  1. On Tuesday, I was hit with yet another virus, flu, cold, whatever. I wasn't able to sleep Tuesday night because my throat was swollen and I kept waking up gasping for air because I would turn a certain way and I couldn't breathe. I finally had to sleep sitting up.

So, I missed school on Wednesday. My math professor has told us that if we miss more than 3 days, we will be dropped from the class. Two tardies count as one absence. I have missed three days and, I think, I was only late once. I emailed him at 6:00am that morning to let him know I was sick and to ask for him to email me the homework so I wouldn't get behind. So far he has not emailed me back. I have checked online and the class still shows up on my schedule but I am worried.

I am so sick of being sick and I am really upset at the thought that all my hard work could be taken away by some ******* cold or flu bug. It just isn't fair.

  2. Would it help to have a physician document your illness?

  3. It would if I had health insurance. As it is, I don't have the money for a doctor.

  4. Does the college have student health services?

  5. Yes, and the nurse would have been there Wednesday but there was no way I was going down there the way I was feeling. I think the nurse is there tomorrow too but, by then, I will probably be well so I still won't be able to get any kind of written excuse for missing classes.

  6. You worry me Owlwatcher..It seems like you just got over some bug! Do you still own your tonsils? If so..maybe it's time to get them yanked! I feel for you, not being able to afford a doctor. I'm the same way..no insurance...no doctor. I pretty much stick to home remedies, vitamins and prayers! I'll say a little pray that you start feeling better and can get caught up with school. It sure is different when our moms' aren't here to do that thing they do!

  7. If you cannot get satisfaction from the instructor go to the dean of the college.
It wasn't exactly the same thing but I had an instructor who was going to lock out the tardy's. I had an entire campus to cross in 5 minutes and the clocks were not synchronized from one building to the next. My dad borrowed a stop-watch from the best instrument repair shop in town and followed me and a classmate from bell and mad dash to into the door marking the time on the clock from each building. Time @ building A leaving to time at building B arriving = x minutes. Stopwatch = y minutes.
Dad paying $$$ for class wins.
Instuctor always sniffed and huffed significantly when I arrived in class from that date on. I don't think she liked being called on carpet for juvenile restrictions.
You are paying for your classes, you should be the one to call a drop. On your side you also have evidence of a history of illness.

  8. You've got a good point, ailuromaniac. Owlwatcher, if you get dropped from the class, can you demand a refund?

  9. Maybe it would help if when you do email your instructor that you cc: the admin office. Hopefully this teacher is smart enough to realize that you truely are ill and would only risk getting the whole class ill if you showed up in person...I believe many of those rules are written for those who are just in college to party, not for those who truely want an education.
