It really is fun to hear some beloved references to the kits...and I love that Elizabeth has a secret name that falls only upon the ears of Cato..cool move..and I'm laughing out loud kittymom at your reference to the 'ugly look'. My dog Abby gave me a name for it I always call 'The Mother-In-Law Look'. We use it now for all of our pets whenever they give us that look. It really needs no explanation. LOL!

The Naming of Cats is a difficult matter,
It isn't just one of your holiday games;
You may think at first I'm as mad as a hatter
When I tell you, a cat must have THREE DIFFERENT NAMES.
First of all, there's the name that the family use daily,
Such as Peter, Augustus, Alonzo or James,
Such as Victor or Jonathan, or George or Bill Bailey -
All of them sensible everyday names.
There are fancier names if you think they sound sweeter,
Some for the gentlemen, some for the dames:
Such as Plato, Admetus, Electra, Demeter -
But all of them sensible everyday names.
But I tell you, a cat needs a name that's particular,
A name that's peculiar, and more dignified,
Else how can he keep up his tail perpendicular,
Or spread out his whiskers, or cherish his pride?
Of names of this kind, I can give you a quorum,
Such as Munkustrap, Quaxo, or Coricopat,
Such as Bombalurina, or else Jellylorum -
Names that never belong to more than one cat.
But above and beyond there's still one name left over,
And that is the name that you never will guess;
The name that no human research can discover -
But THE CAT HIMSELF KNOWS, and will never confess.
When you notice a cat in profound meditation,
The reason, I tell you, is always the same:
His mind is engaged in a rapt contemplation
Of the thought, of the thought, of the thought of his name:
His ineffable effable
Effanineffable
Deep and inscrutable singular Name.from Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats by T.S.Eliot

Our kits have always had middle names,
Redford Lorenzo & Mitzi Mayhem!
(I've missed you all! Been very sick with a crummy virus that got so bad I spent a few days in the hospital--and NO COMPUTER! Drove me crazy!
At least I got to watch Animal Planet all day! Our landlord won't allow satillite or cable in any of the apartments, so we only get regular stations-and only 3 of the 8 come in on the anntena besides...boo!) Anyway, happy to be back with the TDK GangStars!Posted 3 years ago by rainingwolf #

Tikka does not have a middle name either, but many nicknames! LOL - like Bobby and Milo, she is often "Tikka....Noooooo!" However, she is also often "Oh, Tikka!", when she brings in one of her little wildlife gifts! We often call her Tikki (there's that 'ee' sound!), or Tikki-Tonk. But when I call her, it has to be "Tikka" - definitely pronouncing that "a". That is the only version of her name she responds to - when she chooses to respond, that is! We get the 'Mother-in-Law Look' too - also the purposeful looking off in the other direction; you can just hear her saying "la la la, I can't heeeaaar you!"

I love this thread too! My older cat Cinnamon has many nicknames: Cinnie, Minnie, Cinaminamon (its the way my brother pronounced the spice until he
was about 5 years old) and other assorted additions of girl and baby. Aggie
though, wound up with Aggie Mae Bunnyfur Tigernose and the occasional nickname Chirpygirl. TessaPosted 3 years ago by AgnMinsMom #

Now, about nicknames: Chappel was sometimes Chappel Cat and, to my brother, Kitten Caboodle; Quimby was Quimber, Quimbertoes, Q-bert, and Kitty Kumquat; Tiger Lily was Tig (my brother sometimes called her Tigress, but it didn't fit her at all); and Katie was Katydid and Sweet Baby Kate (which is included on her grave marker). My best friend's kitty Freckles had lots of nicknames: Freck, Frecky, F.R., Freckery, Freckelina (I wrote a song for her to the tune of Mona Lisa using that nickname), and Skinny Tail. Buttercup is simply Cup of Butter, and Penny is Pense or Pensy.

Well, I had to post this here because Nora just got the "Nora Jean" treatment big time. She loves to go out on the deck but I will only let them out there when I am home (it is a 2nd floor deck, pretty high). I'm making dinner and I look out and there is Nora (who is declawed BTW) up on the railing - a big NO NO. So I said "Nora Jean!" and right away she turned around and went RUNNING along the railing (with me trying not to yell at her) to get back to the table so she could get back down. Then she ran inside, like she knew that would be her punishment anyway. It was so obvious that she knew she was in trouble! I guess using the middle name really does work.

Oh I almost forget the legacy of an old boyfriend who was a cat person,
all cats are biddles ( dogs were doodles) so sometimes its Biddle kitty
for Aggie and Big Biddles for Minnie girl.Posted 3 years ago by AgnMinsMom #

Oh, it's not me, Elizabeth... but thanks to T.S. Eliot, who surely understood cats better than most. When you see the play "Cats" this part about The Naming of Cats will surely bring a chill... and a smile...

AgnMinsMom: I once had a brown tabby named Aggie, she past away about two years ago from a Bob Cat attack. We some times called her "Aggitha"

CF, thanks for this thread, it is quite interesting. My cats don't have middle names but they are called by nicknames. Like Sammy, and when naughty,
Sam-YOU-ELLL OFFFFFFF!!! Hence the same for Oliver, OLLL-iver, OFFFFFFFF.
Doesn't work tho. Get the "huh, u talka to me??????" stare. Other times their names are Down! and Down!Posted 3 years ago by HootiesMama #

Sultan doesn't have a middle name as such but he has loads of nicknames. Most of the time he is Sultie, but he gets Kittymog, Pusscat, kitten-catten, Sultimog and babycakes a lot from me too. I don't know where most of them came from, just generally chatting to him over 18 or so years I think. He responds to them all to the same degree really, which means only when he feels like it for any of them :).

Pipa and Melon have nick names too:
Melon is sometimes pronounces in a sweet voice "ME-LAWN"....
Pipa ignores her name and probably thinks it's "NĂ“!"Posted 3 years ago by PipasMumSpain #

If we're doing nick names, then...for some odd reason Brain has the most. Brainy, brainy mcbrainy, mitten, mitten kitten, mouton, squirrtel (a pokeman, if anyone remembers those!) and her "official name" is Magellan...the others just have an extra word at the end of their names...

I do middle names--they just seem to happen. I have Sophie Snoopers aka Monkey face, Tessie Mae aka MISS CAT, Molly Kate aka baby cat although Sophie does not snoop as much as she used too and Molly is 8 and a hefty 11 pounds but the names stick
