Buttercup, I've just now seen this thread, and I have to throw in my two cents with the others. If necessary, LET HIM GO OFF THE BLAMED DEEP END! I, myself, have spent my whole life trying to save people from themselves, and it never worked. Not even once. Even if the man does have a psych illness, learning to take responsibility for his own behavior is an important part of the treatment.

Buttercup, I think the ball's in your court. Time to sit down and chat with him about his plans. Ask him what he thinks would be a reasonable deadline for him to get a job, save up security deposit & first month's rent, and move out. If it's more than 6 months, gently steer him back toward something that's 6 months or less.
The trick to this is to have HIM set the reasonable deadline for moving out. Then he can work toward that goal (including getting a job to pay for it).
