Final countdown

(5 posts)
  1. On my office calendar I noted, space-launch style, the number of weeks until my pastor's last service at the church. I started at T minus 7 weeks, with May 25 as lift off. Today begins that final countdown backwards from 10, by days. Not long ago, I started to be able to count the weeks remaining of his pastorate on one hand. Soon I'll be able to count the days that way.

I'm to help serve communion this Sunday, helping him one last time. I just talked to him on the phone to get some details about that service and to ask him if it would be all right for my husband to take him and his wife (and me, of course, but my husband is the host) out to dinner after Pastor's last day at the church, after Mr. Leeny's mouth has healed from his tooth extraction. Pastor said that would be fine; they'd be looking forward to it. I'll have to call him by his first name then. That seems so odd.

  2. I'm sorry you're losing such a good friend and source of support,I still miss one of my pastors. He was a great freind and he changed my life.
Will you still be able to communicate with him Leeny? Maybe by phone or Email,it would be better than losing contact with him completely.

  3. I'm not sure, Buttercup. When I went to talk to him a couple of weeks ago, we both acknowledged that the pastor-parishoner relationship was ending, but neither one of us was sure about the form that the friendship would take. I told him that it would be easier if he were moving away; then I'd know that the relationship would take the form of cards in the mail, the occasional phone call when something important happens, that sort of thing. Neither one of us knew what it would be like with him living 15 minutes down the road, but with no pastoral bond any more.

  4. He will not be your Pastor that is true..but a bond is a bond...I have a feeling that after May 25 you will have gained a new friend, without having to start from the beginning...

  5. Five.

On Sunday morning there will be one service instead of the usual two, followed by a "Service of Closure," whatever that is.

Also found out that the interim can't come until July 15. Until then, we'll have the pulpit filled by "supply preachers." Going to have to ask the lay president of the congregation what the qualifications for a supply preacher are.

(My last experience with that was in the independent congregation [no longer exists] that I left to come where I am now. They went through 3 pastors in 9 years, with months-long stretches in between during which they let ANYBODY into that pulpit. One was some guy who worked for a soap company, who said that people don't have to get sick. Said that, just because the devil tempts you to get sick, you don't have to do it, just like you don't have to sin when the devil tempts you to do so. Got up and walked out on that one. [Rude, I know, but he didn't know what I was doing. It was already 12:20 and he was still preaching; probably thought I had to be somewhere at 12:30. When I got to my car, saw through the windows that the congregation was standing for the closing hymn.] Others contradicted each other. I suppose a denomination will have more stringent standards than that.)

Making an embroidered piece as a final gift; the verse about "for everything there is a season..." with a simple border around it. Done in brown and forest green. Not that the color will matter to Pastor because he's color blind, but I want it to look nice. Should be able to finish it tonight.
