Literary revenge for cat cruelty

(10 posts)
  1. The remarks about humans' cruelty to cats posted for Shorty reminded me of an incident that happened to a young journalist in the early 1960s. Her husband gave her a Siamese kitten as a gift, but the kitten was ultimately murdered by a mentally unbalanced neighbor who pushed him out of a high-rise window. In her anger and grief, the journalist wrote a story called "The Sin of Madame Phloi," in which a cat-killer meets the same fate as a feline he lures to his death. Originally published in "Ellery Queen's Mystery Magazine," this story was reprinted twenty-something years later as part of a short story collection, "The Cat Who Had 14 Tales." The journalist was Lilian Jackson Braun, author of the long-running "The Cat Who..." mystery series, and this act of literary revenge was the beginning of her writings about cats that ultimately led to the famous series.

  6. I too read some of her "The Cat Who..." series and really enjoyed them. I suppose her revenge is about making lemonade when you are handed a lemon.

  7. I have looked at her books but never bought one. Guess I didn't want to get "hooked" into a long series. I may change my mind one of these days when I turn off the cable TV.

  9. I, for one, have read the entire KoKo and Yum Yum series. Started reading them in the days when I was lucky enough to have three Siamese babies. Those were the days when I moved into my current house with Snicklefritz, Oberon and Bleys (SOB). I miss them all. RIP
Lillian Jackson Braun is an easy read and they're kind of fun. KoKo reminds me a lot of my Bleys and my current Siamese, Neko Ninja! Another fun cat read is Rita Mae Brown's series written with her cat, Sneaky Pie Brown. I really adore Mrs. Murphy, Pewter and Tee Tucker (even though Tucker is a Corgi).
