Little Sunshine got some not-so-good news

(17 posts)
  1. One of the kittens I picked up from the race track got bad news at the vet today. He is the long haired orange runt from the litter of 6 and my favorite. The vet took an X-ray and said he has a congenital birth defect, a mishaped sternum, that has left his chest cavity too small and cramped, which explains why he seemed to breathe harder than the rest of them(who are all healthy and well by the way). His heart has moved over to one side and she said there is nothing to be done for him except to keep him comfortable. She said to try to give him extra love and water down his food, try some vitamin paste for extra calories. She didn't say anything about putting him to sleep, or how long he might live,or if he was in pain, but she didn't seem very hopeful. He is the one my six year old favored, and I don't know how I'm going to break it to him. I have hope that he will surprise us all. Anyone have any inspiring stories or surprise survivals?

  2. Yvonne, I don't have any inspiring stories or surprise survivals. All I can do is offer my prayers that a miracle occurs for this little guy.

  4. We adopted a kitten from Animal Control and upon bringing him to the vet, found he had a congenital heart defect and would not live more than 2 years at most. My son who had chosen him cried the whole way home. When he turned 7, the vet sent him to get a heart scan done. They said his heart was so enlarged it was pressing on his other organs and it wouldn't be long now. He is about to turn 12 this summer. He lives outside due to his unapologetic spraying habit, chases squirrels, climbs trees and is often ripped to shreds from fights. His name is Lucky. :-)
(Yes, he is neutered and it was done when he was a kitten.)

  6. Wow CW...Lucky sounds like my still intact feral orangie out back. I'm trying to get antibiotics in him now because of yet another injury from fighting. This one is up under his right armpit. When sitting,he holds it up like it really hurts him. He's so beat up from fighting that he looks like he got hit by a car, more than once. You'd think he'd get tired of it. The last few mornings he actually let me pet his head. First ever. Maybe he'll let me trap him by this summer,if I'm still here. One can wish.

Yvonne...I hope your 'Little Sunshine' is as Lucky as CW's. I hate the thought of how your son is feeling over the news. {{{HUGS}}} to you both

  7. Yvonne...It sounds like the little one is a fighter and the best anyone could do is follow the vets instructions and pray for the best. God Bless, and the best of luck dear.

  8. Thank you so much, everyone. Thanks CW for your wonderful story, I hope that Sunshine will follow your lead! I don't know if not knowing would be better, but we will prepare for the worst and hope for the best.

  14. Positive thoughts for Sunshine's health. Sunshine may be an example of the bitter sweet facts about life that we are confronted with and are educated by, sad and upsetting though it may be.

  16. Positive thoughts for little Sunny. Remember that your family saved these kits from a cruel, unforgiving world and that no matter what their lives will be better for your love and generosity. That is a great gift to give indeed!
