Whoever did this better hope the police get to him first. If the Fire Dep't or ordinary Texans find him, may God have mercy on the arsonist, 'cause no one else will.

At least the mansion was emptied of both people and valuables for an extensive renovation.

  3. I read about this online this morning and kinda hope that this guy's found out by some of the good old boys myself. I wonder who's maddest at the Governor just now? Was this just some sick arson freak or a snubbed contractor maybe? I gotta stop trying to play armchair cop. I'm even suspecting those people out at that ranch and that's probably ridiculous. I'm really glad noone was hurt but what a shame. That place is 150 yrs. old.

  5. Lisa reporting directly from Austin. I promise you the whole city's in an uproar. You just can't pull that kind of stunt here and get away with it. Someone poisoned the Treaty Oak about 20 years ago--tree where the peace treaty with Mexico was signed--and you'd have thought someone had shot the president, that's how strong and mad the people roared. The Treaty Oak was saved and the Governor's mansion will be, too. One way or another. Remember the Alamo!!!!

  6. Being a born and raised Texan and living in Texas (not far from Austin...College Station)this makes me crazy! It does not matter whether you like/dislike the governor, where is the respect for our Texas Historic Heritage??? We will reconstruct, rebuild and renovate! We will find the arsonist and he/she will be punished. Someone saw something and it will be reported. It makes me so very sad. This has been a tough weekend here in Texas. We lost a wonderful man who was the safety officer on a Texas A&M sailing vessel. He got all of the students out but lost his own life when the boat capsized in the Gulf of Mexico. So..Roger we are thinking of you and your family here in Aggieland. Thanks for being a hero.

  7. I think the whole thing is suspicious. We'll see how this plays out, but personally, I think it was an inside job. I'm sorry, I just don't trust politicians, and we've even got a judge here (in Texas) who burnt his own house down. At least nobody was hurt or killed - a building can be replaced.

Karenopa, the list of people who are mad at the governor right now is such a long list you'd probably never get through it.

You should read the comments in the chronicle - they're having a field day.

  8. Update: investigators in Austin have the security tape, and a "person of interest" is clearly visible. They are not giving details right now, of course, but it looks like they just might catch the bugger (sorry, BritKits) after all!

  9. Well...that's great news gatakitty! Won't be long now and they'll be stringin' the culprit up to the nearest tree!!! He's/She's gonna rue the day they were born!

  10. Hot news!

The fire-charred Texas Governor’s Mansion is structurally stable and the first steps toward eventual restoration of the 152-year-old historic icon began late this morning, within minutes after arson investigators lifted their tight cordon on the crime scene.

First priorities: Shore up the thick masonry-and-brick walls, install a temporary roof and begin drying out the water-soaked interior.

Biggest surprise: Many historical details of the first floor are relatively undamaged, from the spiral stairway to parlor doors to original fireplace mantels, officials said an initial inspection showed. That’s because they had all been covered and protected as part of a $10 million restoration project that had been underway when an arsonist set the front porch ablaze early Sunday.
