  1. I don't know why I suddenly had a flea bite my ear about this Vet in Odessa, TX but I googled Dr Elrod.

That man had the scariest looking small animal practice in town. The signs were faded, it was tucked in a depressed business section across from the RR tracks (and I am certain it still is) the reception was bleak and covered in old Veterinary Magazines with a small bare patch on the desk for a receipt book. You only went to Dr. Elrod by word of mouth. You would not go by sight.

However, the back was a dream of cleanliness and order. If you went to Dr Elrod for your cats and dogs, you knew the front was just unimportant. Elrod made his living from the Ranch Animal practice, he made his place in heaven in the small animal practice. He treats the kitties and puppies for love.

Fees were obviously barely enough to cover costs and when you called for that appointment be it a well patient visit, spay/neuter appt. or emergency you could tell from the background that you were talking to his home and he came in especially for Fluffy or Rex or .....

One time I took my cat in and he had a new mom in the back with a broken leg in a cast. He had picked her up from the highway in front of the office then searched the tracks and fields near by until he found her kittens. He set mom's leg and reunited her with her babies then later found them homes at his own expense.

He must be somewhere around 80 yrs old. I thought he should get a special salute from us.

  4. 2bp, trust me... you DO NOT want to live in Odessa!!! Remember, I live in Midland, which is just down the road from Odessa.

My vet clinic here in Midland is much like that. It is, to put it mildly, a dump. But, it houses absolutely the two best vets in town. Our vet saved little Willow's leg when others said that it would have to be amputated. And, the surgery plus almost a week's hospitalization cost us only $175. It's Tall City Vet Clinic and they are great.

  5. What a beautiful tribute you wrote to him...maybe, just maybe someone close to him is a TDK lurker and will let him know what a wonderful impression and difference he has made in his career..

  6. We have a vet like that locally. He's not that old - about 60, but his office is tiny, no computers anywhere. He has one exam room and it is spotlessly clean. He happens to be a personal friend of my husband's. He admits that he "doctors the old fashioned way."

  7. I will tell my Odessa buddies! In fact, I will copy this and email it to them. One of them has a dog named General that is about as big as a rat....

  8. What an angel of a Vet. It's nice to know that some people do it because they LOVE animals. Kudos to Dr. Elrod!!!

WWM, what happened to Willow's leg????

  9. My vet is wonderful, too, and charges outrageously small amts. for his service. I asked him why he charged so little, when a block away they charge at least four times more, and he explained that 'he's doing God's work'. Last month, Bosley's vet visit + MEDICATION was only $45.00.

  10. wow FH. I wish I could find a vet like that.

  11. Oh, I'll bet that you weren't on TDK when Willow came to us, CM! Last May we were out of town and we had a friend stay with our elderly kitty, Bombalurina. Bomber had throat and mouth cancer and we couldn't leave her alone. Although, she was so spoiled her whole life that we always had a sitter :-)

Anyway, we came home and our friend had left a long note about how Bomber had done and at the very end it said, "PS - there is a kitten in the shop in the garage with a badly broken leg." We had said that we weren't going to have anymore kitties after we lost Bomber because it was just too hard. But, of course I went into the garage. And here was this tiny kitten who our friend had found hiding in a tree in our backyard. She had a compound break in her right rear leg. We'll never know how that happened, or how she got in that tree. She weighed less than a pound and we figured she was about a month old. And she was black - just like Bomber! At first my husband wouldn't even go look at her. But the next morning when I went to the gym, I asked him to please feed the kitten. By the time that we got home, she was ours!

Our friend had taken her to the ER and they said that the kitten should either be put down or have the leg amputated. Thank goodness she brought Willow back home and didn't let them touch her. So we took her to our vet, not knowing if they could save either the leg or Willow. But, they were great and she was in surgery with both doctors for about an hour. She had to have pins put in her little leg.

She limps just a bit now, and when it's damp it's a little bit worse. But boy, can she run and jump. We don't know how it will be when she's older. Probably she will have a little arthritis in that leg. So our vet has us giving her arthritis chews every day. Willow thinks that they are treats!

    She's a mess....

  14. Hi ya'll. Emerging from my cave. We have one of these wondrous vets here in Austin. His name is Michael Paclik and his clinic is Windsor Park Vet Clinic. It's in a part of town where you need to carry a firearm. But he is the kindest, most competent, experienced, and inexpensive vet in Austin. We don't go to him any more because he stopped taking appts and only takes drop-offs for routine stuff. That's a long haul across Austin--he couldn't be further away and still be in the same city. But, happy ending...one of his interns opened a clinic about five minutes away!

  15. I wonder if Dr Elrod would be amazed if a flock of thank you letters came to him from TDKers!

  16. The most amazing vet I've had the privilege to use for my own kitties works in a not-great section of town, at Raytown-Gregory Animal Hospital. But this wonderful man was kind enough to make a house call, with a vet tech, to see one of my cats. He'd never met my feral Big Guy before, but he listened carefully as I explained what had been done so far to treat BG's kidney failure. We discussed the inescapable difficulties of trying to continue further treatment of chronic kidney failure in a feral cat.

He had a hard time finding a viable vein, but was careful not to stick Big Guy until he found the most likely, accessible vein. Big Guy passed away, apparently relaxed, content, but subdued, while lying in the warm sunshine.

He charged me a ridiculously small amount for driving 15 miles roundtrip with a vet tech, a minimum of an hours' time for both of them. I thanked him profusely for making the trip, as it dramatically reduced stress for both Big Guy and me.

Thank God for veterinarians who practice more for love than money!

(The other vets who often garner my thanks are the ones who volunteer their time for the large-volume spay/neuter clinics held frequently in the metro area. The amount of suffering they help reduce or prevent is impossible to measure!)

  17. Kudos to these wonderful vets--back when I had animals, my dobe went after a wee kit in the yard--not to hurt her, just cause she was excited--when I went out the baby had no function in her rear legs--course I hauled her to our vet, Dr. Curley and he examined her and told me that she had probably been either kicked or thrown by someone and broke her back--he euthanized her immediately and only charged me $8 for the shot. I felt bad, but at least she wasn't left in pain. I used him for all my animals and a few strays too, til he retired. He was always more worried about the animal than about the money.

  18. Dr. Elrod would be more than amazed to receive letters, I'm quite certain!

  19. PJ that is a cool idea....I'm loving reading these stories..sometimes after seeing all the animal cruelty stories you forget that there are alot of people out there going above and beyond for animals...keep the stories coming, this is a very uplifting thread.

  20. About 8 years ago, I found a baby kitten in our yard, mewing and mewing. She was all black and very alone. I checked for mama and couldn't find her anywhere. Even my hubby fell in love and said let's keep her. So I isolated her from Bastian and went to work. Well I didn't stay long, I thought something wasn't right with our little angel. We named her Hershey. When I came home, she couldn't walk on her back legs. I called the Cat Clinic and they told me to bring her right in. Well one of the vets there Dr. Lori Konig is awesome. She saw Hershey and said she wasn't going to live, this is why the mama left her. I was heartbroken. She was so little, so precious. She assured me they would keep her comfortable till she passed. I was sobbing uncontrollably. She told the assistant not to charge me since it was a good samaritan kitty. Dr. Konig is such a great doctor, it was so nice of her not to charge me for a visit, when I did take up a bit of her time. I cried on the way to the Clinic, there at the Clinic and on the way home. I only had her a day but I loved her.

  21. awwww.. RIP Hershey...at least she was loved...

  22. It's impossible not to love these sweet kittens - and for a day she knew love.

  23. This man sounds soooo wonderful...I know God has a special place in heaven for men like these. From my experience, most vets now days just don't operate the way this one does. Kudos to Dr. Elrod! May God Bless his everday!

  24. I asked one of my friends who has lived in Odessa forever about Dr. Elrod and just heard back from her today. This is what she said:

Dr. Elrod enjoys a great rep amoung the farm & ranch folks around here. The
ranches especially call on him, I'm sure he is set up to go to them. He is well
know in the rodeo circuit. I could be wrong, but think his son is following in
his footsteps. We had another vet here about the same way way out west of town.
Loved that man and would have used him for myself if he would have accepted 2
    legged patients.
