribbon!

  12. Okay, let's try another question about popular singers. The long-popular band, Chicago, has released records from the 1960s to the 2000s. The band, however, has not always been known by that name. What was the original name of the band Chicago? Hint: It isn't what you might think it is.

  13. Chicago Transit Authority???? if I remember correctly...boy that was a long time ago

    Posted 3 years ago by 2bpurring #

  14. 2bp, that was their second name; there was one they had before that. That's what I meant when I said it isn't what you might think it is.

  15. Dang..I don't remember a name before that...*bangs head on desk* think, think, think...arrrrrrgh

  18. You got it! 2bpurring wins the blue ribbon after 17 minutes!

Actually, I thought their original name was Chicago Transit Authority myself. I went to Napster (cat wearing headphones) to make sure I was right and discovered I wasn't.

  19. Okay, that was too fast. Let's try another one, again related to long-term popular singers.

How did Paul Simon and Art Garfunkle meet?

Posted 3 years ago by Leeny #

  20. They met in elementary school in 1953, when they both appeared in the school play Alice in Wonderland (Simon as the White Rabbit, Garfunkel as the Cheshire Cat).
