  1. Someone recently told me there is technically a difference between a calico and tri-color. I thought tri-colors are calicos? Can anyone enlighten me, please?

  2. Good question marnet - having a calico/tri colour myself, I'll be interested in seeing an answer!

  3. I believe that calico cats all have a base color of white. Tri color don't necessarily have white in their color palate. Don't quote me..I'm not real sure on this..

  4. But what would be the third color if not white? I'm confused, I thought they were the same too. And then you throw tortoise in there and I'm really confused!

  5. Our Button is white/ginger/black - I've always thought she was a calico (also called a tortoiseshell and white) - this is confusing!

  6. Yep. Calico, tri-color, tortie.......I'll have to remember and ask my vet next time I have any of my 4 fur babies in for check-up and shots.

  7. My mom always said it was a Calico Cat only if it fought with a Gingham Dog.

The long of it is here http://www.fanciers.com/cat-faqs/tricolors.shtml

The short of it is 3 colors in patches (spots) calico/tri-color or 2 non-white/ 3 colors intermingled tortiseshell

  8. Tortie's are clearly with no White. A base of black with usually Brown & Ginger. I have a long-haired Tortie myself. Her Mother is Snowshoe Siamese & her Father is Orangie.

Calico's have a base color of White with any number of colors in with it. Tri' color is just another nickname for either.

    Hope that helps.

  9. How funny! I wonder what Sweet Pea would be, then?

(Technically, she has 3 colors... but unless you look pretty carefully for it, you'd never know she has white anywhere on her body. Her markings are almost entirely classic brindle/tortoiseshell coloration.)

  10. Your pretty Sweet pea is a tortie. From what I understand the base color for torties is either balck (tortie - my Tigerlilly)) or charcoal or gray (dilute tortie - my Kara and Karina). I agree with Susie, the base color for calicos is white.

  11. I've never heard of a tortie having white coloration included. Sweet Pea has a white spot on her abdomen, 2 white whiskers, and a mere brush of some white hairs near her ears and chin. I learn something new every day!!

  12. Good point anncetera, I did not see the white on her photo, but I believe the key is that the base color not be white.

  13. Oooooh, thanks Ailuromaniac for the link to the full explanation! Neat.

  14. I have both. Callie is the Tortie, and Lavy is the Calico. Then you have Baby Sally Semi-Meezer, who is pure blue at the front, but has a dilute tortie butt. We just call her "Brindle Butt."

  16. ailuromaniac...Thanks for the link. I tend to use lingo loosely. When I say Tortie,I'm simply shortening the term Tortishell. Anyone I've evr talked with about tri-color simply used the word to describe how many colors a Calico or Tortie had. My long-haired feral female,Prettygirl is a true tortishell according to yourlink. She has no destinct spots & her 3 colors all softly blend into one another. Thanks. I learned alot more about my own feral cats because of your link.
