Take Me Out Back & SHOOT ME

(18 posts)
  1. I have the worst news ever. Hopper escaped!!! I'm so sick over it I want to hang myself! we had a cage set up to slip Hopper into from the traphe was in. I had to stop to grab a small board to seal a gap between the trap & the opening of the cage door. As I went to grab it I told chuck to not take his eyes off Hopper for even a second. I was gone 60 seconds & came back to find he'd escaped. I should have known better than to leave him inthe hands of someone who has no idea the blood, sweat,& tears I've gone thru for the last 6 yrs. trying to catch that cat. I'm not going to blame chuck. I should've known better than to take my eyes off him. I should've sent chuck for the board & didn't. Now I have to live with the pain of knowing that as long as I live, there will never be another opportunity for me to trap him.

I am so bummed. And I'm sorry for getting everyone all worked up with my happiness over it & then having to break this kind of news to you. I'm sorry.

  4. This is a set back, Susie, but you have your hands full with the kittens. Don't let Hopper's escape take away from you success in getting the kittens. Hang in there! You did good. :)

  5. A thing accomplished once can be repeated.

Take a deep breath, check your ankle straps and setup for the next phase.

Set your trap and hope to draw in Mom. Or maybe even Hopper again since the kits will be part of the bait today.

Have all your transfer cage materials ready to go. Is there a shed or garage you can use as a backup trap during the transfer? An escape into a closed room is not a real escape and while exciting eventually leads to restraint.

And trust in the guardian angel who lead the ol'e boy into the trap the first time.

If you get her you can still try using the kittens as bait for him.

  6. Oh Susie....I was just about to go and post my Kudos on the first thread you brought to us....What a catastrophe!!! Try to be calm, cool and collected here...I know this is a set back but Siameezer should be no. 1 right now anyway. If you're holdin' her kits hostage then they need to somehow be reunited in captivity with mom. Do you think she'll allow herself to be caught for her babies? Once she's fixed that's the end....then take Chuck out back and feed him to Hopper and the other ferals for letting Hopper go to begin with...I'M JUST KIDDING...TRYING TO KEEP THIS BAD NEWS LIGHT!! Keep us informed Susie...I sure wish I could be there to help!

  7. Oh, Susie!! As the others said, you did it once - it can happen again! Look what you have accomplished by your success with Siameezer! You are doing great!

  10. Susie, don't give up now--your run of good luck will continue, I just know it! As Karen said, right now your focus has to be on Siameezer and her kits who need to be reunited and spaying her will mean that Hopper doesn't have a target there. Just hang on sweetie, one thing at a time.

  11. Susie You have done soo well! Don't start doubting yourself now! Yes you made the mistake of asking Chuck to help, I wouldn't be suprised if he didn't let him go! I mean if you have o continue to try and trap to make sure all those furbabies are caared for then you can't live! Right? Selfish on his part!

You have succeed once and you will do so again! Just keep working on the kittens and the Siameezer and then once they are set try again!

    Love and Hugs!

  12. Susie, I am thinking positive thoughts that Hopper will come back. Just keep the faith and keep trying to catch him. He is injured and hopefully will keep letting his guard down. I have faith you will catch him and the Siameezer and will put an end to the "kitten mill". Hugs and purrs to you sweetie.

  15. Ok, taking deep breath. One step back but two steps forward by catching the kittens. When we get to the end of our rope, we tie a knot and hang on. Rooting for you Susie, maybe tonight will be the next step forward.

  16. Thanks you guys for being such wonderful people. I'm still alittle bummed. It seems like things keep getting in the way. Our neighbors behind us decided to up & tear their steps down & rebuild them. At a time when I need as little commotion in the area as possible. I'm limited to when I can put the kittens in the cage out there. It's been really cold so I have them in a large carrier inside where it's warm. When they were outside she didn't seem to show any interest in retrieving them. She made no attempt at all to even go & smell the area. I really think she has a problem this time. It looks as tho she has no milk at all in her sacks. I think her body didn't produce enuf.

I can't say for sure whether she was producing enuf to feed all 5 healthy enuf. Her response is so unusual this time. She's even been hanging under the house close to where the food is,but, she's not bothering to go down & investigate where they might be. I know she's heard her kits, but, still does not respond in the normal manner she did with her other 3 litters. I can't put the kittens out after dark because the raccoons. The way I have it rigged is one end of the trap is connected right to the door opening on the floor cage so if she goes in,the door can be raised to let her in with her babies. Because of the possibility of raccoons or possum or skunk or even one of the other ferals,I can't leave the door to the cage open.

So Siameezer must walk far enuf thru the cage & get trapped in before she can reach them. I've even riled them up to make lots of noise,& she doesn't even show nervousness or worry. She's not trying to find them. Maybe she's used to all her kits ending up gone from rescue or harm's way & just expects them to go missing after a certain point.

Sorry for such a long post. And one more thing. Any other time after having a setback like with hopper,i would've just sat down & had a good cry. This time I was in such bewilderment for it happening to begin with that I couldn't even cry. As much as I'd like to continue to use the kittens as bait to try & catch her, I'mgoing to have to try & find a reputable cat rescue tomorrow that can take the five & give them the needed attention that I just don't have the experience for. I honestly don't think Siameezer wants them back. Her milk seems to have dried up & I don't think she'd be able to take care of all five & have them survive. I promise you ,I'll keep you posted as to whether a miracle happens again hear in Manteca. {{{HUGS}}} to all of you for caring so much.

  17. Maybe she is ill. Having litter after litter begins to take a toll on them after a while.

  18. Thats very sad that she doesn't even acknowledge them. Also sad that they will have to be taken to a rescue center... I wish I could help you out with the kittens :(
