Rocky (Who was sick last week) is better. The anibiotics are working well and he is back to his old self again! Does any body know when to stop giving him his anibiotics? I have been very cautious about stopping and not giving him anymore of the medicine. I don't want to risk him getting sick again. The painters are done and the walls are dry, that probably means he is safe from getting in the paint....hopefully?

I wouldn't stop giving him his medicine just yet. Sometimes it is best to continue giving Rocky his meds until it is all gone or for at least two weeks, depends on what was wrong with him. You can always ask your vet for his/her opinion. I think I'd call and ask, just to be on the safe side.

I wouldn't want Rocky to have a relapse of any kind and get sick again.

I was actually thinking about not stopping, but then a question poped up in my mind: 'What if he is all better and he is going to get sick again, just because he keeps on taking the medicine when there is no need.' I'll keep on giving him the medicine now that I have another's opinion, Thanks!

Always complete a course of antibiotics. You want to be sure to kill all the bacteria. Leaving bacteria behind that were merely weakened by the medicine is what causes resistant strains to flourish. The only reason to stop an anitbiotic is that it is either in effective or there is an alergic reaction to it. Then a substitution is needed and that antibiotic needs to be taken in a full course.

It should say on the medicine if you need to finish it--if in doubt call the vet, but in my experience you should finish it.

always give the full course of antibiotics, wether for you or your babies. You do not want to leave the more resistant bacteria behind and having him get sick with the ones that are harder to kill.

Glad Rocky is feeling better...too often I've seen animals who stop their antibiotic too soon and before long the infection builds right back up again..maybe even with a little more resistance to the effects of the medicine.
BTW...I just peeked at Rocky on Catster...What a handsome cuss he is!!! -
Hi Catfancier, glad Rocky's on the mend. Humans and animals should always finish a course of antibiotics, but then you'll know that by now! Give him a head scratch from me (and one to Macey, don't want any favouritism!)
