  1. What would you do if you had a permanent job where the company was kind of dysfunctional but doable, where the benefits were decent and where you didn't have a lot of stress but not much opportunity to go anywhere jobwise and then all of sudden you are offered a three month assignment at a company that you have been wanting for a long time where they have excellent wages, benefits, systems, a cafe over in the other building and opportunities. The temp assignment is offering you a $6.54/hr increase over the permanent wage. The hiring manager mentioned that in 3-4 months she will be conducting a permanent search. So, do you take a risk and take the temp position or do you stay at the permanent position?

  2. take the risk!

  3. personally with the economy in a downswing(in my opinion),I would hang on to the permanent job. It's not that easy to find perm postions and the temporary job would be nice for however long it is but it will end and you would be in worse shape b/c you quit the permanent job.IMHO

  4. Wow thats a tough one...$6.54 per hr increase?? wow thats alot..you might want to take a few thing into consideration, like... Is this hiring manager the same one who offered you the temp job? did she mention how many people are in the running? What is the job market like in your area, just incase you don't get offered the perment job? personally..I think I would take the chance, that is a great opportunity, and it sounds like with your enthusiasum (sp?) for the job, you will probably WOW them!!! Keep us posted.

  5. Unless she can guarantee you that you'll be the person they hire even though they have to search, I'd stay where I was. Even at $6.54 more it's only for 3 months, and if you don't get in at the end of the 3 months where would you be?

  6. That is what I was thinking HM.

  7. In addition to the job market you have to consider your marketability. I am pushing 60, risk is not a good thing especially in a down market. If I were 20 something then the risk might be acceptable.

I have to say you are on your own on this one.

You can always apply when they offer the permanent position.

  8. I know what you mean, ailuromaniac. I had an uncle who had been the controller for a large company when they laid him off and he was 50 yrs of age. He had a Bachelors Degree in Finance and it took him a year to find a new job.

  9. I'm in customer service. I've never been without work more than a few months. And that's because I waited for the exact job I wanted and my work is always in demand. Is what you do in great demand? Have you established a rapport with the hiring mgr for the next permanent job or will your old job let you return if you aren't hired on with the temp position?

  10. No and no. Leave perm job burns bridge. Temp job is through agency, hiring manager is new to company so no networking until you get there.

  11. How wasily could you find suitable temp work again if the temp to perm thing didn't pan out? I'm tempted to say take the risk, but mindful of financial obligations...

  12. If they could promise you that the new job would be Temp-to-Perm unless they found your work completely unacceptable, then I would go for it. Otherwise, I would be leery.

I wonder if you could take a leave from the current job and try the new one? The current employee might not like that idea though.

  13. Could call in sick for two days and try out the position. Temp opportunities are out there but it the problem of landing the temp position. There is also considering the stress level. Only temp positionfor now until after the Board of Directors meeting on June 4th. Then afterwards, hiring manager will conduct permanent search.

  15. This is definitely scarey...I don't think I'm qualified to advise you here but I sure do wish you the best. I can say a prayer for you.

  16. Play sick? How can I put this delicately.

    Not NO...HE-DOUBLE HOCKEY STICKS NO!

Imagine meeting your current boss at lunch?

  17. Seems like the nays have it.

  18. If you want the job then go for it. You gain nothing without some kind of risk.

But, if you are going to do it, then DO IT! Leave the job your at and go at the temp one full on.

  19. ahhh...the Yoda philosophy! "do or not do" ;)

btw, "no" was for taking sick days to try out new job.

  20. If you really want it, take the risk. No gains are made without risk.

  21. One last thing. Current job is dept assistant to director, director's direct reports and the rest of the department for a total of about 35 people , temp job is Sr. Executive Assistant to Vice President of a department at a very large firm and only working for the VP.

  22. There's something in the way you keep posting extra positive info about this job karin...I can tell you're sorely tempted...does it FEEL like the right thing? Sometimes you can only go by your gut and take a leap of faith...

Posted 1 year ago by MadcatwomanintheUK #

  23. This is a tough one.... just listen to your heart and mind as only you have all the information on yourself, job security in the area, etc. I am with Karen, I wish you well and will add my prayers.

  24. This is not a choice we can make for you SMM.
All we can do is point out some items to put on your consideration list and tell you to move forward honestly.
Either take the risk or not. BUT do not make tentative passes that jeopardize your integrity such as lying to take time to test the waters. You might as well embellish your resume.

  25. Pros: career boost, huge wage increase, opportunities within company once in the door, once permanent comes with great benefits, better systems, working one on one with VP versus working for a dept of 35 people,

Cons: commute will take longer even same distance, risk of being unemployed after 3 mos assignment ends, no benefits during 3 mos, have to re-learn systems, no good restaurants in area but shopping center about 15 mins away, etc.

I am very tempted by three things: Career boost, huge wage increase and working for only one person. My current job doesn't have any of this and at times I find that I wish to find a different job because my current boss manages his own calendar and travel and barely utilizes me. I do realize that it is very risky to take a temp job in these uncertain times. I am thinking it might be best to say no to this position and try for a permanent job in late 2009 when things might stablize by then. It is hard decision for me.

Thank you for all your input and appreciate your taking the time to post them here.

  26. I'd say don't do it--with the economy the way it is right now, there's no telling what will happen in three months. No benefits at new/temporary job for 3 months? When you add in the costs of the benefits you have now, is it still more money than paying out of pocket for a medical emergency? Why not stay at current job and then tell other VP to interview you at the end of the 3 months?

Posted 1 year ago by FondaHonda #

  27. I wonder how it would look to the VP if I was to contact her directly and let her know that even though I would like to take this position, I cannot take the risk of not having a job in three months but that I would like to be considered when she is hiring for a permanent position.

Posted 1 year ago by SylvesterMiasMomma #

  28. Tell the temp service that you can't quit a permanent full time job with benefits for a 3 month assignment, but that if they could guarantee temp to perm, you would consider it.

    Posted 1 year ago by KYKAT 12 23 #

  29. Okay, just spoke with the temp agency and they said they have seen some of their temps go perm within 3-4 weeks at this company. Now, I have heard this kind of talk before when I was a temp. I worked at a temp assignment where the position was suppose to be a temp to perm position. After being there two months, I asked how I was doing and they all said I was doing great and they were very happy with me. Then a week later, there was a situation where I told one of the project managers that I had to take care of something for the associate director before I could take care of the project manager. Well, after that occurrance I was told I was informed that I wasn't being considered for the position as they felt I was no longer a "team player".

  30. You have to be careful with temp jobs, Karin. I've been at my job for 12 years, but I was a temp for TWO. Granted, I didn't stay in the same department for those 2 years, I've practically worked all over the bank. But when I first came here, I was told my job was going to be permanent, only to have them tell me later that even though my work was stellar, they didn't want to hire a temp, they wanted somebody from 'inside' the bank. After that I wound up in the legal department where I knew I didn't want to be permanently and I stayed there probably a month. I went to the fraud department for awhile, went over to the trust department and then I wound up in collections. That's where I was hired. I stayed in that department for about a year (I wanted my foot in the door, but I did NOT want to be a collector) and then went over to EFT for 4 years and then took the job I have now, and have had since 9/11/2001. I don't trust anything temp agencies tell me after the experiences I've had with them. All I can tell you is I wish you the best of luck whatever you decide.
