No one on the phone

  1. My cousin who has been having stomach problems called this afternoon. She's going to the ER because (1) the pain has been getting worse, (2) she's been getting weaker, and (3) she can't wait for her appointment with the physician on the 12th. For the first time in memory, there was no one to call to ask that she be included in the prayers of the church. The interim pastor/transition pastor/transition leader, or whatever he is, doesn't arrive until July 13. Until then, whoever they can get will be filling the pulpit on Sunday mornings.

    Although this Saturday is officially his last day, Pastor's last service was last Sunday. There was a ceremony at the end where he handed to representatives of the congregation the tools of the pastorate: the lectionary, the shell used in baptism, the pastors' edition of the book of worship, the chalices of wine, and the plate of hosts. Now it's like a football team that's winning, that has the ball, and is just letting the clock run out.

  5. Yes, Leeny, I send healing prayers and white light to your cousin. I hope the staff in the ER will be able to quickly diagnose her problem and commence the appropriate treatment. Please keep us posted. {{{{hugs}}}}}

  6. Add my prayers for your cousin as well. I'm not sure what denomination you are - are there elders on your church board who might visit her in the hospital? I go to a very large church so we have a separate ministry for that. The church I used to go to had visitation elders, I think.

  7. Leeny, what is your cousin's first name? My church has a 24.7.365 prayer circle. I'm not in--they are far more disciplined than I.

    But I can make sure she's held in prayer continuously until she finds out what's going on...and as long as needed after.

  8. Lisa, my cousin's name is Dale. Thank you.

    NNM, my cousin lives in Pennsylvania, not near me. My church has set up a Member Care Committee, or something like that, to deal with congregational needs that don't require an ordained person to handle the situation.

    As an update, my cousin didn't go to the ER yesterday. Instead, she's going to a teaching hospital today to be evaluated.

  9. Well, my cousin just called, and she didn't go to the hospital today, either. Seems her stomach pain has remitted for now. We'll see what happens.

  10. Leeny, is this specifically stomach pain or abdominal pain that's intermittent and sometimes moving around? In other words....could your cousin have a traveling kidney stone?
