  1. I know a lot of you were praying for me and worried about me so I thought I would give you all and update and some good news.

Wednesday, after getting home from class (I got 50/50 on the half of the test where we had to do three paragraphs .. I'll find out about the multiple choice part of the test next Wednesday), I was pretty much miserable. I was, for the most part, chained to a water glass or bottle because my mouth hurt constantly and drinking cool/ice cold water was the only thing that eased the pain. It was so bad that, if I had to put the water bottle down and go into another room, I would find myself running back to find the water bottle in a pain-induced panic.

That night, I was only able to sleep for 2-5 minutes at a time before having to reach for the water glass. I had taken my last pain pill so there was no relief in sight. I was so out of it that I kept falling asleep wherever I was sitting and dropping the water glass. Between that night and the next day, I had cleaned up water and ice at least 10 times! The doctor wouldn't approve of a refill for the pain medicine so my roommate got on the phone and called them. The doctor finally agreed to call in a refill but had the nurse tell me that she wanted me to go to the emergency room because of my high blood pressure (at that time, my blood pressure was 135/83 - and this was when I was in severe pain -- hardly worth going to the hospital for). I told the nurse this and she just went on about how the emergency room doctor could sign the paper for the dentist. I just basically refused saying that my blood pressure was normal that day and hung up the phone. I see no reason to pay several hundred dollars that I don't have just to get a doctor to sign a paper when there are several dentists that don't check blood pressure.

Anyway, we got the medicine and I took two pills right away then started myself back on the amoxicilin which I had quit taking a few days ago because I had taken it for 14 days straight. I should mention that at this point the whole side of my face was so sore that I couldn't touch it. Everything hurt - even crying hurt! So I took 3 amoxicilin capsules to start then later on took a third pain pill and 4 excedrin back and body tablets because, by that time, even the water wasn't easing the pain.

About 2 hours later, I noticed that I wasn't needing the water as much. Not long after that, the pain eased up almost completely! I went to bed at about 10:30 and don't remember anything until I woke up much later on desperately needing to use the restroom. I checked the clock at it was 5:30am!! I had actually slept for 7 hours straight! One other thing I noticed -- NO TOOTHACHE!!!!

I went back to sleep and woke up at 10:30am with only a mild toothache. I only had to take one of the pain pills and two excedrin back and body pills instead of the normal 1 1/2 pain pills, 4 excedrin back and body, and 2-4 of the over the counter motrin tablets.

I've spent much of the day sleeping and I feel pretty good. The tooth is still painful but not really too bad. It is sore enough that I cannot bite down on it but it isn't so sore that I cannot touch it with my tongue. Yesterday, anything except water touching that tooth would show me new levels of pain. Today, it's just sore. All things considered, I do not want to know how bad that infection had gotten. I am still wondering how it got like that considering I had been taking amoxicillin when this whole thing started.

So, I am keeping on my course of antibiotics and just taking it easy. I am going to start searching for a good dentist starting with asking everybody from my church on Sunday. Monday, I will start making the calls so I can hopefully get this tooth pulled by Friday.

  2. Great news Owlwatcher!! I am so glad the pain has finally abated for you. Hopefully your blood pressure will now go to a more normal level so that you can get your tooth looked at. Is 135/83 considered normal blood pressure? Mine was 120/80 last time I had a physical.

  4. Good news owlwatcher.
I have been thinking of you, and wondering how you have been.
Maybe that abcess finally drained, and took the pressure.
In any case, get it taken care of.
    Hugs and purrs

  6. "Is 135/83 considered normal blood pressure? Mine was 120/80 last time I had a physical."

I've always heard that 120/80 is normal. 135/83 is slightly high but not all that bad.

"Congrats on the essay part of your test. Wow all that pain and you can take a test you must have super powers."

It wasn't an essay (I would have died on an essay) -- I should have been more clear on that -- it was just three paragraphs that had to be typed out and formatted in Word. Something that's practically second nature to me under normal conditions but was more than a little challenging under the circumstances. But, I do have to brag about my psychology test on Monday. I had the bad toothache and needed the water with me on that day too but on that day I was very messed up on the pain medicine. I still got 24/24 on that test *grins*

  7. Very good OW.
I think the BP is fine.
I went into the clinic on campus one day with 220/120.
They pulled out the EEG (or is it EKG) machine, and was ready to send me to emergency.

  8. owlwatcher, glad that the pain has finally abated for a bit and good wishes on finding a new dentist that will handle it. I agree with aristabobbi, your bp is fine within reason, I too have had my bp spike like hers @ 220/160 and the er personnel were sure I was going to stroke out....it was because I had an infection from h**l and had been struck by lightning (another story). Congrats on the test(s) and sure that your mult choice went just as well!

  11. We need the lightning story. Come on AZDEBRA, tell us all about it, we're all sitting comfortably ....

    Posted 4 years ago by Pollys_Mum_in_UK_26/05 #

  12. LOL, sitting @ work, typing on the console(s) with wireless headset on using the radio and lightning came thru all the cables. Struck 4 of us, fried 8 computer systems (4 monitors, 3 computers, 2 keyboards, 2 mice each), plus $250,000 worth of computer boards. All came thru the headsets and the keyboards via the cables, and thru the headsets because it was close to the strike zone. Three of us are still suffering from it, one has multitude of problems that were never there before, my immune system is completely different, and one gentleman is still having problems with his hearing. The other lady won't say she is suffering from anything, she is afraid she will be forced to retire. Management keeps trying to say it never happened, but they can't explain the medical problems we are having, plus the multitude of computers that were burnt/fried. When it starts to storm now, we take off our headsets and call the stations to tell them.

  15. OW, I am so glad that you are feeling better. I was worried about you.

AZDEBRA, my father got zapped by lightning too and he (before he passed away) used to make everybody hang up the phones even if it was a drip of rain.

  16. BTDT, we do the same in here. We tell the guys in the field, if its storming overhead or near us, we aren't using the radio, sorry won't do this again.

  18. AZDEBRA, you say:
"...Management keeps trying to say it never happened, but they can't explain the medical problems we are having, plus the multitude of computers that were burnt/fried..."

Please tell me this was reported to OSHA. You all have basis for workers' comp claims, too -- and possibly also a civil claim for damages, esp. if there are lingering health problems. The situation you describe -- including the woman who fears being "forced" to retire if she "complains" -- sounds like an abusive work environment. That's true even if you think you have excellent relationships with all your suprevisors and bosses. I am not a lawyer, but I am a former union organizer, and a veteran of both arbitration over workplace health issues and an employment law civil suit concerning whitleblower retailiation (settled well). I have a permanent interest in OSHA and workplace health, and I know that nothing you're describing about management's reaction is right. You won't know for sure for many years how badly you were damaged, but you only have a short window -- probably a year -- in which to file claims. PLEASE consult local OSHA activists, or a lawyer who specializes in employemnt law from the plaintiff's side. You can start here: http://finduslaw.com/ask_an_employment_lawyer
Good luck -- and don't take no for an answer!

  20. Owlwatcher, I wish you the best of luck finding a dentist soonest! And please, please, please keep up on a schedule of pain medication & antibiotic!

Even if the infection is now draining, you *need* the antibiotics to knock that infection down to a more manageable level. About the pain relief... I once had a doctor explain to me that if you have an intense pain that's of significant duration, as long as you can tolerate the painkilers, it's important to take the painkillers regularly, not just when the pain begins to hurt intolerably. That's because it takes your body a while to register pain, but it takes even longer for the pain to begin to subside, once it's gotten going.

So please, please, please take the meds on a scheduled, regular basis. Set an alarm if you have to, whether on your computer, on a cell phone, whatever! It can make all the difference in the world.

  21. "So please, please, please take the meds on a scheduled, regular basis."

Oh, you don't have to worry about that. I am allergic to pain - it makes me break out in tears! I have a schedule for all my medicines written up on my wall on a piece of 'dry erase wall paper' so I can update it whenever I take my medicines.

I will keep up the antibiotics for 10 days even if I get the tooth removed before then (and I better have this thing removed this week!!).

I did make the mistake of not taking my pain medicine on time this morning and my tooth quickly reminded me that I still need it. Although I am taking a much lower dosage - just one of the prescription pills with two excedrin back and body tablets. This wipes out the pain completely where it used to take 1 1/2 - 2 of the prescription pills with 4 excedrin back and body tablets and about 800mg of ibuprofen just to make things somewhat tolerable for me.

  24. Owlwatcher: did you read my post on your other strand about the link between periodontal disease and heart disease? Not to give you something else to worry about, but because I want to see you posting for a long time, littermate!

  25. ---- "Owlwatcher: did you read my post on your other strand about the link between periodontal disease and heart disease? Not to give you something else to worry about, but because I want to see you posting for a long time, littermate!"----

I read it and would have loved to have shown it to the doctor I was seeing but I really don't think I will be going back to that place.

I am hoping to have this tooth taken care of by the end of the week so I won't have to worry about it anymore and I am taking much better care of the rest of my teeth so I won't have to go through this again! My other teeth are all in good shape - 4 of my fillings were redone about 3 years ago when I got 3 of my root canals done. This last tooth was the only one that needed any work and I didn't have the money to get it taken care of until now. The remaining teeth are healthy and have no signs of any problems and I am going to do my best to keep it that way!

  26. Darling Owlwatcher, I am so glad that the pain is leaving! I am praying for you, and things are going to get much better.

  27. OW,Great to hear your getting the tooth fixed by week's end.Tooth pain is nothing to play around with(I know you're not,BTW).I go to have major oral surgery Nov.8th,(18 extractions and full uppers and lowers made.)So I can commiserate w/you.Aren't modern pain medicine and next-generation antibiotics glorious things? AZDEBRA,please tell me you guys are pushing for legal settlement of some kind! Even though lightning can be classified an "Act of God" by insurers, they've got to be held to account somehow!

  28. tigerpaw, we are working on it, plus dealing with the after-effects of the strike that didn't happen according to them...
