My husband's tooth with the lost filling did turn out to be abcessed and it has to be pulled. He's got an evaluation appointment with an oral surgeon tomorrow afternoon, and they'll decide the best way to go about removing it. It's reached sort of a dangerous stage. The antibiotic the dentist prescribed didn't work, so this has to be done ASAP to keep the infection from going systemic; the dentist said it could even cause meningitis. TDK prayers, please.

Prayers and hugs, healing white light to Mr. Leeny :)
Hope all goes well-sounds sort of scary.

It is, HM. I think I'm more scared than my husband. Because of his mental disability, he doesn't really understand as clearly as the dentist's people and I that this has actually gotten near a life-threatening point.
Smiling at "Mr. Leeny"; I guess that's fair, because I've been "Mrs. Chip" on several occasions.

My husband was examined by an oral surgeon yesterday, who agreed with the dentist's recommendation of pulling the tooth rather than trying to do a root canal. Surgery is scheduled for Tuesday the 13th at 2:00 pm. It will be done under local anesthesia because it's a quick procedure and because general anesthesia would pose more risks than benefits in this case, given my husband's general medical condition. That's one concern we won't have.

Thanks for the update Leeny. I am praying it all goes fine with his surgery.

Oh, and another good thing...the procedure is turning out to cost a lot less than I thought it would. I thought I was going to have to take out a medical loan to pay for it, but I have enough credit open on the card I use for medical bills to cover the procedure. The oral surgeon even gave us a discount on yesterday's exam. The dentist must have explained our situation to them.

Well, the infected tooth is now out. It was a very quick procedure, and my husband was amazed that it was so much simpler than he was afraid it would be. He's been having some pain since the local anesthetic wore off, some bleeding and some numbness, but he has pain medication, and everything he's experiencing is normal.
They showed my husband the tooth after extracting it, and he said it looked very nasty. I think he's going to feel much better with it gone.

I'm glad for him. I'll bet he's relieved.

The anticipation is the worst part, isn't it! Once it's over the procedure never seems to be as bad as what we imagined it would be. I'm so glad that it's over. Now, just tuck a napkin under his chin!

Here's something else my husband says no one else would believe, but I told him I know a lot of people who would believe it. All the time that he wasn't feeling well, Buttercup and Penny stayed right with him on the couch. He said they even took turns eating and using the litter box. I took off work all afternoon yesterday, so I was at home with him after the tooth was extracted. The girls would not stay on the sofa. Buttercup stuck to her favorite lounging spot on the armchair, and Penny was everywhere. Now that I'm back at work, the girls are sticking to the sofa with Dad again. They knew yesterday that they could "stand down" for a rest because Mom was there to look after Dad; today they're back on duty.

Thanks, everyone. WWM, the thing that bothered him most was that he wasn't allowed to spit for 24 hours; they didn't want any kind of vacuum created in the mouth that could get the bleeding started again. He found it very gross to have to swallow--well, you know. I'm sure he feels better now that he can expectorate it.
-
Oh, arg, Leeny! Yes, I can just imagine how distressing that was for him. We don't realize the many things that we do until we're told not to do them. And not to spit after dental surgery is just not normal.
