  1. Hi All~

Yesterday when 120 was sitting in front of me at the computer and blocking the screen (his normal morning spot) I was giving him some scritches and found an engorged tick on his neck. I lit and then blew out a match, held the hot end to the tick and then easily pulled him out, including his head and a piece of poor 120's skin. After that, I examined 120 more closely and found fleas on his neck and head! There weren't too many, so I gave him a bath. Then I checked Wolfie, who is indoor only, and he also has them! To his horror, into the bath for him too! I stopped at Pet Supermarket on the way home and bought flea shampoo, flea collars and a product called Bio Spot. It was $14.49 for three treatments applied to the back of the neck. I thought that maybe it would work like Revolution, which cost me over $75 a month when I used it with 7 cats. Well...used the Bio Spot and saw no difference except the cats all seem nervous and jumpy, the fleas that were directly in the treated area are dead but there are live ones inches away on the face; the place where I applied the product is a big greasy oil slick (the Revolution used to soak into the skin immediately) and the flea collars also seem to be doing nothing. So, I seem to have just blown about $60 when I will have to get the Revolution anyway. The collars are Scratchex brand and are supposed to kill fleas and ticks for 5 months. They were $4.49 each.

  2. Ok...maybe it will let me post here, though I was not able to start a new thread? The problem is that the page to add a topic kept timing out; I tried thru AOL, Internet Explorer AND Firefox. Same result each time.
    :-(

  6. CW, be careful with flea collars. I had one on my meezer (RIP), and he had an allergic reaction to the thing. The vet had to shave his neck, and I had to medicate his skin for about 10 days. And the poor guy looked very silly for quite a while 'til his fur grew back. Vet said he could never wear a flea collar again, and that it was not uncommon for cats to have some kind of allergic reaction to flea collars.

  7. Poor 120...I have to check Naughtyboy everytime he comes home for fear he will start picking up ticks from the levee he keeps hanging out on. I've been lucky so far...knock on wood. As for flea remedies. I really can't suggest anything because I can't afford to buy any of the stuff needed. I always use the cheap Hartz flea treatment & I don't put the whole dose on any of the animals, & again, I've been lucky & it's worked fine for me...Another knock on wood. Sorry I can't help.

  8. CW, I feel your pain about the fleas. the shampoos will work, but flea collars are generally a waste of money. Advantage has a new product called advantage multi that my moms vet in austin recomended. He says it works well on both fleas and ticks. I hope that helps, plus I dont know if it is more or less than revolution.

  11. Hi CW,I've never had any luck with flea collars and that Biospot doesn't work(like you've already figured out) The only thing I use when it gets really bad is advantage. You can buy it in the Foster and Smith catalog for a much better price than most pplaces.

  12. I use Advantage on Shadz for fleas, she hates it when it first hits the skin but it works well. We don't get ticks here, thankfully. Hope you can solve this problem, 120 please watch where you are playing.

  13. With indoor/outdoor cats you are always going to play catch-up with the fleas and ticks. To reduce the chemical load on your babies and increase the safety zone of the home you need to treat the ground (and indoor carpets) Here is a source of Diatomaceous Earth in volume lots.

It is in-expensive and organic. It will also help reduce other insect pest problems.

  14. NEVER use a flea collar with a topical treatment! You can have a bad reaction. I used to use Frontline Plus until Revolution came down in price--$58.47 for 6 vials at http://www.canadavet.com/Revolution.cfm.

  15. I stopped using flea collars yrs. ago when our Binky's came up missing one day.(before he became permanently indoors). We thought he lost it from a fight with another cat. Well.the next morning while watching the birds in our apple tree out back I saw something hanging on a branch. I climbed up it,& lo & behold,it was his collar hanging off the branch. It's a good thing I did the 2-finger check when putting it on. Had I put it on tighter,He might possible have hung himself. I haven't used them since. They are rather ineffective.

  16. CW, Revolution works great, but when you go to any of the sites, you have to search it by name. It doesn't come up automatically under flea medications. (I don't know why).
It will also take care of ear mites....
It is expensive, but it is worth it!!!

  17. I swear by Revolution also - works for The Bobster!
I stopped by the vet's the other day and asked them if I should give the stuff to Milo, too, in case Bobby brings something inside from his adventures. They told me absolutely - guess I'll have to order more.

  18. Catwoman,
I had a neighbor that gave his poor female a flea bath, then put the flea collar on her and she almost died! Please be careful with your precious babies.... A customer told me one of her cats died from a flea collar and she immediately removed the other 3 on her other cats. She was so upset to lose her baby.
