The abandoned Athens cats

(7 posts)
  1. Hi, TDKers. It took me awhile to find my way to the right spot, but here I am with an update on the Athens cats. When I went to the shelter yesterday to deliver the treats, I was invited to visit with the sociable cats in the playroom and give them treats in person. Six cats were there: four were black-and-white tuxedo cats with little white mustaches who were probably littermates, one was solid black and looked like a miniature panther, and one was the little tortie with whom I'm trying not to fall in love. They'd just had a meal, so they didn't go into a "feeding frenzy" when I entered, but they were definitely interested. I sat on the floor and placed the treats in a variety of spots to make sure that everyone got some of them. I spoke quietly to them about the wonderful new homes they are going to have and the humans who will take good care of them. After eating the treats, they drank some water, washed up, and settled down for a rest. Other than their painful thinness, I noticed two other signs of their ordeal: No one purred, and everyone carried his/her tail down low. The volunteer told me that soon they'd be carrying their tails like flagpoles! The Athens Humane Society starts accepting adoption applications today.

  3. I'm glad they were saved, too. It took a heartless person to hurt them, but there are many people with HUGE hearts who will help them. I would take the solid black cat if I had my own house. Unfortunately, I live in an apartment and the limit is 2 animals.
I appreciate the update as well.

  4. I also live in a rental unit and also have a limit of 2 indoor cats, and there's not an "opening" available right now. That's why I haven't put my name on the tortie.

  6. Eileen - you are so kind to visit the poor homeless, abused kitties. Maybe you can only have 2 at home but sharing your love at the shelter will help countless cats have happier lives. Your caring and sharing time with them will also help them socialize better when potential adopters come in to see them. Thank you for the updates and hope all the babes get good loving homes in the near future. Is the Athens Humane Society a no-kill shelter? It does sound like they are doing a wonderful job caring for these poor kits.

  7. There is a project underway to create a no-kill shelter in Athens, in which the animals will live in more homelike environments rather than in kennels. It will also be centralized and in a convenient place for people who want to adopt animals. Presently the Humane Society deals with cats and other small animals (mainly rabbits) and Animal Control is in charge of dogs; the HS shelter is on a country road and I don't even know where dogs are kept for adoption. People are pledging monthly donations to establish and run the new comprehensive shelter. Presently, I think something like 6% of adoptable cats are euthanized. I think the percentage for dogs is higher.
