  1. My 6 mo/old kitten has been very quiet ever since i got her, but for the past few days, she's started becoming very vocal. She's not distressed, hungry, in pain, etc... in fact, right now she's sunning herself, happy as a clown, and just meowing away.

I wouldn't care so much except one of her favorite times to start up is 3am.

    Any suggestions?

  2. First of all, welcome to TDK, Heather. Has your kitten been spayed yet? If not, that could be part of the problem. It is spring time (mating season) and if there are other kitties roaming around outside your residence, they may be "marking" a territory, and your kitten may smell their presence. That, too, could be causing the new vocalization behavior.

  3. I think kittymom hit the nail on the head!! It is the season, she is probably in heat...get her to the vet to get fixed as soon as possible...If she is already fixed??? she may just be a talker, one of mine never shuts up!!

  4. Oh, yes--she's in heat! That's the first sign, and she's the right age. Make sure she doesn't run out the door--she will try. Get her to the vet for her "Day at the spa".

  5. Oh and welcome Heather!!

  6. And if she's been fixed, maybe she's just hit the feline equivalent of the terrible twos - my Bobby was a terror between 6 months and a year and Mil, who's 5 months is getting there!

  7. I don't Bobby was ever a terror.

    Welcome Heather.

  8. I agree that the girl has gone "Boy Crazy"! Teenagers....

  9. Thanks for the welcome!

My little baby kitten is old enough to be in heat? That makes me a bit sad... but it also explains her new love of singing. Thanks!

  10. Heather_Hyde, female cats can be mature enough to go into heat at only 20 weeks of age (5 months). It's no great surprise that, historically, that cats were symbolic of rapid reproduction, second only to rabbits!

Please, do be especially careful of her when entering & exiting the house. Many people whose female cats previously never exhibited any interest in going outdoors find their females bolt for the door at this time. A distressingly high percentage of those cats manage to make it outdoors, only to return a day or two or three later... and have kittens about two months after that.

It's time for her to have a day at "the spa," a lovely TDK euphemism for a visit to the vet's office for spay or neuter surgery. Afterward, she will undoubtedly revert to her previously quiet self, just as glad to loll about in the sunshine as usual.

  11. Yes, HM, Bobby WAS a terror - or as much of a terror as Bobby could be! Climbing curtains - actually managed to rip the curtain rod right out of the wall! Jumping on counters that he knows he's not allowed to be on. Sneak-attacking Mama and biting her! BAD Bobby!
But he got over it! I have a sneaky suspicion Milo will be worse!!!!!

  12. more signs of being in heat -

    a wet tail

if you pat her on the back, her butt goes way up and the tail moves to the side

she is happy, but is to the point of being obnoxious

a kitty i got a shelter, Velvet, went into heat the day after I brought her home

Posted 1 year ago by Cheri 12/22 #

  13. You got the obnoxious part right!

I called the vet a while back, but they're booked. I'm gonna get to keep living with this wonderful part of being a mommy for a few more weeks.

  14. HH, it's only for a little while. Just make sure she doesn't shoot out the door or window when no one is watching.... otherwise, you could have bigger problems than just a "singing" kitty ;-)

  15. Hi Heather...It takes only a split second of hesitation for a kitty in heat to get free...I guarantee she'll return pregnant. Please..don't let her out to this unnecessary fate. Our kitty population in the world is sooooooo sadly out of control. If you truly love her...get her into the vet to prevent another litter of kitties in the world where there's so many now who need to find homes and so many being euthanized everyday. Let us know how kitty is doing...Oh..sorry...and Welcome to TDK. This kitty site Rocks!

  16. there are barbs on the the male kitty's penis. those barbs will induce ovulation in a female kitty. there's a better than 90 percent chance she'll get pregnant if the two of them have sex...

and now we return to our regular "g-rated" talk...

  17. That's why you hear her scream out when it happens--hoe they have mamaged to procreate with pain is beyond me!

Posted 1 year ago by Sheba's Mom in Phoenix, AZ 10/8 #

  18. wow, glad humans don't have to worry about barbs...

She's pretty terrified of the front door (I shut it loud on purpose her first few weeks at the house) and runs to the back of the apartment when it opens, so I think we'll be ok. I'll keep being careful, though. Thanks.

Vet is scheduled for a week & a half.

  19. Good luck keeping your kitty inside. Good job getting the "spa" trip scheduled! What is your kitten's name?

  20. Ginger went to the spa this morning and was QUITE unhappy about it! She went back into heat yesterday and when you combine that with the "no food before the surgery" factor, she was completely pathetic.

Older cat, Lexi, is enjoying a day to herself.

    Posted 1 year ago by heather_hyde #

  21. poor Ginger :) She will need lots of extra love when she gets home.

Posted 1 year ago by cricketsmama #

  22. Heather, Ginger will be feeling much better in a couple of days. She may not feel great for a day or two, but that's common with major surgery. The worst of it is usually just needing to sleep off the worst of the anesthesia.

She may smell funny to Lexi when she gets back, so don't be surprised if Lexi's not happy to see her. She'll smell like... well, like a visit to the vet's office.

Lots of quiet, and gentle attention will help Ginger recover quickly at home. Good luck!

  23. Remember the joke about the lady who called her vet to the house because "something was wrong" with her female cat? The vet checked the cat out and, sure enough, she was pregnant. The lady said "that's impossible-she never goes out and she's never been with other cats". Just then, a big tom cat saunters across the room. The vet said "then what's THAT?" The lady said, "don't be silly, that's her brother!!!"

Just thought I'd add a little silliness!!!!

  24. MMM..that's cute...glad we all know better...HH so glad you finally got Ginger into the vet..now you can get some much needed rest...

    Posted 1 year ago by 2bpurring #

  25. heather, glad that you got Ginger to the vet for her spa day....

Posted 1 year ago by AZDEBRA 5/27 & crew #

  26. thanks!! I'm so excited about the prospect of sleeping through the night again!! It's been WEEKS.

Lexi will, I'm sure, be very ornery when baby gets home. Probably best, though. That way gingy has time to rest and relax without being bothered or played with.

So, in line with MMM's joke, when I got to the vet this morning, they asked if there was any way Ginger could be pregnant. I said no, and when they asked if I was sure, I mentioned that the only other cat in the house was a girl and if she WAS pregnant, we'd be having a pretty serious discussion with the leading biologists in the country very quickly! :)

  27. Good one, HH!

  28. LOL, Heather! Poor Gingy. Please take extra special care of your little kitty. Maybe some extra good treats. Welcome to TDK by the way.

  29. About kitties in heat and their brothers: my first female, Tiger Lily, went into heat at about 5 or 6 months of age (at the time I didn't know it was possible at that age). For some reason I couldn't get her spayed while she was in heat; either vets didn't spay cats in heat back then (circa 1980) or they charged extra for it and I couldn't afford the extra cost. Anyway, during her confinement to the house, she propositioned her neutered brother Chappel. Anyone who thinks that cats don't have facial expressions should have seen this! Tig came sliding up to him, half on her back and half on her side, making a chirping-trilling sound. Chappel stared at her with a look on his face that shouted, "What is the matter with you? Are you out of your mind?" He jumped backward a step, never taking his eyes off of her. Tig kept up her attempt at seduction until Chappel ran under the bed and hid.
