taco needs prayers again :(

(48 posts)
  1. All of a sudden, three days ago Taco started vomiting whenever we administered his medicine. He would be fine during all his other feedings, but when he gets his meds he just throws it straight back up. The vet thought maybe it was just a bit hard on his tummy so she prescribed him something else too to aid in digesting it. It did not work. Taco is still throwing up.

Not only is he throwing up his medicine, but now that he's doing that he isn't absorbing it long enough so his diarrhea is coming back since he isn't getting the proper enzymes.

He is starting to lose weight again.

Isn't it sad how the one medicine that can cure him just makes him sicker?

Please please pray that we can find an alternate way to treat Taco and he will start to gain weight and keep nutrients in again.

We might have to take him back to the hospital if he keeps getting sick like this.

  3. I'm so sorry that your little Taco is having such a hard time of it. It's so hard when you're doing everything the vet tells you to do and suddenly they start back in. Hon...I recommend you call your vet back. Prayers to little Taco to get well. He's soooo cute.

  6. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the vet will be able to find another drug that helps little Taco. Is the drug he's taking something you can give via injection?

There's lots of meds out there, so let's hope that the vet can find one that works soon.

  12. Poor Taco, how about something that can be applied transdermal (isn't that where you put it on the inside of the ear via cream).

  13. Great idea, Deb! That may do the trick since Taco seems so sensitive to meds taken by mouth. I hope this little guy's problem is resolved quickly! Sending you the TDK healing white light.

  14. OMG, Taco, little one, you need to stay strong! Your mom, Ginirosaru, loves you and will do whatever it takes to help you get through this setback! I am sending prayers and healing white light to both of you! Please stay strong, this is just a setback, it can be overcome! Please let us know if you need help, Ginirosaru!

  15. Ginirosaru, I hope your vet can help poor little Taco with his condition! Some medications can be compounded in different ways, to be absorbed through the skin or as a suppository. Depending upon the medication and how it's metabolized, these can be better alternatives than oral ingestion.

    Good luck!!

  16. Poor little Taco. I hope your vet can find the right meds. I agree with the previous post about the transdermal gel, that stuff has been a life saver for me in the past.

  17. I'll ask my vet about it tomorrow, but I'm not sure if this is the kind of medication that can be taken that way. It's taken right with his food and/or mixed into his food because it helps with digestion and gives him enzymes. I'm not sure if putting it in in other ways will make it work fast enough or work in his digestive tract since hes not ingesting it. Does anyone know? I'll definitely ask the vet tomorrow though. Thanks!

  19. ginirosaru, you are right - ask the vet. I've used it for antibiotics and for hyperthyroid medication. I don't know if Taco's meds would work in this formula.

  22. I have been spending a little time researching exocrine pancreatic insufficiency in felines and what I have found indicates that the meds are essentially ground-up hog or beef pancreas. I have not found anything to say that the actual enzymes have either been synthesized or isolated so shots or transdermal may not be available.

Ask your Vet if you could feed fresh pancreas (sweetbreads) to Taco and maybe sweetbreads from lamb or mutton could be found as a substitute or supplement.

Also there is reference to two concurrent problems often found with this rare disorder. Common Biliary Duct obstruction with attendant liver problems and since the pancreas itself is inflamed...diabetes.

Pernicious Anemia could also be present so B12 shots may also be necessary.

Poor little-one. I will keep him in my prayers.

  23. You are in my thoughts and I'm sending positive and healing energies. I went through this very same thing several years ago with my dog. She, too, had ground up pig pancreas mixed in her food to help her. I understand your emotions.
