Japanese seem to really like Scottish Folds.

  3. OH MY GOD, did you hear that teensy "wew" and the big purring at the very end? OH MY GOD, what a darling baby. I am suffering cute overload.

  4. That is the cutest kitten! How adorable!

(The video shows exactly the method to use, if you want to turn your kitty into a cat that attacks your hands. As cute and adorable as the kitten is, those claws will eventually be serious business! IMO, a feather-on-a-stick toy or something similar is much more appropriate for this sort of thing, with cuddling involving hands only afterward.)

  6. I was thinking along those lines ann2... I don't ever tease my girls with my hands. I like my skin in place!

Oh.. and Mili has started to enjoy tummy rubs!

  8. OMG!! Now why did you have to post this???? Now I just have to have him. What does it cost to go the Japan and kittennap a sweet little baby like that??

  9. 2P, I'm so glad to hear that Mili's going for the tummy rubs! She trusts you very much, to allow that sort of behavior. Now, the true test of her tolerance is to see if you can get her dressed up in doll clothes... ;-)

  10. Ferrule loves the tummy rubs. And he has a very long belly to rub.

  11. The unnamed feral here, is turning into a real sweetheart! He actively seeks me out, lets me rub his belly, pull out burrs from his long coat, and he wants to sleep in my lap. (He's really pretty big for that.) I can hardly hear his purr, but I can always see the fur vibrating at his throat.

This is in sharp contrast with Cammie, who still darts away every single time I come out the front door. She'll rub up against my dangling hand, but anything resembling reaching for her, results in a very strong flight response.

  12. Anncetera2 - uh, think I'll pass on the doll clothes LOL Next adventure is trimming the claws again. I really have a hard time doing that. And Mili's are like little needles... she is a 'biscuit maker' and it hurts sometimes. I have tried the towel wrap, but apparently am going about it wrong. She darts away so quickly.... can't come at her from above with anything.. [getting a collar on her was a feat in it's own right!] and still no picking her up. She'll cuddle on my lap, and sleep snuggled into me.. but DON'T pick her up!

  13. 2P, when she's cuddled on your lap, start touching her front paws. Don't try to hold them, just touch them; top and bottom, if possible. Don't be nervous or scared; it's just an additional bit of cuddling. It's possible that you can work on this while she's making biscuits; she won't like being interrupted, but she might tolerate it better then.

After she gets a lot more comfortable with you handling her front paws, then lap cuddles and paw handling turn into cuddling and claw extensions. Gently handle her paw, and then gently squeeze to extend one claw. If she flinches, stop the extension. Go back to just handling paws. Repeat (ad nauseum).

When she responds well to handling paws and claw extensions, always let her know how pleased you are with her behavior! Don't try to restrain or force anything; you're working on establishing trust and positively reinforcing the behavior you want.

So... if you're able to get her better about having her paws handled, and having her claws extended, the next step is to re-introduce the clippers. Don't use them! Just have them in your lap, sitting on the arm of a chair, or in your hand. Let her sniff them, play with them, bite them... it's all cool. The only behavior you don't want to reinforce is avoidance.

Next step is to gently touch her paw or claw with the clipper. Don't clip at this point; just touch. Tap the end of a claw, if you can (extended or not extended, doesn't matter.) You just want to show her that she doesn't need to be afraid of the clippers, nor of the contact with her claws.

So... now paws handled, claws extended, clippers present and have tapped claws. By now, she's comfortable with all of these (or at least not panicking or fighting). At this point, you find the best position to clip her may be in an embrace. The following photo shows a good position; cat facing away from you. I'd recommend your non-dominant arm going around the cat, and the hand that will do the clipping remaining free. Practice the position a few times; then introduce paw handling, then claws extended, then clippers present, then tap claws.

(This sounds like a lot of hassle, and I will go so far as to say it's a slow process. But she's already a bit spooked about having her claws clipped, and all of this work is to help re-establish trust regarding this particular activity.)

Finally, you're good to go in terms of actually clipping a claw. Only a tiny bit comes off.

WOO HOO! Time for a kitty treat. Hey, if kitty treats help anywhere in this training, use them! Positive associations are being built, and treats can certainly be a part of that. Each time she lets you clip a claw without struggle, pet her, praise her, tell her what a good kitty she's being. A big happy ending!

(These kinds of steps are pretty similar to some forms of potty training, for children; lots of little steps, lots of praise for the desired behavior, no punishment at all is involved.)

  15. I will certainly begin work on this Ann.... slow, yes. Worth it in the long run? Absolutely.
Question - can damage be done (to her - I know to me!) by not clipping often enough?
Thank you for such detailed information... you are indeed a blessing.
Once I get my new camera software all loaded, I'll send you an updated picture of Mili. She is such a beauty! And such a talker !

  16. Nala's nail grew so long it embedded in her paw pad-the vet had to clip it. I don't know why it happened on just the one nail--she always uses her scratching post.

  17. This baby is sweet. The one of Memebon was even cuter, I have it saved. Maybe they like Folds because they always look like newborns?

  18. 2P, as I posted I worried that I wrote too much!

Damage to Mili by not clipping often enough? Unlikely, but as Sheba's Mom wrote, her cat had a nail that grew oddly, and had to be corrected.

The only damage I can think of would be damage like Bert, one of the outdoor ferals, appears to have suffered. On each of his two front paws, one of the middle toes have claws that don't appear to retract. I can only speculate that sometime, somewhere, he grabbed something that immediately jerked so hard that the most dug-in claw (that couldn't be pulled out in time) suffered some sort of tendon or ligament damage.

Cats that have untrimmed claws sometimes make a clicking sound when they walk on hard-surfaced floors. If there is loop carpeting, like Berber, sometimes untrimmed claws can snag on the closed loops. But I don't think she'd snag and jerk so hard as to cause herself any damage.

  19. What a sweet little Scottish Fold....I loved that he purrrred through the whole video! I agree though...that they're asking for trouble with the biting fingers....anytime I'm playing with mine if they suddenly decide to bite .... game over..til they settle down some.
