  1. Hello,

I am required to write a 6-8 essay on a controversial topic. I have already chosen my main topic to be animal abuse, however, animal abuse branches out in so many ways. I'm looking for any suggestions on what exact controversial topic I can use to write my paper on; perhaps some good websites maybe even someone I can get ahold of to interview for animal abuse.

I would be most thankful for many suggestions or information.

  2. Dragon you could probably go to the ASPCA website and get tons of info on abuse. They would more than likely be willing to give you and interview also for you essay as well.

You could pick a topic like dog fighting we all know how much that topic has been batted around lately.

  3. Might I suggest the controversial topic of boycotting the Summer Olympic Games in Beijing because of the horrible manner in which they are collecting up their strays and camping them where they die of hunger and thirst. A Kitty Holocaust! Just to clean up the streets so the people visiting for the games will believe they are good and decent.....

  4. Your right, that is a broad topic. Just some random ideas:
*How about animal abuse among shelters? It is wide spread, unfortunatley.
**Or even the newest one, animal abuse among the meat packing industry: Chickens, turkeys, pigs, cows & perhaps exotics.
***Zoos, is it animal cruelty or a real benefit to society, with happy animals?
****There are also the animal horders, those that think they are doing good by the animals, but in the end, the animals are all sick and malnourished.
*****Scape goat effect in family households? Holding animals hostage to keep a person quiet and under control.....

  5. try dog fighting or cock fighting. Both of which have people who strongly support the "sport" and the rest of us who think it is horrific and abuse. You also could do it on hoarding, there have been some new papers out on the psycology of hoarding. Chucks suggestion of the ASPCA is a great one, also look on the humane societies web pages too

  8. Dragon, I have seen several of the dogs that were rescued from Michael Vick's dog fighting compound. They were used as "bait" to make the other dogs fight. It was sickening, but some of them have found wonderful homes. I know that dog fighting and cockfighting are alive and well. There's a lot of cockfighting in Texas because it's so accepted in Mexico and so was brought here.

Cheri's suggestion would be intriguing. So many serial killers are known to have started their "career" as animal abusers. There's lots of information on that one, I know.

  9. Dragon, here is a twist you could write on rehabilitating animals that have been abused. Write about what was done to socialize the Vick dogs and make them able to be adopted out and what other organizations do for animals that have been rescued from abuse in order to bring them back to being healthy trusting companions for the people who later adopt them.

  10. One of the rescued dogs was on a Oprah show several weeks ago. I wish I could remember his name because it was just the best story when a wonderful family adopted him. At the Vick place the fighting dogs had literally chewed off half of this dog's face and ripped off his ear. He had to have all kinds of reconstructive surgery. The family that adopted him are just incredible. He is one lucky doggy and so loving. You would think, after going through all of that, that he would be afraid of anything and everything.
