I think Shelly has a great suggestion of a separate email loop for news that is unfluffy and needs action taken or is meant to open one's eyes to something. I personally receive the Humane Society's news alerts and encourage everyone to get on that list to stay informed. Because of this, I know about things like the clubbing of seals and have signed petitions. However...I fully support KM in his firm rule that this be kept a fluffy and light-hearted place where one can escape the rest of the internet and it's ugliness. For instance, I also subscribe to Cute Overload. When I see that I have received my morning CO email, my heart lifts a little before I read it because I anticipate what it contains. If one morning I opened it to find an article on some type of horrific abuse situation, that would not fit the website and it's intentions and I would feel that it was not the place. This isn't the only site on the web that is animal related; you can sign up in hundreds of places to find out about animal abuse. There is no reason to insist that KM, who specifically set this site up as the Fluffiest Place on the Internet, change the parameters of what he allows on his own site. Just as some of us are now on a separate email loop for TDK weight loss and another site for a TDK book club, maybe this can also be handled the same way for those who are interested.
Just a gentle suggestion. :-)

Hi CW - I was wondering the same thing about the wall - thought maybe it was my computer. Hi Shelley - hang on to your hat and enjoy the day!

CW, it was driving me crazy about where your comment was! But I could not agree with you more, and you have made the point beautifully. Thank you!
KM has every right to establish rules for this site and how fortunate are we that TDK exists? Like CW, I receive news from numerous animal sites. And, I read the current state, national and world news on the internet several times a day (because our newspaper is awful). So I don't really need for someone to "direct" me to a news site.
I work very closely with many military organizations and so am exposed to "bad" news constantly. I don't want, or need, to come to TDK for that. TDK fills a whole other need in my life.
How sad that TDK, and the various parts of it, would be called "nonsense"; "mundane drivel" or "dumbing down". Of course we all know that the roller rink doesn't exist; no kitty has a birthday party with all the TDK kitties in attendance and no, the food in the cafe isn't real. But what all of that represents to me is a way to actually get to know the other members. Lots of personality comes out in those postings and threads.
So much of TDK is fantasy, and frankly in today's world, it is a wonderful outlet to "go" somewhere that is friendly, happier and certainly more loving.
KM, I hope that it's okay to have made these comments. I so appreciate what you do, and I truly value the friendships that I have made here on TDK. It has made my little world a happier place.

I am sorry for anything that I might have said or done that someone might consider "nonsense"; "mundane drivel" or "dumbing down". While I look at the cafe and roller rink as a means to use my much unused imagination, I am aware that they are not real.
Again, I apologize for using this medium as a way to improve my imagination.

well I never saw the offending post. I'm sorry to hear that the post and censorship of it got so many people so upset.
Dee, have you ever considered a blog that is your own? I, for one, would very much enjoy a site devoted to the news stories that you find. I consider you a great source of news that is of interest to me.
Being Kittenmaster's site, I respect how he chooses to run it even when I disagree.Posted 3 years ago by MeezerMama in OK; 10/23 #

Amen, Terri. Although I don't think that I will apologize. And I know that I have contributed to the "nonsense" in spades! But I personally don't want to live in a world where there is no creative use of imagination or fantasy. I think that we all need that, in a world that oozes bad news.
I love reading the "nonsense". And it is so much fun to respond - I have even been printing out some of it and sending it to my 99 year old mother-in-law so that she will have something to make her smile and laugh.
{{{{Hugs}}}}}, Terri. You just keep on using that imagination. And so will I!

I love the creativity and imagination displayed on the TDK roller rink thread. I look forward to checking it each day. I didn't see the link that KM removed. There is room for the serious as well as the light and ridiculous here, but we are all here as KM's guests. This is a his website, not a democracy. He gets to decide what stays up on a topic and what is removed. I am grateful to KM for giving us this space to laugh, cry, play, grieve and care for one another. I am grateful to Dee for her interesting and important news links.

I agree with you KW..It would appear the only real problem comes from those who choose to report articles that Dee always gives fair warning to explicit graphics or topic content. They have no business clicking on that topic to examine what they already suspect they may find offensive. KM isn't the censor here...He does a wonderful job of keeping the peace between such diverse children as we can be. It's people within our membership who are the true censors. I for one will find this site sadly flat without Dee's contributions. I hope she sticks with us..

KW, I completely agree with you. My real world has been upsetting and stressful, and I pick and choose which threads to read and either lurk or join in. I am thankful to be a guest of KM and his endless supply of kittens. I'm off to persuade Shaddo to go to the roller rink & maybe stop by the cafe to see if there's any leftover fruit or something.

Just as in watching TV, you are not forced to look at something you don't want to--just change the channel.
I am sorry if some of you took offense to comments about "nonsense", but I did say I was pleased that you have the forum if you want it as I am to not partake--we again have the choice to participate or ignore.
I sincerely appreciate what KM is doing for us--it is and always will be my favorite site.
Instinct, your comments are always thought-provoking and please continue to post.
I do hope Dee, that you continue to provide us with information and humor.

Thresholds of tolerance vary.
I prefer to reserve the right to be offended but I am not your nanny. If I go to clearly marked dangerous ground, it is my choice. It should be yours.
I do not choose to report, "Oh! Mighty KM, I was offended by X so please delete it so that others may not be offended." Mrs Grundy should be shot on sight. She wants laws to keep you from doing what she deems bad for you not to protect herself from her own bad choices.
If we become personally locked in battle and too nearsighted to stop, NO ISSUES.
KM doesn't want to start a designated HISS Topic for sensitive material but I would encourage him to reconsider. He would still have the option of deleting what he found too controversial to leave open to our own choices based on the adjudication that there are too many disturbed from the fluff by the intrusion of real life.
What if a group of readers decides our personal trials are not fluffy enough and complain in numbers? The line in the sand can get too close for comfort and in this case I believe it did.
As I said before, all we can do is post and if it vanishes....

Leemy, I, too, am a bit saddened to think that when each of us needed support, there were members of the TDK that thought our trials/tribulations were boring and annoying. Please feel free at ANYTIME, to contact me if you need a quick hug or reassurance or you just need someone to vent to.

Sometimes, I feel the need for silliness, and I check out the relevant threads.
Sometimes I just want a {{hug}} or some words of support, so I start a thread.
Sometimes I want to {{hug}} another TDKer, so they know they're not alone.
And sometimes I just lurk.
TDK is many things, to many people, all at once. No-one should be discouraged from posting - as usual, this sort of topic can bring out the "worst" in some family members, and things can be said & misinterpreted in the heat of the moment. Let's all just continue to read, post, laugh, cry and SHARE - and if the odd thing gets deleted, well so what? Worse things happen at sea...

I do believe I've witnessed most members here from time to time posting genuine concerns and prayers for anyone who posts personal problems and are asking for help. I for one try not to exclude anyone from my prayers and encouragement. Those missed were never intentional....we all have our days and don't have time for every single item. I REALLY depend on all of our members, not just Dee, though she has been the shining star, in keeping me abreast of what's going on in the world of pets as well as sharing many much needed giggles. Who is anyone of us to dictate what others are enjoying or addressing if it be our choice? Narrowmindedness is not a virtue..I see this petty...'I Just Don't Want It Here' attitude as lacking in virtue. I'm sorry please understand..one position allows all...the other position allows some...

I for one don't recall any names being attached to any so-called boring or annoying topics. Why is this subject once again becoming unfluffy with fingerpointing? When you duplicate wording from other posters into your own comments,I feel no matter who it is,your attacking them.
Why don't we all just let it go???
-
I see that some of you believe that you have seen yourselves or a particular thread as being singled out in my comment above. This is not the case. Please do not take my words out of context and then attempt to attach your own interpretation.
By all means, put your kitties on rollerskates and put them into the rink with all your imagination and creativity in tow. I enthusiastically support your right to post anything and everything you desire.
I can choose to read or comment, and that is my point -- my ONLY point. I have never thought to REPORT anything but a TROLL comment or two.
I do not think it is fair to censure an article meant to inform, especially where it concerns animal abuse. AND, I know that Dee's intent to inform was pure of heart. To censure her can be taken as a rebuke and that pisses me off royally. I think it was a mistake and one that may result in no more articles from Dee.
As many have said before me, just let it go, because to continue this thread is just roiling up more trouble where none was intended to be.

CatRancher - all your points are valid, but I have to make judgement calls from time to time, and when I do (bear in mind that I've deleted about half a dozen posts out of the many tens of thousands) I'm always going to annoy somebody, whatever I choose to do - whether it's those who don't think I shouldn't delete the item, and those that do.
I don't doubt Dee's motives are anything but pure, and I'm really grateful for the huge contribution she makes to this community. I've e-mailed her offlist to explain my point of view, probably not very articulately, and I truly hope she accepts my reasoning. Given the amount of fuss this has created, it was probably a mistake to delete the thread, but hey, you live an learn.
I'm now going to close this thread as a few of you have suggested, firstly because I don't think there's much I can do to convince a lot of people I've done the right thing, which I can live with, but mainly because I reckon we could all do with moving on.
Keep it fluffy.
KM.
