  1. Well, I really don't have much to add to what already has been said.
I have been in the TDK family for a loooong time. I remember posting on the Daily Kitten. Chasing behind Huddy's Mamma and her pitchfork and kidnapping the kittens (boy was that a laugh!). I have drooled over all the goodies people brought and I have spent many a night painting Whack-bonk sticks.
    This is a fun place!
A cat friendly place where I got advice on Melon's dandruff and Pipa's spreading poop on the floor hability...
A place where I told friends I had met someone special, then got engaged... and now choosing a dress...
I have met very very good friends here, some for life I hope... that have given me advise, sent me goodies, made my Christmas and supported my bad days.

    I love it here.

Can I also say... My Owlwatcher what nice shoes you are wearing! *hint* *hint*

    Hugs to all! ALL

  8. I've been coming here for about a year now, and like the talks we have about kitties and all sorts of stuff. I'm glad to hear PM is getting married and sharing her bridal gown ideas with us.

Let me share a wild one with all of you! I belong to the Society for Creative Anachronism, Inc., we study the middle ages by doing stuff that they would have done back then. You pick who you want to be, when you want to be, where you're from, and there you go.

Right now I am working on some 10th century Danish (Viking) outfits for myself. I have five underdresses cut out, all of cotton, and I'm working on five apron-dresses out of silk noil, to go over them.

I love learning history this way...learning what They Did back then, and trying to re-create it now. In the 10th century, the clothes I'm making would have been made out of wool, linen, and silk. I can't wear linen next to my skin, so I swapped out for cotton instead. Silk noil is lighter than wool for summer wear, so this is a logical extrapolation too.

I will be doing some embroidery to decorate these dresses too, so it's learning to sew without a pattern but just by measurements, converting measurements given for 56" wide to using 44" wide fabric, buying enough to handle shrinkage after I wash it before cutting out, and sewing it all together.

I've been involved in this organization for thirty-three years. I met my husband in the SCA. :-)

  9. Siobhan, my hubby and I are interested in medieval history as well. We go to the faires and such when we can. We looked into joining the SCA and hubby even fought with the local SCA, made his shield and what not. It was fun, but we didn't mesh with the group. We both bought outfits at one of the faires but never wore them. Sad huh.
How awesome that you are making the outfit. I for one am impressed! I can barely sew on a button :)
I would love to hear about your adventures in the SCA :)

  16. Hello everyone, I'm really sadened by all this. I don't know the whole story, but I guess is that many were hurt by comments made by others. Just a moment of silence from me, to those who feel they must move on...God bless you all.

  18. Hi Everyone!

PM - Very well said! I would like to echo your thoughts. I was a lurker until I finally decided to join in on all the kitnapping antics! I have also made some really good friends through this site - and I'm really looking forward to following all your wedding plans here! :-D

  20. Siobhan,

SCA fun group. Been there, done that, T-shirts are period.

I even attended a Crown Tourney where the Hearlds went through with a public health announcement to report flu symptoms to a Dr. immediately if you became ill on returning home and to explain where you had been.

There were a couple of cases of Bubonic Plague in the area!

  21. Pipa,

I should have completed reading the topic before commenting on SCA. But I wanted to complete the thought before job interrupted (always a distraction ... work gets in the way of so many things).

I have been wondering about the wedding plans and, of course, the dress quest.

  22. Siobhan, pleased to meet you! (Also in the SCA, but only about 16 or 17 years, and in Calontir, not the Middle.) Like you, I've found I enjoy history most when I can feel more involved.

Cricketsmama, I'm sorry your local group wasn't a good fit. I wish I could help introduce you to some of my friends, but I'm afraid I don't know anyone in Cleveland.

  23. Ailuromaniac please! Feel free to write anything and everything you want, it was what this thread was for.
Personally I find fascinating that you survived the Bubonic Plague!
    ;-)

Posted 3 years ago by PipasMumSpain #

  24. Ailuromaniac, normally the SCA tries to recreate the better part of the Middle Ages... not the less-fun stuff like bubonic plague! Seriously, was that the actual illness in the area?

    Posted 3 years ago by anncetera2 #

  25. Here you go Anncetera, I googled it!

It probably began in Central Asia and spread to Europe by the late 1340s. The total number of deaths worldwide from the pandemic is estimated at 75 million people; there were an estimated 25-50 million deaths in Europe. The Black Death is estimated to have killed 30% to 60% of Europe's population. It may have reduced the world's population from an estimated 450 million to between 350 and 375 million in 1400.

Bubonic plague is thought to have returned to Europe every generation with varying virulence and mortalities until the 1700s. During this period, more than 100 plague epidemics swept across Europe. On its return in 1603, the plague killed 38,000 Londoners. Other notable 17th century outbreaks were the Italian Plague of 1629-1631, the Great Plague of Seville (1647-1652), the Great Plague of London (1665–1666),the Great Plague of Vienna (1679). There is some controversy over the identity of the disease, but in its virulent form, after the Great Plague of Marseille in 1720–1722 and the 1771 plague in Moscow it seems to have disappeared from Europe in the 19th century

  26. Siobhan say hi to my viking ancestors!

Posted 3 years ago by GreatDane #

  27. Pipa's Mum, thanks for the information! I was just terribly curious because, other than a weird location or two in perhaps the past couple of decades, I wasn't aware of many modern outbreaks.

Now, I have gone camping in the SCA and seen fellow campers come down with Lyme disease, which is a disease that characteristically forms a bullseye on the skin around the area of the tick bite... and it's a serious enough disease that it warrants medical intervention. Left untreated for too long, and it can be fatal. (But it's a far cry from bubonic plague.)

  28. First PM...so very well said, I'm somewhat still a newbie, but have been through so much with all of you...Let's not let this family fall apart...
Siobhan...That is so cool!!! Ron would love this, he loves history and would love to do some hands on history...and he's always been partial to vikings and pirates...LOL

  29. If you're into it, you can check out the SCA's main page at www.sca.org and it can link you to the kingdom nearest you.

I've met some great people in the SCA, some of them I only see once or twice a year, but your friendships pick up right where they left off from a year ago (lol).

I find a lot of the same community spirit here :-)

Posted 3 years ago by Siobhan #

  30. Yes, Plague was found in the early 90's in this area of TX. I can't recall the exact date. The event was at a campground in Tie (near Abilene). A transient had been taken to the emergency room where he was admitted and later died. Several other cases were located in the group of workers and families he was in close contact with (they lived or worked in the same place).

The announcements were precautionary due to this somewhat isolated outbreak. So there was no epidemic in the Middle Ages in Ansteorria, but if someone had come into contact with infected fleas it could have been serious. There were people from other kingdoms attending the event.

It was just so period... Court had to announce that the Hearld's warnings were indeed serious and it was not an SCA "thing" going on.
