I'm looking for suggestions on what I can get my cat for our birthday - we don't know when his actual birthday is but he's celebrated with me for the last 15 or so years. He's quite old now, either somewhere between 17 and 19 (we've had him since he was a kitten but I can't remember when we got him since I was about 5). He has arthritis and therefore doesn't play much anymore. He's also got kidney failure so all his favourite treats and food are out.
Any suggestions on what I can get him? Are there any kidney-safe cat treats? He already has cat DVDs which he loves, and since he went into acute kidney failure he's been more active than I'd seen him for at least a year before, but he still only plays for a few seconds now. I'm thinking about getting him a cat fountain, since he has to drink a lot now and apparently cats prefer running water, but I'm wondering about the weight as I'd have to post it (he's my parents cat really but I grew up with him). So any suggestions appreciated!

Metsa, the cat fountain is a really good idea. I have one for my cats, and they love it! Got mine from Drs. Foster and Smith ~ you can see it here: http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?c=3261+1910+1783&pcatid=1783 I don't have the aqua garden though... I don't think they even offered it when I bought my waterer. They carry several other types of waterers here too, just search the site. They can ship directly to your parents house for you. I think I've seen these at Petsmart now too, if that is an option for you.

A paper bag with his most favorite food, catnip or something that makes a snappy noise in it. My cat went through a period when I was unable to play with him so he stopped. But I realized he needed some help getting back into it (and so did I) and I got out a paper bag and put catnip in it. Just the novelty got him interested. It took him a long time to play, but I could see that just being interested was a treat for him. Elizabeth

What about a comfortable cat bed that is heated? The heat would ease his discomfort from his arthritis. Here is an example: http://www.drsfostersmith.com/Product/Prod_Display.cfm?pcatid=3489
Here is one marketed in the UK: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Small-Heated-Dogs-Cats-15lbs/dp/B0017Y4MCK/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=kitchen&qid=1209833782&sr=8-3

I've had a kitty with both arthritis and chronic renal disease. Either the fountain or the heating pad is a great idea. Suede spent hours in her little "hot box". We got both her padded square box and the heating pad from Drs. Foster & Smith.

Hi metsa - try pet-supermarket.co.uk for the drinking fountain, I think the PDSA online shop also sells them.
The heat thing is a good idea as well, if not a whole bed, you could buy a snugglesafe (microwave for about 6 mins, and provides heat for about 8 hours - we've got one for Mum's elderly cat, he loves it!).
Wherever you order from, you can probably specify an alternative delivery address, and get the present sent directly to your parents.
