My oldest cat has tested positive for FIP the dry form. Several of the other cats have been losing weight also. I tried increasing the amount of moist food that I feed them but it just decreased the amount of dry that they eat. The cats are eating but losing weight. Any advice on how to deal with this would be appreciated.

I'm so sorry to hear about you cat's diagnosis. I found this definition which seems to have alot of information pertaining to this problem. It speaks specifically to FIP dry form near the end of the article. Good luck SM..hugs and purrs to your kitty!

Yes Karenopa I did re-click the link. Yes this is very frightening with 5 cats in the house and at least 3 losing weight it looks to be a very sad time.

I will talk more with the Vet tomorrow as it is the Dogs turn to go for their annual check-up. What I like about this vet is that he is very honest and does not try to sugar coat the facts. He told me there is no cure but only symptomatic treatments. All I can to is love my cats and make sure that they do not suffer.

Stubbys Momma, I'm so sorry. FIP is one of the truly nasty diseases remaining, with nothing but empirical treatment once contracted. I'm glad your vet is being honest with you. Do everything you can to keep your kitties comfortable, as long as you can.
My heart goes out to you.

From what I have learned, I may have up to one year with the sickest of the cats, Cupid, but probably less. I have 2 that have gained weight where the other 3 have lost weight, so those 2 may live long healthy lives as carriers. Really the test for FIP is quite expensive so we are just assuming that they all have it in one form or another. I try to spend some quality time with each of the cats everyday to make sure that they know that they are loved. The vet also suggested feeding them high protein foods to help increase their appetite, so since they all like cheese they get a little pile of it every evening.

Oh Stubby's Momma...I'm so sorry..This is very sad..but you know it's something where you can actually ensure quality love and care, knowing their days may be shortened. I know we always give our babies love but if you know for a fact you're losing them It's a blessing to give them all you can and not be sorry later like some of us are when we lose our babies suddenly. Then think..I wish I had.............taken a little more snuggle time, etc. God Bless you sweetie. My thoughts and prayers are with you...{{{hugs}}}

Thanks Susie, I just had to come to terms with it and accept it the best that I can. Also I know that after the last one passes I will have to wait for a while before I can bring any more into the house.

I had one who contracted FIP many years ago. She escaped the house and was out around two days. The vet told me that she most likely tangled with a stray who had it.
She held on for a very long time, but in the end, she went over the Rainbow Bridge in a very weakened condition. The hardest part after that, was when the vet told me I could not have another cat for SIX months! Apparently that is how long it takes for the disease to burn itself out.
I am so sorry for your distress.

Stubby's Momma, I'm sorry for the diagnosis. Anything you can do to keep their appetites up will help them live comfortably. It's wretched to watch one's pet deteriorate, knowing what the final outcome can be. I know you'll cherish the time you have remaining with the afflicted kitties. (Perhaps at some far future date you can have the two remaining kitties tested.)

Stubby's Momma, so sorry to hear the diagnosis. The good thing is that they are lucky and you too, in knowing that the house is filled with love and caring for each and every one of them. You are a great kittymom and the love will be returned to you tenfold. Hugs and headbonks from this whole crew >^..^<
