You I was mowing my yard thinking, it would be great to take the kids fishing when I'm done here, then came in and had an email from my oldest daugher(18), got me to missing them pretty bad. Such is the month I'm having, got me to thinking also about BrandiLee who's son Josh is training for deployment to Iraq and how she must be feeling. I don't know if any of you have communicated with her anywhere but her but we talk on myspace from time to time. Did you know Josh had to buy his own bulletproof vest? How outrageous is that? I won't get into my personal feelings/beliefs about what is going on in Iraq but shouldn't the government be supply stuff like bulletproof vests? Something needs to be done but other than writing letters to elected officials I'm at a loss

Chuck, I understand what you are Brandilee are going through. Missing your kids has to be the hardest thing in the world. As for Josh having to buy his own bullet proof vest, yes, I was aware of that. Both of my sons are in the military and the military finds it is more important to buy useless things than things that the enlisted or non com officers need. I think it is awful and my kids have told me to SHH. They are tired of hearing it. I wish that there was something we as a population could/can do, but until the elections come... well, you know, we have to wait.
Thanks for letting me vent.

Tough to be separated from your kids, Crazycatman. Even when they live with you, as teens they become more independent and spend less time with the parents. Maybe it's time to plan a trip to see them. {{{hugs}}}

Whaaaaaat??!! The world really HAS gone mad. Like (I suspect) many of you, I have fairly strong opinions on the situation in Iraq (& Afghanistan), but if we are out there, surely the least we can do is support the poor sods putting their necks on the line?
{{Hugs}} to Brandilee & Crazycatman xx

Bring them all home, the war was completely illegal anyway. Let's not get any more killed.
I miss my daughter, and she's only been away at Uni for a week! She's 4 and a half hours' drive away (it's longer by train!) and I know if I go and visit her she will regard it as treating her like a child instead of allowing her her independence. She's my best friend and without her I feel totally bereft. I suppose I'll just have to get used to it, she's a big girl now and won't want to be saddled with a clingy Mum. If you let them go with good grace, they will keep coming back. If you try to cling they will do all they can to break free and stay away.

I would so love it if the people who make the decisions like "buy your own armor" somehow magically switched positions with the grunts who are actually facing the enemy guns and bombs. They'd soon learn what "support the troops" means.
Ah, if only Halliburton and Blackwater made armor and vests. Of course, the military would pay 400 times the actual price, but at least the soldiers would have them.
Prayers for your (and everybody's, US and Iraqi) children to come home sound in body, spirit, and mind.

The real problem is that Congress has been putting off getting our guys all the equipment they needed because they didn't want to spend the money on it, now it has all caught up to them.
It's not that there isn't the money for it, but the companies that manufacture the armor can't churn them out fast enough and (of course) there are only certain companies that have contracts to make armor for the military.
What we really need is a Congress that is less concerned with lining their pockets and more concerned with the country - and I mean BOTH sides of the aisle on that too!

Write your congressman/woman and senators, and not just once, write many times, they get paid a lot of money for the rest of their lives and spend a lot of time supporting their 'favorite' supporters. Even if a congressman or senator gets convicted of a crime, they continue to be paid for the rest of their lives so lets make them work for it. The petty annoyances of their constituients (sp) make a difference once they start getting lots of those annoying letters about even the simple things in life like bulletproof vests. Rather than having communities having fund raisers to buy them for their soldiers of the services. Hell I watch Boeing work on their $3 billion dollar contract every night at work on a system that should be perfect especially since tank units have used it for YEARS...but they can't find a fire that is less than .25 miles away from their tower (and not a small fire, it was a few hundred acres)! Sorry off my soapbox now, what the government pays for is stupid and does make me mad :(

Okay, before I comment on this topic, I'd like to be informed. Do only enlisted men have to buy their vests -- and draftees are given vests? Or does everyone have to buy their vest?

Jo, they all have to buy their own vests, its not issued items with their TA-50 equipment.

Thanks, AZDEB. I'm blown away by this -- no pun intended -- and will retreat to give it some thought.

Aren't our guys and gals also left to their own devices in armoring their vehicles?

This is all just so apalling to me. May I ask which vehicles you mean, KW?

I think this applies to anything other than a tank. The homemade explosive devices rip through the normal body of other vehicles. I've seen photos of soldiers having welded old car doors to the outside of their vehicles to make them less easily penetrated. I think the gov. is working on improving the armor on these vehicles but it is a huge game of catch up.
