  1. MM I am so sorry for your loss. I have been thinking of you and praying for you through this. I found a poem by Anne Bronte that will hopefully comfort you in this time of sorrow.

Farewell to thee! but not farewell
To all my fondest thoughts of thee:
    Within my heart they still shall dwell;
And they shall cheer and comfort me.
O, beautiful, and full of grace!
If thou hadst never met mine eye,
I had not dreamed a living face
Could fancied charms so far outvie.

If I may ne'er behold again
That form and face so dear to me,
Nor hear thy voice, still would I fain
    Preserve, for aye, their memory.

That voice, the magic of whose tone
Can wake an echo in my breast,
    Creating feelings that, alone,
Can make my tranced spirit blest.

That laughing eye, whose sunny beam
My memory would not cherish less; -
And oh, that smile! whose joyous gleam
    Nor mortal language can express.

Adieu, but let me cherish, still,
The hope with which I cannot part.
Contempt may wound, and coldness chill,
But still it lingers in my heart.

And who can tell but Heaven, at last,
May answer all my thousand prayers,
And bid the future pay the past
With joy for anguish, smiles for tears

  5. I am sorry for your loss MeezerMama but his passing was beautiful and peaceful. Allow yourself to grieve and let the tears flow. Do not be afraid to do it front of everyone even if they expect you to be "the strong one" in the family. Your GrandDad is watching over you now. Prayers, hugs and purrs.

  10. Thank you everyone. The memorial service will be held tomorrow. I came into work today to get a couple of things taken care of. Other than that, the family has been taking over my aunt's house. It's good for us all to be together.

  11. Absolutely MM.. it is essential that you all be together; remember all the good stuff about your GrandDad; sounds like there is a great deal of that.

  13. Someone gave me this poem when my Dad died. I'll pass it on to you now:

    Death is nothing at all

    Death is nothing at all.
I have only slipped away into the next room.
I am I and you are you,
whatever we were to each other, that we still are.
Call me by my old familiar name,
Speak to me in the easy way which you always used.
Put no difference in your tone,
wear no forced air of solemnity or sorrow,
    laugh as we always laughed
at the little jokes we enjoyed together.
Pray smile, think of me, pray for me.
Let my name be ever the household word
    that it always was.
Let it be spoken without effort,
without the trace of a shadow in it.
Life means all that it ever meant,
it is the same as it ever was.
    There is unbroken continuity,
why should I be out of mind
because I am out of sight?
    I am waiting for you
    somewhere very near
    just around the corner.
    All is well.

    Henry Scott Holland 1847-1918
    Canon of St Paul's Cathedral

I hope it helps, I'll be praying for you.

  14. When my Grandpa died, we spent some time remembering all the outrageous comments he would make deliberately to rile up my Grandma Josie, so that she would say in an outraged voice, "Oh, Herbert!" All it takes now is for one of us to repeat the whatever (too outrageous and non-PC for me to repeat here) and we'd collapse in laughter. 40 years later! So, MM, put some of those memories in too. Blessings on you all.

  18. Polly's Mum--thank you for such a lovely poem

  19. Thank you MeezerMamma for sharing your blog. I enjoyed the detailed account of how you and your family are dealing with your loss. I love hearing stories about the older generation in my family as you must when learning about your Grandfather and the POW's in his camp. I have heard there is actually a movie about someone who was like that - treated the prisoners with dignity but it might have been on the German side.

Many hugs and prayers to you as your prepare for the memorial tomorrow. From the sound of your family, I am sure it will be filled with laughter and tears. Hugs and purrs.

Your GrandDad sounds like he lived a wonderful life with all of you as his Pride and Joy.Please allow yourself tears and grief;only do not grieve his passing TOO hard; I do not think he would want you to.Smile for him! :) I truly believe he now desires you would cherish and hold fast to his spirit and love. Let's pray he's getting the $20 Grand-Tour of Heaven so he can show you ALL around/off! (Yes...out of the mouths of babes DO come pearls of wisdom!!)
