I’ve come across random horror stories about Hertz/Hartz (I forget how its spelt x,D; ) kitten milk replacer killing, paralyzing, and otherwise hurting kittens it’s fed to! D: And I’m SO worried D: I’ve got three 10 day olds I’ve been raising since birth (on said Hertz/Hartz replacer) and they’re my LIFE. If they get sick or die I’d literally die with them…:,D I’m already falling to pieces though they seem to be doing fine, growing well, etc., except for some on and off constipation but I heard that happens with all powder formulas? Anyways it was the only formula I could find at the time (I found these kittens on a sunday at 11pm, and not much is opn arnd here at that hr. I had to bike through a dust storm to go to a 24hrs walmart and that’s all they had. I wouldve much rather fed them Petag KMR Dx ) Anyways, my question is: Should I keep to their current formula in spite of the scary stories and bad reviews, or would it be better to switch them to another formula that I could find from Petco? (Hopfuelly Petag’s or smtng)? I’m not sure what to do! I need to get more formula on thurs. :,D And if I SHOULD switch formulas, which is best? I’ve used Petag’s before always, so that’s why I lean toward that one. But if there’s a better kind I could find at Petco, I’d certainly get that :,D

    Thanks for any help! <;w;>

If you want to switch, switch. The ingredients in most of the milks are the same. I’ve used Hartz before and actually since I was in a similar position ( pet store was sold out so had to go to walmart and that was what they carry) I’m actually using it now. Hartz pet products in general can be a bit sketchy. Also kittens die very often when abandoned by their mother because the mother’s sense something is wrong with those kittens. The people caring for them want a reason so they blame the milk. Not saying it couldn’t happen, just that I’ve never had any problems personally and even my vet is ok with it. If you want to and it would make you feel better, go and get a different formula. 🙂

Thank you for the reply! :,D I usually don’t believe horror stories, because you’re very right in saying ppl want to blame anything when something bad happens. But I’m such a worry wort when it come to kittens, ah ha x,D Hearing that you’ve used it with no issue and that even your vet says it’s fine puts my mind at ease, thank you C:

I checked the ingredients of Hartz back to back with KMR. The sugar content is much higher, and there is way less taurine which kittens need to survive. It’s ok in a pinch but definitely not long term. Too much sugar gives kittens diarrhea. While they do have similar ingredients they have different concentrations of them. Kittens need fat and protein and taurine. Hartz has less of each of those ingredients. I recommend mixing hartz with evaporated milk and nutri-kitten, especially if it is the only thing available.

Personally I would just switch to the KMR…. if you’re using the canned version the price difference isn’t that much anyways and I feel it’s a healthier choice for kitties.

@Chaos …omg D: Crappy replacer! They shouldn’t be selling it! 8/ So far my trio seem to be doing okay on it, no diarreah but constipation which is worsening I think…*sigh* I’ve tried oil and the triangle method but it didn’t work. <-m-; Thanks for the reply btw :,D What’s Nutri-kitten? o: And like how much do you think I should add of the evap milk and the other thing to a bottle? D: Now I wish I could’ve just bought some other kind of formula but it’s too late…x,D *spent all his monies on more Hartz, blaah.*

@Rachela Thanks for the reply c: I’m using the powder version as there’s no way I can afford the cans of any replacer at the rate three kittens would go through them. x,D; I wanted to buy the PetAg powder but I didn’t have the money when I went to pick up more formula, as it was double the price of hartz’s…<@@; I guess you get what you pay for…I just hope my trio will be okay ’til they can just get off it D: 2more weeks to go :,D

It may not be the best, but neither are pop and potato chips, yet they are consumed in great quantities by people. I wouldn’t worry too much, you are doing what you can and there are people here that will cheer you on and help while you raise the kittens. Good life to you and your furry crew.

I would use half hartz, half evaporated milk. Nutrikitten can be about 10 dollars. When you can, get some unflavored yogurt and egg yolks to add to the formula too. Here is what you can do:

Boil 6 cups of water, add whole can of evaporated milk. Get 4 egg yolks and mix in. Add 1/2 cup or 1 cup of hartz. Add cup of unflavored yogurt. Add 2 table spoons of nutri kitten. Mix together and pour into a storage jar. Place cap on top but do not screw it down until the milk has cooled down. This mixture gives kittens more fat and nutrients than just hartz. For 3 kittens adjust to 3/4ths. I used this for about 3 days on 4 kittens. Only make enough for about 3 days at a time. Keep refridgerated after it cools to room temperature. It is important to let it cool to room temperature outside the fridge, otherwise you may get bacteria growing inside of it (other than yogurt bacteria). This will keep your kittens plump and it should loosen their stools too. Kittens poop every other to every 2 days usually.
