not trying to be salacious...I post disturbing items and I post uplifting items...this pertains to animal welfare, which is a passion for many of us...we can contact the Klawock police department and Ketchikan Animal Protection concerning this case...I find it disturbing that there is no law in Alaska prohibiting sex with a canine...this was not posted for "shock value"

I back you Dee..100%..Many people here, under the guise of stating personal problems and dilemas create just as much discomfort for me in their exposure of personal, non-fluffy situations between spouses, bf's, bosses, and clients. Things that frankly can sometimes bore and annoy me. However I listen, I contemplate and I try to respond with caring and intelligence because I basically care for others happiness. This IS an animal site....Animal abuse whether it's through beating, starving or sex..is ANIMAL ABUSE. If others aren't interested in what's really going on in the world, they just don't have to respond at all by making no comment. This goes on in reporting of all kinds, every day in ever facit of media. Come on people!
-
I don't know what I missed..but I am interested in doing what I can for animal welfare..If this was a story that was deemed to unfluffy for the site, well, it's not my site, so not my choice..but Dee could you please email me a link to this story? at 2bpurring at gmail dot com

As a former newswoman Karen, I can't tell you how much I respect and appreciate what you just posted. I guess the nature of the story was disturbing...but what animal abuse story is not? I am disturbed by these news stories every day...and I am grateful for that. It forces me to act upon them. The day that we all grow apathetic and don't want to realize that not everyone treats animals in a loving and respectful manner will be a very sad day for animals.

I'd like to see the article, too, Dee. We can choose our causes but we can't close our eyes.

Me also, Dee-- If things are to change, activism is necessary. Please send me the link.

You are always finding the best articles for us, Dee--please continue. Thank you for caring!

I saw the article, Dee. A very disturbed individual indeed, and yes, we should write that province into changing their laws.

I don't argue for a moment that Dee's story was one worthy of attention, and that the issue addressed in it was one that many here would find of interest. But I will delete posts featuring content that people find offensive, simply because those are my rules: be polite, don't post content others might find offensive.
You might think of this as censorship, I just prefer to think of it as a code of behaviour - I'm not suggesting for a moment that such stories should not be be posted elsewhere.

Is it permissable to have a separate section of posts set up for this type of story? That way people will know not to open them if they don't wish to view anything like this.

No, the last thing I want to do is actually encourage unfluffy postings ;-)

Thank you for your explanation KittenMaster. In light of considering the term 'unfluffy'..I'm afraid ALL animal abuse and ALL articles concerning animal safety will lead to unfluffy comments being posted. Due to this magnificent site and all the beautiful members, today I am more involved in animal cruelty and the promotion of animal wellbeing than at any other time of my life. These newly adopted changes for me run deep and true and are soooooo fullfilling to my wellbeing as a human being. The stories and articles on TDK concerning animals (however unattractive) are making me a better, more involved person. I found this mornings censorship disappointing.

Dee has accommodated the more "sensitive" readers by posting a link to the story with warnings for content. She has never posted to shock or create controversy, but instead to raise awareness of animal cruelty and provoke some readers to action. A website devoted to the fluffly innocence of kittens needs also to advocate in their behalf. We need to occassionally step outside of our comfort zone and respect and trust the intent of one of TDK's "long-time members." In my humble option, Dee's personal code of behavior "trumps" the TDK code of behavior. I find some of the mundane drivel posted on this site offensive and insulting, but I don't click the REPORT link. I move to another story. Look how this website has evolved in a large part due to it's regular posters. Maybe some of us DO need to find another site because we don't want to part of the dumbing down or de-evolution of the TDK. Hey, maybe we need a TDK-M (rated M for Mature)! Just kidding KM, but some of us love kittens and are adult and mature enough to realize that the article is NOT offensive, rather it is the actions of a person outside the TDK that are offensive!

I didn't see what was deleted but maybe this doesn't have to be an all or nothing thing. Maybe for those types of postings a generic sort of title to an ASPCA site or something. I know some of the titles re animal abuse have been pretty graphic in the past and I found them disturbing. Just perhaps some moderation, that's all.
I am an activist re abuse of any kind but I do come to this site to chat w/ my friends, pray for those who need it but it's also a sanctuary as I see it from the rest of the web. That is just my take on this. -
KM said "You might think of this as censorship, I just prefer to think of it as a code of behaviour - I'm not suggesting for a moment that such stories should not be be posted elsewhere."
What's in a name? that which we call a rose
By any other name would smell as sweet; And it still has THORNS.
We will always prick each other. We are a community. I think it is the uneven hand that disturbs. It is ok to post of furniture sexual abuse but not bestiality. But even that has passed un-altered here.
I am not saying that all speech here is sacrosanct and we should always remember children are attracted it is KITTENS.
All we can do is post and if it vanishes....

Well said, Karen & CatRancher! I, for one, was glad when the chat room was created with the different sections--I was bored by the "virtual cafe" and found it annoying to have to scroll through the nonsense to see other posts. For those that enjoy this I am happy you have your forum. The fact that the "picnic table abuse" was allowed to post while Dee's was not, IMHO, is wrong. We need to get people angry enough to do something about animal abuse where there are not adequate laws in place.

My understanding about the unfluffiness policy is that we are not to be nasty to each other in our posts: no name calling, dirty language, sarcasm, hostility, etc. That's pretty clear. The content issue, however, is less clear to me. How can someone know, ahead of time, what one out of several hundred people who read a post may find offensive?
The Catster site states that anything posted there must be appropriate for a 7-year-old child to read. Kittenmaster, do you have a similar standard for fluffiness?
-
and does it have to apply to the content of the links as well? I ask, even tho I am not sure I want to hear the answer. "Freedom is just another word for nothing else to lose."

Sheba's mum & Catrancher: I can't read all of the posts, so I rely on all of you reporting posts whose content you might find inappropriate. If no-one complains, I can only assume that no-one finds the posts offensive. If one person complains, I'll take a look, and most of the time I'll ignore the complaint, simply because one complaint doesn't suggest any kind groundswell of support. If several people complain (which happened this time round), I'll feel inclined to delete simply because it suggests that a fair number of people feel the same way.
It's not personal, and I really don't like deleting posts - all I ask is that you consider what you're posting before you do so. If you doubt whether your post makes TDK a better place, then perhaps it's best to leave it out.
I really like the job Dee does in posting news stories, but today's obviously struck a nerve - and it became apparent very quickly that here was a story featuring details that a number of you found genuinely disturbing. I might not agree personally - in fact I might disagree entirely - but I will delete in such cases. Apologies if anyone finds this offensive.

I for one think that KM does a good job of overseeing this site. I have had a reply deleted--while I didn't think it was offensive or a personal attack on anyone, I respect that all things are not taken in the way intended and I support KM's decision to do so. My suggestion would be a list of e-mail addresses similar to the Christmas card list, that members can sign up for. If anyone runs across an item such as this and feels that it is timely, it can be distibuted to only those members on the list. I did not see the post, nor do I need to; as a matter of fact, I skip a lot of the posts regarding abuse because they disturb me greatly. I do not have my head in the sand, it's just that most of the time I can't do anything about it and prefer to use my emotional and financial resources more locally.
-
Let me get this straight then. Since I am a minority here (being male) if I find something offensive such as - gee, I don't know - talks about vibrators, how stupid men are, and various other things that I have seen posted then the response I will get it "tough" because I am not a 'groundswell of support'.
But, if someone finds a legitimate news article disturbing then it will be taken down to avoid unsettling their sensibilities. So do we now have to have a button to show support for an article then since the only voices you hear from are those who gripe?
I would say that if someone is being a troll then fine, deal with them. But if legitimate discussion and dissent occur then why not let everyone argue it out and settle the issue. We are adults here and don't need protection from ourselves.
If someone doesn't want to read a disturbing news article I don't think that anyone is going to force them to click on the link

This is getting a little out of hand. I'm fairly new to posting on TDK, though I've been watching the kittens for a while. The fact is - its Kittenmaster's website and he's just doing what he thinks is best. Not every post is going to appeal to everyone. What we all need to remember is that this is primarily a site to see great kittens, talk about our furr-babies and maybe make friends with someone with similar interests. I, personally, don't want to read about animal abuse or other disturbing stories - there's all kinds of places that I can find that kind of information, but if I find a posting that doesnt appeal to me, I don't read it. Its that simple. I don't think any of us are ignorant to the worst that can happen in this world - but by definition - isn't this website more for smile purposes than otherwise? That doesn't mean that some won't be interested in the more varied postings, but as people with some common sense, we can choose not to read those. And we certainly shouldn't be chewing (pun not intended) out KM for doing what he thinks best.

Hi Siobhan! It's nice here in north Jersey too and I'm glad the midwest is looking good too. My niece has been here visiting and is heading home to Wisconsin this morning - looks like clear sailing. She seriously considered sending for her kitty "Simba" and staying with Grandma, which would have been great!
