  1. A while back I asked for suggestions on a contreversial topic based on animal abuse. The suggestions that I got were dog fighting, cock fighting, animal horders, animal abuse among the meat packing industry, animal abuse among the shelters, zoos, boycotting the summer olympic games in beijing and vick dogs.

Still, after reviewing all these great suggestions I came to realize that I would like to write my paper on domestic animal abuse. However, I am unsure as to whether or not it is in anyway a controversial topic or not. So I was wondering if anyone could support this claim, maybe even deliever it from a different angle so it becomes one.

If I had to pick one out of the ones suggested then I would like to do it on animal abuse often a trait in serial killers or animal hoarders, but I am unable to see how they are controversial.

Once again, if anyone has any further suggestions, feel free to comment. Thank you.

  2. well for starters your topic is too wide. If you look at what can be considered domestic animal abuse there are areas that can be seen as controversial, especially if you are looking at it from the view of a persons culture.

  3. Dragon6...I can only comment on what I myself have seen & read. The grizzly scenes that are come upon when one is found to be a hoarder of animals...well,I still don't understand how it becomes so out of control for some to the point they are in fact hurting the animals when they think they are helping them. Being a part of TNR programs & fostering litter after litter of kittens & cats for the past several years,I can only say that in the beginning before it becomes hoarding, that there must be a tremendous amount of pain for these people & somehow holding the animals close to them soothes that pain. I do know that there is a tremendous amount of seperation anxiety that I myself have experienced when finding new homes for the animals I've had, even knowing they are going to good homes. Some of that pain I've experienced has never left. I deep down inside try to tell myself that I'm the only one that can give them what they need. I probably haven't given you much insight, but, wanted you to know, that I believe that ALL hoarders in the beginning are doing it from the heart,& somehow they cross over the line of logical thinking & think they can handle them all. I wish you the best of luck on your paper.

  4. buster&harrysmomma,

I agree, it is a very wide subject. Do you know which part of domestic animal abuse would be considered as controversial?

    SusieinCa 3/8,

When talking about animal hoarding would you agree that the conttoversial question is if these people should be allowed to keep their animals or taken away? Also, should they be allowed to keep any animals at all? Or were you looking at this from a different angle?

    Thank you.

  5. I was thinking along the line of understanding how easily it can start. These people sometime in their lives are traumatized. They turn to animals for comfort & before they realize it,their love for them is actually putting the animals in danger. When you hear of some that accumulate upwards of 100 or more animals has no doubt got psychologic problems & most I would say, should not get the animals back.
I thought it was massive & out of control when I had up to 24 animals I had rescued, was caring for,& some I ended up keeping because they became too old for adoption. I'm just a lightweight with that number. But I've loved everyone of them that have crossed my path. I owe such a debt of gratitude to my TDK family for their help in finding new homes for some of them. It was a heavy burden on me with just 24. I couldn't imagine having 100 or more.
I guess in a way you could say I'm seeing it from the hoarder's point of view, from the beginning of the madness.
Some of these people don't realize until it's too late that they are abusing these beautiful creatures by trying to 'Save them All'

  6. SusieinCa 3/8,

Thank you for your advice and suggestions.

  7. That was well said Susie..I agree that animal hoarders do have some traumatic reason which leads them to do this. When the conditions are out of control and have been discovered, often times we persecute and prosecute these people wherein perhaps we should be looking more to getting them the help they so desperately need psychologically. It may even prevent them from starting all over again. I am not by any means talking about puppy mills...there's no hope for those people and they should never be allowed near animals ever again.

  8. I'm sorry dragon62..I didn't mean to not address you here...There would be some level of controversy in the treatment and penalties charged for hoarders. Many would have a 0 tolerance level for any amount of abuse brought about thru hoarding. Still the mental condition of many people who find themselves unchecked in their accumulation of pets are in need of counseling which does and can have a direct affect on our society. Don't you think?

  9. Karenopa,

Don't worry about it. Hearing peoples opinion helps alot in the long run. ^_^ And yes, I do agree with you. It really makes you think about it.

  10. im doing a paper on domestic animal neglect in mexico and i can hardly find anything! its buggin me. does anyone have any insight??

    Posted 2 years ago by kbabe1890 #

  11. Hi, KBabe, I'm assuming you're in Mexico, right? I suggest you ring your local shelter or refuge and arrange a visit and a chat to the workers. I think you'll end up with more material than you could ever use.

If you're not in Mexico, then that sounds tough -- for one thing, most of the written material would be in Spanish. Can you change it to something closer to home?

  12. Dragon620026,

There is a very easy way to narrow your topic and wade "hip-deep" to "in over your head" in controversy writing about domestic animal abuse. It is so fraught with emotion and high temper that we are not allowed to discuss the topic on TDK. The topic is elective surgical modification of pets for the convenience of the owner. Specifically this covers de-barking dogs and de-clawing cats and other changes without benefit to the animal so altered.
