A friend is seriously neglecting/abusing her animals! - what to do?

(19 posts)
  1. Hey guys, its been a while since I have been on the site..a few weeks I supose. Anyways, I went to visit a friends for her birthday with my boyfriend last weekend (a couple, that the guy has been best friends with my boyfriend for decades). They recently lost a cat (about 3 years old) to crystals in his bladder - this crystal was about the size of a soft ball by the time they took him (Harry) to the vet! This news automatically shocked me, how could you not notice a growth the size of a soft ball in your cat?!

Anyways, after loosing Harry they went out and got a new kitten called Zeplin from a stranger giving away kittens down the road. Well I saw this kitten that they have had for about 2 weeks, and he cannot be anymore than 6 weeks old right now! WAAAY too young to be taken away from his mother. He has very watery eyes, and a really bad case of ear mites! I told my friend that she should take him to the vet and she just insisted the earmites were flakes of dirt from the dog licking the kittens ears.

Now speaking of the dog, it is not trained, allowed to eat people food, cat poo and anything it can get its paws on. While we were there it had very bad breath so our friends reaction was to put colgate (human!) toothpaste in its mouth!! Along with this dog they have another cat, that most DEFINATELY has worms or something along those lines..its stomach is so sunken in, fur is patchy, and it just doesnt look well at all! On top of all of this the 6 week old kitten at 1 year old cat are both eating adult generic dry cat food.
None of these animals has a single toy to play with, the kitten has a shoe box for a litter tray, and they just seem very neglected...

I have talked to my boyfriend about reporting them (he actually suggested it) and we think these would definately be grounds for doing so! But what do you think?? It took all of my effort not to just put that poor kitten in my purse and take it home with me when I left their house!

    Thanks for reading guys!

  2. Also, we went there for a big party - 40 or so people and they didnt put the animals away somewhere to be safe, the tiny kitten was being picked up and dropped continually! I just felt so bad for the little guy!

  3. I'd probably report them, but that's just me. Those animals must be miserable.

  4. You need to do something. It's like a child being neglected. Call whomever or go and take the cats. Report them now. Those animals need help and fast.

  5. I think I would report them also; you might find out if your local animal control will take action on annonymous reports if you're worried about repercussions.

  6. Definitely report them. But as for the issue with the cat they lost, we had the same thing happen to one of our kids. He became lethargic one morning and we immediately rushed him to emergency care and his bladder has become softball size. We never knew. But after telling us he wouldn't survive the night I rocked him all night and he survived several years longer. Mother's love. Works miracles. And those babies you described need a miracle. That is so awful! Like you, I would have secreted the kitten away. Please tell me these people don't have children.

  7. Yep, I agree, report them! And I wish you HAD brought the kitten home in your purse! :)

  8. I don't know...if they are reported, won't Animal Control simply euthanize the animals? That is what would happen here. I think I would go over and have a heart-to-heart with the friend. Tell her your concerns, maybe offer to go with her to the vet? Maybe she doesn't realize she is neglecting them. Someone in my neighborhood had a few outdoor cats that were pregnant, in fights, and one had what appeared to be some kind of cancer on it's head and was jsut left outside like that! I gave her the number of a spay clinic and she did get her cat spayed. I went over there and told her that I was concerned that her cat was suffering (the one with cancer) and she took that cat in, and he had to be put to sleep. Sometimes people who have more of a country background do not see thier animals as children like we do.

  9. Friend or no, you have to report this. These people have no business having animals.

You could speak with them and offer to take the kitten from them, strongly suggesting they get medical attention for the other two. Failing that, call to report.

  10. I must say I would report them and that kind of neglect would make me seriously consider if I would like to keep these people as my friends.

  11. I would report them or I would try to see if I could find new homes for the animals. They all sound like they need to visit the vet. Hope you can help them. I would also reconsider them as friends as well. Not someone I want to be around if they treat their pets like this. I really hope they do not procreate.

  12. Friends????? Yuck! REPORT THEM!!!!! Sounds like the animals are suffering terribly. Aren't there laws where you live?

  13. Ask yourself one question.... If something happens to any of these animals now that you have seen all that neglect occuring, could you live with yourself?

Somehow, I think I already know the answer to that, and I think you already know what to do. Think about what would be best for these precious animals and let your heart guide you.

I know this will be hard for you as they are as you described them "friends". Be a friend and make the call.

  14. Yes you do already know the answer...Report! Report! Report!

  15. heh, I use the term "friends" reluctantly, especially in the case of the female. The vet described the crystals in Harry's bladder as "extremely preventable" which deeply offended the owner.

I have looked into reporting it, but I want to make sure I know what will happen to the animals if they are taken away. Make sure they are not put to sleep and make it to the vet. They are all 1 year old or younger so I feel they would have a pretty good chance at getting adopted. If not, I will adopt them! If it was possible to take the kitten home without her obviously knowing (pictures, through other friends and such) I would have!!..

And to put your minds at a bit of ease, no they dont have kids! Thankfully!!

  16. Thank God there are no children involved.

When you make the call, tell the authorities that you ARE willing to adopt them all or at least foster them till suitable homes are found, after they are checked at the vet of course. You will want to assure that they are healthy enough to enter YOUR home. The welfare of your animals will have to take first priority.

    Good luck to you and God bless your for looking out for those who can't help themselves. {{{hugs}}}

  17. Definitely call. And also, do tell them you would be willing to foster the animals. :)

  18. Animals can't speak for themselves, it is up to us to help them. Have you spoken to this person about this? If it still continues, friend or not, if an animal is being hurt or neglected in any way report it. And yes, I agree with those that said "what will happen to the animals" In most cases the person in question will be giving a warning to comply with decent care of the animals, if the incident happens again the animals are taken away and put into shelters to be adopted.

  19. Report Them...Don't Hesitate...If you didn't already know it was necessary you wouldn't have brought it to the TDK Table. Please report it. It can be done anonymously.
