  1. As of 1:00pm CDT on Friday, May 30, 2008, I drove off the campus of the HS after our EOY luncheon and became A FREE WOMAN!!! That hellhole of I job I held for the last 12 weeks is FINALLY OVER!!!! I never have to sit in a room with two violent, ill-medicated kids ever again wondering if this will be the day one of them puts me either in the hospital or in jail!

This much I know, that I am through with teaching. There is something insanely wrong when the rights of a violent, mentally-unstable kid to Free Access to Public Education supersedes the rights to a Safe Learning Environment of stable children who actually come to school to learn (not to mention the rights of adult employees to a workplace with a reasonable expectation of safety). Ongoing legal action prevents me from saying anything more.

I get paid by the district through August, so I have time to figure out what to do next. I am interested in Technical Writing. Right now, the prospect of being in a cube farm staring at Microsoft Word, surrounded by other adults doing the same task sounds VERY appealing to me. I speak IT, and know how to find answers (or, at least, I can find others who know how to find answers) thanks to my 22 years of marriage to a geek, but I have no formal training in IT. I can edit like nobody's business, but again, it has all been done to help others, not in an official capacity. In short, I can do the job, but I can't prove it.

Just to complicate matters more, I can't get the TX Workforce Commission to return my calls. I could really use some help in resume' building, but can't get anyone to talk to me. Very frustrating.

Any ideas? I'm open to suggestions....

  2. Boy, can I relate to you. I got into editing thru the back door (hubby). He worked at Xerox at the time and he would bring stuff home for me to proof just for him and he was really impressed and mentioned me to his co-workers. Upshot was I got hired thru a contract house as a proof-reader, no formal training but logic and a flair for the word. I got paid much more than being a travel agent and could work from home as that is where my office was but I spent a lot of time at their place too. It was one of the more rewarding jobs I have had. Good luck gatkity. If you need help with resume I could email you mine and you could see how to build your own. Bob helped me with mine.

  3. Wow..big changes in your life..good for you!! I wish I could help but I've been at the same desk for about 13 years..don't know what it's like out there anymore..

  4. First things first... Congratulations for getting away from that war zone... you are a very smart woman and you deserve to be treated with respect.

You don't know how I have read your mail with frustration! I am a genius making resumés... I have done them for family and friends, saying the truth but making you look like God's gift to the company that is lucky enough to hire you... but I don't know how to do that in English.
My advise is never ever lie but "decorate" the truth.

Lots of luck and I'm sure you will sleep well tonight.

  10. Yikes! Is that how you see the world? You made the right decision with teaching. You've got to trust me, you'll find your place. You are smart and educated, you just need to decide what you are after now.

  11. In other words, what I want to be when I grow up? (lol)

Rememmber, miu, growing old is mandatory; growing up is optional!

  12. Congrats Gatakitty for making it through that horrible situation and still managing to maintain your sanity. I hope things get much better for you. There are lots of examples of resumes online but a good idea is to go to several employment agencies, sign up with them and get some good advice on resume writing. They also have computers for you to update your knowledge on various computer applications. Keep us posted mi hermana.

  13. Wow,no wonder we haven't heard from you. I'm so glad you're out of that situation. I'm having a similar career rethink about Nursing because the rights of anyone in the hospital supersede the personnel working there. Any patient can assault us without worry of legal retribution because they're "sick".You're right it's pretty messed up right now.
Way to go GK,I'm glad you're out.

  16. Basically, it's a position for the same state agency where Hubby works, although in a different division (same office complex, though, which means we could carpool the mile or so there and let Ladybug drive the RaggTopp to school).

I would be a liasion to different targeted groups for a pollution-reduction program. I would be coming up with educational/instructional material to ensure compliance with pertinent environmental regulations. Some, I would present in person, some would go in publications.

It's a lot like teaching--coming up with lessons, selecting the best way to present, assessing effectiveness, etc. The difference is that I wouldn't be dealing with kids, but adults, and this time, the law would be on MY side! The pay raise would be slight, but it WOULD be a raise.

  17. Ginny, there is a great book called Resumes That Knock 'Em Dead. It is a great resource for building a great resume. I have used it for years to help people with their resumes. If you need another eye to look yours over, feel free to email me at ppearson 23 at yahoo dot com.
