Thank you all for keeping Ron and Dons family in your prayers..It was a tough weekend and the funeral will be Thursday..I guess even I didn't realize how far back the friendship went..It had been closer to 40 years..One good thing is it's bringing old friends back together..seen so many people he hasn't seen in 20-30 years..Thank you again for thoughts and prayers.

  16. 2b, prayers and condolences to Ron and his friend, Don's family. Whatever Don was suffering thru has now been finished and hopefully he will find peace on the other side. The tough part is the grieving that those left behind will be going thru and the 'what if's', it takes time to lessen the pain.

  18. I'm back asking for advise now..here's the thing..the funeral will be on Thursday and since it's at the veterns cemetary they only allow 3 flower arrangments..those have already been filled..So I asked his family if we could make a contribution in his name, they thought the idea was great but now I'm not sure to where..would it be more appropriate send it to some type of VA fund or a suicide prevention??? The family had no preference..

  19. 2bp - I have a thought, since Don was a veteran. There are Warrior Transition Units all over the U.S. that are transitioning wounded soldiers either back to active duty, or out to civilian life. These are soldiers who have been rather seriously wounded in Iraq or Afghanistan. The WTU's are in constant need of donations, but since they are located at military posts they are not allowed to seek donations.

Our West Point Parents' Club just made a donation to the WTU at West Point. They needed funds to send 30 soldiers to the opening Yankee's game. There is a catch though. Now, in order to make a donation, you must obtain permission from the Department of the Army. It was no problem to get permission, but it's sort of aggravating that you have to do that.

I could probably come up with some other suggestions. If you would like, please email me at ashaffer at swbell dot net. There is a Center for the Intripid Warrior in San Antonio at Brooke Army Medical Center. It is all privately funded and is a rehab for soldiers wounded in Iraq and Afghanistan.

  20. Hi 2b...This is a wonderful idea...I would suggest something connected to suicide prevention. Give Ron a hug for us and tell him to hang on to those sweetest memories as tightly as he can. What if's and why'nots are too haunting and don't help anyone. As forlorn as Don's life was to him...he'd never wish his friends or family to suffer as well.

  21. Thank you Karenopa..It's like you knew him too...I'm mostly worried about his girlfriend (it was a on/off relationship) I've been speaking with her several times a day..trying to convince her of just that..I think I'll borrow your wording, it sounds better and maybe will help more..she is coming to spend the night tonight so Thank You....

  26. 2b -- just saw this. You all are in my thoughts. My son just went through this with a man that was like a dad to him. In my mind, a better substitute dad than his dad was a real dad. No one will ever understand the why.... And if you can stay in touch with the girl friend left behind, she will need more support further down the road when many more realities set in.
